Definition

Subjective test of questions to which students answer/respond in one or more sentences to a specific question assesses the student’s ability to produce, integrate, and express ideas, and allow the student to be original, and creative.

Subjective test include the following items:

Short answer items require the examinee to respond to the item with a word, short phrase, number or a symbol.

Advantages of Short Answer Questions

very easy to construct they are good to test the lowest level of cognitive

taxonomy (knowledge, understanding) Unlike MCQs, there is no guessing on answers,

students must supply an answer. Short Answer Questions are relatively fast to mark and can be marked by different assessors

Disadvantages of Short Answer Questions

they are unsuitable for measuring complex learning outcomes

Students can answer short question by merely memorizing those questions ,the deep knowledge of the student can not be assessed by short question.

Suggestions for Construction of Short answer tests

the question should not be picked up exactly from the book .

the question should not provide any clue . the scoring key should be prepared . Set the questions explicitly and precisely. Assign marks to each question according to its weightage.

It is an item format that requires the student to structure a rather long written response up to several paragraphs

question in the test . Essay tests are to be answered in writing

The examinee requires to provide limited response based on a specified criterion for answering the question.

Advantages of Essay test

can measure complex learning outcomes . emphasize integration and application of

thinking and problem solving . can be easily constructed . examinee free to respond . no guessing as in objective item . It helps students to improve their writing skills such as writing speed, etc.
