General Description: Tripac 2000 Blue is a comprehensive coating system for the protection of steel bolts, studs, nuts, washers and other fasteners. This unique system includes step-by-step procedures necessary to insure that the coating meets the abrasion resistance, corrosion and chemical protection desired. This comprehensive coating system also significantly improves corrosion protection even when the surface (blue) coating is damaged in field applications. This system provides excellent lubrication therefore eliminating the need to use anti-seize.
Coating Procedures:
1. Surface Preparation: A. All Surfaces Chemically Cleaned B. Abrasive Blasting with Alum. Oxide (120 Grit) C. Zinc/Nickel Primer Process Applied D. Baked
2. Coating: A. Multiple Coats of Fluoropolymer Coating Applied (1 mil) 1014/1424 B. Air Dry For Minimum of 30 minutes C. Baked at 425 Degrees for 1 hour
3. Quality control checked for uniform application and thickness. Appearance shall be free
from any cracks, pinhole, runs, sags. Foreign matter, grit, rough particles or other surface imperfections.
Coating Properties: Tripac 2000 Blue differs from traditional Fluoropolymer coatings in one very important aspect – it is a composite material. Lubricants with the lowest known coefficient of friction are combined in a matrix with high temperature organic polymers. United, these polymers form “Plastic Alloys” Having unique and desirable properties:
1. Low friction; as low as 0.02 2. Wear resistance; even under extreme pressure 3. Corrosion and chemical resistance in most environments 4. Weather resistance against sunlight 5. Excellent lubrication to eliminate use of anti-seize
Other: 1000 Hours salt spray test (ASTM-B-117) Performed on bolts that have been torqued indicate that in some instances, some of the coating is removed from either the bolt head (by the wrench) or from the threads (by the nut). Even with this damage, the bolt shows minimum rusting and the nut is easily removed. Bolts protected by zinc plating and by hot dipped galvanizing show significant rusting and the nuts cannot be removed under the similar testing. Bolts used in this same testing are available for examination. Further information on physical and chemical properties is available upon request. Typical Specification: “Except where otherwise shown or specified, all bolts and cap screws, shall be carbon steel conforming to the requirements of ASTM A307 Grade A. The corresponding nuts shall conform to ASTM A563 Grade A. All bolts and nuts shall be coated with Tripac 2000 Blue Coating system, or district approved equal”

WHY XYLAN? For years fasteners have been protected from corrosion by coating them with cadmium or zinc. Today’s stringent environmental rules has eliminated cadmium and zinc coatings often produce uneven, unpredictable results. In the early 1970’s chemist developed matrix coatings based on fluoropolymers. One of the first was a product named “Xylan 1010”. WHAT IS XYLAN? Xylan is basically a blend of fluoropolymers, engineering plastics and selected corrosion inhibitors which, unlike conventional fluoropolymer coatings, is tailored to provide specific properties for specific applications. This give each individual Xylan coating the qualities the application most demands. Among these properties are: -Low friction (as low as 0.055) -Remarkable adhesion -Unusual resistance to wear and abrasion -Excellent resistance to corrosion -Resistance to chipping -Resistance to the elements -Wide working temperature range Xylan’s versatility is best demonstrated as a coating for bolts, studs and nuts where it provides unparalleled performance in ease of installation, resistance to corrosion and ease of removal. Standard production steel bolts, studs and bolts of all types can be coated. It can also be used with similar benefits on stainless steel to ease galling problems. TRIPAC 2000 BLUE COATING SYSTEM Tripac’s 2000 blue coating system includes as a primary coating Xylan 1014. This advanced fluoropolymer is ideal for fasteners. It reduces make-up torque by as much as 70% and can be tightened and removed numerous time with little or no damage to the coating. This coating is electrostatically applied to the fastener after all surfaces are chemically cleaned, abrasive blasted and primed with a nickel phosphate primer. Multiple coats are applied and the finished fastener is baked at 425o for one hour. Fasteners protected with this system show no signs of corrosion after salt spray testing up to 2000 hours. Nuts can be easily removed with a wrench instead of using a cutting tool or torch.

