Subduction Factory Studies in the Izu-Bonin-Mariana Arc
System: Results and Future Plans
Meeting Objectives1) to summarize and discuss what we have
discovered about how the IBM Subduction Factory operates
2) to advance beyond IBM on the general science goals of the Subduction Factory initiative
3) to explore possible integration of MARGINS-SubFac-IBM science goals with the objectives of the other research programs such as IODP, NOAA “Ocean Exploration”, and studies related to Law of the Sea negotiations.
4) To prepare for the future
We are particularly interested in the extent to which we have addressed the principal science objectives of the Subduction Factory experiment and the extent to which further work is needed:
1) Subduction parameters as forcing functions on factory output
2) The volatile cycle through the Subduction Factory
3) Towards mass balance
Also want to examine 3 other important science objectives
Not articulated as such in the original MARGINS science plan, but that are clearly related to MARGINS efforts; two of which are articulated in the IODP Initial Science Plan (ISP):
4) Recycling of Oceanic Lithosphere Into the Deeper Mantle
5) Formation of Continental Crust
In addition, we will use the workshop to identify outstanding issues and progress about how subduction zones form.
Other effortsDatabases
Science Education and Outreach
Natural Hazards
(these will be discussed more extensively at Thursday evening workshop)
2.5 days will be spent reviewing research progressSpeakers: Please leave
time for discussion!
Audience: Please discuss issues of significance
Both: Please focus on what needs to be known
Donald Rumsfeld can provide philosophical guidance for
understanding the Subduction Factory“There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know.” Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Feb. 12, 2002 news briefing.
What are the known knowns? What are the known unknowns? And what are the unknown unknowns?

This is the Third IBM meeting1996 Hayama, Japan
10 US, and 75 Japanese scientists, plus representatives from Australia, Britain, and Germany
2002 Honolulu HIAbout 100 scientists attended, ~ 60% from the United States, most of the rest from Japan, and some from Europe.
What results do we want to be discussing at the next IBM workshop in 2012?I hope results from IODP/ICDP drilling,
ALVIN/SHINKAI/ROV diving, new geophysical and geochemical studies, and GIS/database
Two more things…
We’d like to post powerpoint presentations on the web.
Presenters:please let Cary Kandel know if this is NOT OK.
Do we want to publish a volume of results? If so, we need a couple of
editors!
Thanks, and have a great meeting!
