Subject: MPH Elective Courses Policy number: MPH P&P 16 1. Scope This policy applies to MPH students of all concentrations. 2. Background The MPH degree is a 42-credit hour program with 19 credit hours of core courses, 12-13 credit hours of concentration courses including a 0 credit departmental seminar course, 4-6 credit hours of public health practice courses (a research project practicum - including a 0 credit orientation to the practicum site - and culminating experience), and 4-7 credit hours of electives.1 Given that electives may comprise 4-7 of 42 credits (~10- 20% of the curriculum), the electives chosen must be of relevance to the program and to the scholarly and/or career objectives of each students to ensure they support the student’s program of study. 3. Policy Students may choose from a pre-approved list of electives. This list includes both courses offered by FHS and those offered by other faculties at AUB that are relevant to the program. The list is approved by departments, and subsequently the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC). The list is made available on the website and appended to this policy (Appendix-1-A) The list of electives is formally reviewed and approved by departments and the GSC at least once every three years based on the experiences of students in the programs as well as recommendations from departments. Academic advisors, shall discuss with students their scholarly and/or career objectives and which of the approved electives is most fitting. If students wish to take a course as an elective that is not within the list they can do so by petitioning the GSC, with a justification of how the course fits their scholarly and/or career objectives. A course at FHS can be offered if at least 7 students register in it. In order to ensure that elective courses are taught, the HPCH and HMP departments can offer a maximum of 3 credits (of non- required courses) per regular semester2 and the EPH and ENHL departments (which also offer MS degrees) can offer a maximum of 6 credits (of non-required courses) per regular semester. 4. Procedure 1. The GPHP administrative coordinator shall inform the HPCH and HMP department chairpersons that no more than 3 credits (of non-required courses) per semester and the EPH and ENHL department chairpersons that no more than 6 credits (of non- required courses) can be offered per semester.