SUBMITTAL INFORMATION TRIPAC 2000 BLUE COATING SYSTEM
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
TRIPAC 2000 BLUE IS A COMPREHENSIVE COATING SYSTEM FOR THE PROTECTION OF STEEL BOLTS, STUDS, NUTS, WASHERS AND OTHER FASTENERS. THIS UNIQUE SYSTEM INCLUDES STEP BY STEP PROCEDURES NECESSARY TO INSURE THAT THE COATING MEETS THE ABRASION RESISTANCE, CORROSION AND CHEMICAL PROTECTION DESIRED. THIS COMPREHENSIVE COATING SYSTEM ALSO SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVES CORROSION PROTECTION EVEN WHEN THE SURFACE (BLUE) COATING IS DAMAGED IN FIELD APPLICATIONS. COATING PROCEDURES:
1. SURFACE PREPARATION: A. ALL SURFACES CHEMICALLY CLEANED B. ABRASIVE BLASTING WITH ALUM. OXIDE (120 GRIT) C. AEROCOTE (NICKEL) PRIMER PROCESS APPLIED D. BAKED
2. COATING A. MULTIPLE COATS OF FLUOROPOLYMER COATING APPLIED (1 MIL) B. AIR DRY FOR MINIMUM OF 30 MINUTES C. BAKED AT 425 DEGREES FOR 1 HOUR
3. QUALITY CONTROL CHECKED FOR UNIFORM APPLICATION AND THICKNESS. APPEARANCE SHALL BE FREE FROM ANY CRACKS, PINHOLES, RUNS, SAGS, FOREIGN MATTER, GRIT, ROUGH PARTICLES OR OTHER SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS.
COATING PROPERTIES:
TRIPAC 2000 BLUE DIFFERS FROM TRADITIONAL FLUOROPOLYMER COATINGS IN ONE VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT – IT IS A COMPOSITE MATERIAL.
1. LOW FRICTION; AS LOW AS 0.02.
2. WEAR RESISTANCE; EVEN UNDER EXTREME PRESSURE
3. CORROSION AND CHEMICAL RESISTANCE IN MOST ENVIRONMENTS
4. WEATHER RESISTANCE AGAINST SUNLIGHT OTHER:
1000 HOUR SALT SPRAY TEST (ASTM –B-117) PERFORMED ON BOLTS THAT HAVE BEEN TORQUED INDICATE THAT IN SOME INSTANCES, SOME OF THE COATING IS REMOVED FROM EITHER THE BOLT HEAD (BY THE WRENCH) OR FROM THE THREADS (BY THE NUT). EVEN WITH THIS DAMAGE, THE BOLT SHOWS MINIMUM RUSTING AND THE NUT IS EASILY REMOVED. BOLTS PROTECTED BY ZINC PLATING AND BY HOT DIPPED GALVANIZING SHOW SIGNIFICANT RUSTING AND THE NUTS CANNOT BE REMOVED UNDER SIMILAR TESTING.

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES When strength requirements are moderate, low-carbon steel is used. High-strength fasteners are made from medium-high carbon or alloy steels and are heat treated to develop desired properties.
Most fasteners are covered by specifications that define required mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, proof load and hardness.
• Tensile Strength : The maximum tensile stress in pounds per sq in. which a material is capable of sustaining, as developed by a tension test.
• Yield Strength : The stress at which a material exhib-its a specified deviation from the proportionality of stress to strain. The deviation is expressed in terms of strain, and in the offset method, usually a strain of 0.2% is specified.
• Proof Load : The point to which a material may be stressed without evidence of permanent deforma-tion.
• Hardness : The resistance of a material to plastic deformation. Usually measured in steels by the Brinell, Rockwell, or Vickers indentation-hardness test methods.
HEAT PROPERTIES Heat treatment covers various techniques that may be used to develop certain end-product characteristics. Customary procedures for fasteners include:
• Stress Relieving : A thermal cycle involving heating to a suitable temperature, usually 1000/1200°F, holding long enough to reduce residual stresses from either cold deformation or thermal treatment, and then cooling slowly enough to minimize the development of new residual stresses.
• Annealing : A thermal cycle involving heating to and holding at a suitable temperature and then cooling at a suitable rate, for such purposes as reducing hardness, improving mechinability, facilitating cold working, producing a desired microstructure, or obtaining desired mechanical or other properties.
• Case Hardening : A term descriptive of one or more processes of hardening steel in which the outer portion, or case, is made substantially harder than the inner portion, or core.
• Quenching and Tempering : Quenching is a thermal process used to increase the hardness and strength of steel. Tempering improves ductility and tough-ness but reduces the quenched hardness.

Hot Dip Galvanized Galvanizing is the practice of coating clean, oxide-free iron or steel with a thin layer of zinc to protect the surface against corrosion. ASTM A153 specification applies to coated fabricated products such as nuts, bolts, washers and anchor bolts. ASTM A123 specification applies to coated fabricated products such as fittings, pipe hangers, channel & pipe supports.
• Shields the base metal from the atmosphere because zinc gives cathodic or sacrificial protection
• Hot Dip Galvanized process provided by Atlas Galvanizing, LLC, Los Angeles, CA
Electroplated ASTM specifications B633 electroplating is an electrochemical process used to deposit a metallic coating on the base material of an object by immersing it in an electrically charged solution so that a suitable low voltage flows through it, causing the metallic coating to be attracted to the object being plated.
• Inexpensive • Sacrificial protection against corrosion • Commonly used on nuts, bolts, washers,
anchor bolts, fittings, pipe hangers, pipe supports, etc.
• Commercial zinc plate .0002 thickness • Zinc Plating process provided by Sonic Plating Co., Inc., Santa Fe Springs, CA

PROPER FLANGE BOLTING Flanges
In theory, if it were possible to have two perfectly mated flanges with total effective contact at all points, a gasket would not be required to effect a seal. Obviously since this is not possible, a gasket is required and its function is to seal two imperfect surfaces. There are limits on the degree of flange surface imperfections that can be sealed successfully with a gasket. Large nicks, dents and gouges must be avoided, since a gasket cannot seal against them properly. Also, a gasket cannot seal improperly aligned flanges. Another problem is waviness in the flanges and warped or bowed flanges. This can be caused by heat during the manufacturing or welding process, internal stress and excessive bolt loads during installation. See figure 1. To obtain a satisfactory seal, it is necessary that basic procedures are followed during installation. These procedures are of fundamental importance for a successful operation no matter what style of gasket or type of bolting materials are used. While these flange installa-tion procedures may seem elementary, they are extremely important and should be carefully followed.
A - Bowing of flange due to too high bolt load
Flange Installation Procedures 1. Inspect the flanges. Check for tool marks,
dents, scratches or corrosion. Look for pitting and any other defects which would make sealing impossible. Repairs must be made before bolting.
2. Inspect the gasket. Verify to be sure the gasket is of the proper material and style. Look for defects or damage.
3. Inspect and clean bolts, nuts and washers. Verify to be sure they are of the specified material.
4. Lubricate the bolt threads and the nut contact surfaces. This cannot be overstressed. The use of an anti-seize compound should be considered to facilitate subsequent disassembly. The better the lubricant, the more consistent the actual achieved bolt stress at installation will be.
5. Center the gasket on the flange. This is extremely vital when raised faced flanges are used.
6. Tighten the bolts approximately 30% to the final torque following the sequence shown in Figure 2 (shown on next page). If the correct tightening sequence is not followed, the flanges can be misaligned, making it impossible to have uniform seating of the gasket. Numbering the bolts may be helpful in following the bolt sequence.
7. Repeat step 6, elevating the torque to 50 to 60 percent of the final torque.
8. Continue tightening in the recommended sequence until the final torque value is reached. Each bolt normally has to be tightened more than once.
9. All gaskets relax after seating. Retightening is recommended 24 hours after installation to compensate for the relaxation. On high-pressure or high-temperature applications, it is recommended that the flanges be retorqued to the required stress after 24 hours at operating pressure and temperatures to compensate for any relaxation.

PROPER FLANGE BOLTING Gaskets
Gaskets are used to create a static seal between two flanges and to maintain that seal under operating conditions. Proper gasket selection is critical and must be considered during the design and engineering process of any system. Once the type of material and style of gasket is determined, proper installation is critical to achieve “seating” of the gasket. A seal is effected by compressing the gasket material and causing it to flow into the imperfections on the flanges so that intimate contact is made preventing leaking of the joint. The most common method of effecting a seal on a flange joint is through compression force applied by bolting.
Bolting A bolt is a spring. It is an elastic member which has been stretched to develop a load by elongating its length. It must not be over-elongated (over-strained), or the elastic limit of the steel will be exceeded. The bolt then deforms and with continued loading (stressing) will quickly fail. To avoid such problems with bolt tightening, the use of a torque wrench is recommended. The designer of the flange system normally specifies the torque required to achieve a proper seal. The inch-per-inch relationship demonstrates that the longer the bolt, the more it must be strained to yield a desired load; thus, the more follow-up or comeback there will be in actual inches. This is highly desirable, since most gasketing materials tend to remold, to relax, to take a permanent set. This is called the creep-relaxation phenomenon. The more follow-up of spring provided by the bolt, the better the retention of stress on the gasket to maintain a leakproof joint. In the same respect, a smaller diameter bolt must be strained more to develop the same load. With the smaller diameter bolt, there is a serious danger that it may be over-strained and stressed beyond the elastic limit, and finally broken. The smaller bolt, within its elastic limit, could give the same additional follow-up
as the larger diameter bolt of greater length.
Torque Torque is a twisting force. When applied to a bolt it is generally expressed in foot pounds. The formula for torque is T = R x S where: R = radius or length of lever S = pounds pull on scale Properly fastened studs and bolts achieve their holding power from the tension (or torque) that is derived from the mating of the external and internal threads subject to the elastic limit of the material.
Bolting Patterns Regardless of the number of bolts, this circular bolt pattern with modification, will provide the correct tightening sequence.
Circular Multi-Bolt Installation Pattern
What torque to apply is a generally asked question, but the answer depends on the variables of material, threads, and lubrication, if any. As previously stated the designer of the flange system normally specifies the required torque.

For over 35 years Pipeline Seal and Insulator, Inc. hasbeen a technology leader in the
field of high quality sealingand isolating products used to
guarantee the safe flow of fluids passingthrough pipeline transmission, distribution and
process piping systems. An installed base of thousands upon thousands of
gaskets and flange isolation kits, effectively sealingand maintaining the integrity of corrosion mitigationprograms everywhere, confirms the effectiveness and
reliability of the PSI system. In fact, PSI flange isola-tion products are relied upon for applications subject
to the most severe conditions (both internal and environmen-tal), for specialized or exotic fluids or for applications subject toextreme temperature and pressure fluctuations.
Flange isolation products include a wide selection of isolat-ing/sealing gaskets along with a variety of sleeves andwashers. For maximum flexibility, components may be orderedseparately or as part of complete flange isolation kits.
Manufacturing facilities are located in the United States andEurope, with sales and service facilities located worldwide. AllPSI facilities are ISO 9002 certified with extensive qualitycontrol procedures to insure total compliance with productperformance and reliability standards.
Additions to the PSI line of flange isolation products are theLineBacker ZeroTM sealing gasket, LineBacker 250TM sealinggasket and LineBacker 251TM sealing gasket, all designed toaddress problems associated with asbestos substitutes andfugitive emissions. This catalog includes suggested flange iso-lation material compatibility charts as well as technical specifi-cations and an ordering/work sheet.

PSI Isolating Gasket Types and Styles
Type “E” GasketsType “E” Gaskets extend to the outside diameter of the flange. They feature precision located bolt holes, to automaticallycenter the gasket, and offer maximum protection againstforeign material “shorting-out” the flange. Type “E” gaskets may be ordered in any one of thefollowing configurations:• LineBacker® Sealing Gaskets• GasketSeal® Sealing Gaskets• Neoprene Faced Phenolic Gaskets• Plain Phenolic Gaskets• Red Devil Gaskets• Yellow Jacket Gaskets• Garlock Gaskets• Teflon® GasketsWhen configured as a LineBacker® Sealing Gasket, thesealing element may be positioned anywherebetween the I.D. of the gasket and I.D. of the bolt circle.
Type “F” GasketsType “F” Gaskets are made to fit within the bolt holecircle of the flange. The O.D. of the gasketextends out to the I.D. of the bolt hole circle forgood protection against foreign material“shorting-out” the flange. When configuredas a LineBacker® Sealing Gasket, the seal-ing element may be positioned anytherebetween the I.D. and O.D. of the gasket. Type “F” gaskets may be ordered in anyone of the following configurations:• LineBacker® Sealing Gaskets• GasketSeal® Sealing Gaskets• Neoprene Faced Phenolic Gaskets• Plain Phenolic Gaskets• Red Devil Gaskets• Yellow Jacket Gaskets• Garlock Gaskets• Teflon® GasketsWhen configured as a LineBacker® Sealing Gasket , thesealing element may be positioned anywhere between the I.D. of thegasket and I.D. of the bolt circle.
Type “D” GasketsType “D” Gaskets are available for RTJ flanges but the LineBacker®
Sealing Gasket is an excellent alternative to “D” gaskets because thesealing element may be positioned anywhere between the I.D. of thegasket and I.D. of the ring groove.

Flat Gaskets
GasketSeal® sealing gaskets are considered one of the most effective methods forsealing and isolating flanges of all types. The gasket con-sists of two molded semi “O” rings (with precisecrown to void ratio) mounted in grooves onopposite sides of an isolating retainer. Whilemaintaining all the advantages of a full “O”ring seal, the semi “O” ring seal eliminatesthe need for a sealing groove in the flangeface to reduce problems associated withalignment. GasketSeal® sealing gasketsincorporate near zero “m” and “y” factorsthat make it possible to effect a positiveseal without tremendous bolt loads requiredwith flat gaskets. GasketSeal® sealing gasketsare available in a wide variety of retainer and sealing element combinations formatching gaskets to service and environmental conditions. Refer to the chart for theGasketSeal® sealing gasket temperature ranges and material compatibilities.
LineBacker® sealing gaskets utilize a patented rectangular sealing element, referred to as a “quad” ring, in combination with a unique groovedesign to effectively seal and isolate flanges of all types. With the unique “quad” ring design, elastic memoryis provided for elastomers not normally associ-ated with this characteristic. Materials suchas polyimide, TFE (Teflon) and vinyl maytherefore be used as sealing elementswhich dramatically increases the optionsavailable for matching gasket materials toservice and environmental conditions. Thisgreater variety of materials also providesexcellent termperature and chemical rangecompatability. LineBacker® sealing gasketsincorporate near zero “m” and “y” factors that make it possible to effect apositive seal without tremendous bolt loads that are required with flat gaskets.Refer to chart for LineBacker® sealing gasket temperature range and materialcompatibilities.
Neoprene Faced Phenolic gaskets have been usedas standard “flat” isolating gaskets in the oiland gas industries for many years. Soft neo-prene rubber sheets are factory applied toboth sides of a laminated phenolic retainerproviding an effective sealing surface. Thetemperature limit of these gaskets isapproximately +175º F. (80º C.).Note: Due to improved sealing characteristics andretainer/seal element options, LineBacker or GasketSealsealing gaskets should be considered in lieu of neoprenefaced phenolic gaskets whenever possible.
Flat gaskets are used in special applica-tions such as elevated temperatures thatoften require materials such as Red Devilor Yellow Jacket. Please contact a PSIrepresentative for additional information onavailable options. Page 4

Sleeves and Washers
Isolating SleevesIsolating sleeves are available in the followingmaterials:• Mylar• Polyethylene• Phenolic• Nomex®• G-7 Silicon Glass• G-10 Epoxy Glass• G-11 Epoxy GlassDesigned to easily fit over standard size flangebolts within standard size bolt holes, PSIisolating sleeves have a wall thickness of 1/32”(0.79mm) and are used with separate isolatingand steel washers. They are available forstandard American bolt sizes from 1/2”(12.7mm) to 3-1/2” (88.9mm) as well as metricbolt sizes from 12mm and larger.
Isolating Washers - Standard 1/8” Thick Isolating washers are available in the followingmaterials:• High Strength Glass Clad Phenolic• G-3 High Temp. Phenolic• G-7 Silicon Glass• G-10 Epoxy Glass• G-11 Epoxy GlassDesigned to provide tough, positive isolation.PSI isolating washers are available for bolt sizesfrom 1/2” (12.7mm) through 3-1/2” (88.9mm)and are made to fit over the isolating sleeves.
One-piece Sleeves and WashersMolded from acetal resin and available for boltdiameters from 1/2” to 1-1/2” (12.7 to 38.1mm),one-piece sleeves and washers are structurallytough but limited to applications where theflange temperature does not exceed +180ºF(+80°C) and compressive loads do not exceed18,000 psi. They are generally used as single washer setsbecause they’re molded to specific lengths and,in many instances, are longer than the thicknessof a single flange. A washer centering ringpositions the steel washer on the unit properlyto avoid uneven pressures on the washers.
Steel WashersSteel washers are designed to fit over theisolating sleeve or the retainer ring on theone-piece sleeves and washers. The outsidediameter is sized to fit within the bolt facing onANSI standard flanges. They are made of 1/8”(3.2mm) thick plated hot-rolled steel.

Century-Line® Pipe Penetration Sleevesare used to create circular sleeved holes in concrete pouredbarriers including; walls, floors, ceilings, structural supportsand tank footings. Molded from non-conductive, high impactresistant HDPE, Century-Line® sleeves are lightweight andeasily installed by one construction worker. They are availablein 16 diameters ranging from 2” to 25” and shipped, from stock, in any desired length.
Features16 sizes 2” to 25” in diameter. In the event of a field or engineeringchange, sleeves may be cut shorter atthe job site using ordinary hand tools(See page 9). Standard sleeves are16” (40.6mm) in length. Longer length models mayalso be quickly fabricated as a custom ordered item.1/8 the weight of steel.Century-Line sleeves are light enough for one worker to install with-out a crane, hoist or helper which reduces installation time andcosts. Century-Line sleeves are easy to stock and store and far lessexpensive to ship, when compared to steel sleeves.Resists water migration. The 2” (50.8mm) water stop collar not only anchors the sleeve inposition but creates a long tortuous path against the migration ofwater around the outside of the sleeve. Adjusts to wall thickness.Century-Line sleeves’ unique hollow water stop collar acts like anexpansion joint, adjusting (up to 1/2” - 12.7mm) to the thickness ofthe wall. This compressive force reacts against the forms like aspring, creating a prevailing tension which maintains proper sleevelocation within the form.Nailer end caps position sleeve precisely in form.Specially designed end caps provide an ideal method for attachingCentury-Line sleeves to the concrete forms. The end caps assurethat the sleeve holds its circular configuration during the pour. Inaddition to keeping out wet concrete, they also prevent dirtfrom entering the sleeve during backfill operations or theinterim construction period. Tough high density polyethylene(HDPE) construction.High impact-resistant HDPE also provides excellentresistance to acids, alkalis and other organic sol-vents. Ideal for cathodic protection sys-tems, these non-conductive sleeves willneither rust, corrode or degrade. Low-temperature properties are such that theymay be installed under any weather con-ditions suitable for pouring concrete. Hightermperature application limit is 150º F. (66ºC.). The sleeve is molded with a texture onthe outside surface to assure a better bond, than most other plastics, to concrete interfaces.

Frequently Asked QuestionsQ - Can Link-Seal modular seals with-stand pressures greater than 20 psi?A - Yes, where pressure exceeds 20psi, key factors to consider are: pipesurface, sleeve surface, seal com-pression, and proper installation tech-niques. Contact our engineering serv-ices for recommendations.
Q - How much angular pipe move-ment will Link-Seal modular sealsallow and still maintain a seal?A - Link-Seal modular seals may allowangular pipe movement or misalign-ment of up to 10 degrees, dependingupon the size of seal used.
Q - Is it necessary to use WS orCS sleeves when installing Link-Seal modular seals?A - WS model steel and CS modelplastic sleeves are specially designedfor use with Link-Seal modular seals. When installed with Link-Seal modular
seals these sleeves provide the bestpossible assurance of a quality wallpenetration system.
Q - Sometimes when installing a belt ofLink-Seal modular seals, it hangsloose on the pipe even though all mysizing calculations are correct. Whydoes it appear that I have too manylinks?A - Link-Seal modular seals are basi-cally sized to fit the opening, not thepipe. Use the assemblies recommend-ed by the charts or calculation. It maynot look right, but it will fit.
Q - Can Link-Seal modular seals beused for penetrations where the pipe isoff-center to the opening?A - Centering is very important.Contact our engineering services foroff-center installation.
