Bringing Safe Culture Down to Earth with MSJOccupational Safety and Health culture

has become a pillar in improving safety andhealth at the workplace. How to developsuch concept? To date, it is still a challengefor PTNNT and other Newmont sites. One ofthe solutions was to form a Safety TaskForce (STF) Team in 2010. The team thencomes with a new strategic called My SafetyJourney (MSJ).

PTNNT is Proud of Being NTB

PTNNT is proud to be given an opportuni-ty to participate in NTB development. ThusPTNNT keeps trying to give its best.PTNNT's achievement is NTB's achievementand PTNNT is proud of being NTB.

PTNNT General Manager CSR & Govern-ment Relations Rachmat Makkasau assertedthe above during the handover of somepublic facilities built by PTNNT to NTBGovernor Dr. TGH. Zainul Majdi MA inMataram, Thursday (16/10).

"We Have to Operate Differently"

In response to the recent unfavorablesituation faced by industries, particularlymining, many measures have been or will betaken by PTNNT management. "The objec-tive is to keep Batu Hijau copper miningoperate as long as possible. We have tochange if we are to survive. We have to becourageous to start operating in a differentway," said Blake Rhodes, Newmont IndonesiaCountry Manager during the familiarizationof Value Enhancement Initiative to SeniorManagers, Managers and Staffs at theCommunity Hall, Townsite (14/11).

Mining world is facing a gloomyperiod. The fall of commodityprices and the rise of production

costs are believed to be the basic causes. Some world-class mining companies try toseek a way to cope with the current condi-tion. Companies, such as BHP Billiton, RioTinto, Exsrata-including Newmont-also facesuch situation.

Newmont Indonesia Country ManagerBlake Rhodes said it during the familiariza-

tion of Value Enhancement Initiative titledHarmony for Prosperity at the CommunityHall, Townsite (14/11). Newmont Corpora-tion has reviewed its cost structures thor-oughly in all its operations to improveefficiency and effectiveness, includingPTNNT.

Blake said for PTNNT, the managementhas made a comprehensive review ongeneral and administration costs, operationalcosts, capital costs and support costs as wellas efficiency in all sections.

The review is made for the 2013 budgetand PTNNT has reduced its expenditures by$54 million, from $950 million to $896million and will proceed with the efficiencymeasures. Operational costs in 2012 were$300 million higher than that of 2007.“Thus, the condition is very ironic, when thecost is increasing, PTNNT's copper produc-tion is decreasing,” said Blake.

Blake also explained the efficiency effortstaken, including redundancy of expatriate, staff and non-staff employees that iscurrently underway. The objective of thepolicy is to keep Batu Hijau copper miningcompany operate as long as possible. “Wehave to change to survive. We have to becourageous to operate in a different way,”said Blake.

With cost pressures and continuous effortsto reduce cost in all sections, PTNNT wantsto ensure competitive compensation in 2014.PTNNT recognizes the importance ofemployees and tries to negotiate with theunions competitive compensation for theemployees.

In answering one of employee's questionson the company's current condition, Blakesaid that PTNNT is not bankrupt. Effortshave been made to overcome this conditionincluding taking loan from banking syndica-tion.

“Our company is financially strong andgains support of the shareholders. We havesufficient resources to run our business. Yetwe all have to participate and give contribu-tion to ensure the continuation of thecompany's long-term operations. Therefore, each person has to participate in controllingcosts. Spend responsibly,” he said.

These efforts, Blake added, will ensureharmony with the community, employeesand their family, government, labor unionsand the management for our sustainablewelfare to the future for both the stakehold-ers and shareholders.

EXPLORATION

Legal services in Ropang sub-district will come soon. PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) through its 2011 strategicprojects has kicked off the phase one construction of the

police office of the sub-district located within the exploration area. The construction of the two-story building was marked by the

groundbreaking by the Sumbawa Regency Police Chief AKBP YayanHartadi SIP and External Relations Manager for Project ElangExplorations Kasan Mulyono on 24 May in Ropang village, Ropang.

Infrastructure Reps. of Community Development PTNNT AmranHerlambang ST said the office construction costs Rp907.3 million. The budget comes from the exploration budget. “We estimate theconstruction to be completed by end of year,” said Amran, an ITNMalang graduate.

“The construction of 220 meter square building is carried out byCV Remben Takan, a contractor from Lebangkar village. This is amanifestation of local entrepreneur empowerment,” said he.

In addition to Ropang police office, PTNNT plans to build anotherpolice office in Sumbawa city. The land is located in the middle ofthe city in Simpang Sernu.

“According to the plan, the construction of the city police officewith the same design as that in Ropang will kick off this year,” saidAmran.

YOP Develops Strategic Plan

To date, Yayasan Olat Parigi (YOP) hasfor eleven years carried out community capacity building and provided

service access to West Sumbawa people. It isnow the time for the YOP to exerciseintrospection by evaluating its performanceand developing strategic and tactical plansfor the next five years.

“Therefore, collaboration off all compo-nents in YOP is necessary to ensure allaspects are worked thoroughly. Independentfacilitators that are expert in planning anddevelopment are also necessary. “In thisregard, we collaborate with an independenttraining agency named Transform ofMataram,” said Senior Supervisor BusinessDevelopment Comdev Syamsul Bakhri afterattending training on YOP strategic planpreparation at Lesehan Bu Diah, Maluk (9/10).

He asserted the first thing to do withTransform is to assess YOP thoroughly. Theassessment was made last February. Allcomponents, staffs, executives and facilita-tors at YOP were actively involved in theOrganizational Capacity Assessment (OCA).

Six fields assessed include institution

management, programs, human resources, finance, partnership, and documentation. The outcome -at 1 to 5 scale- is 2.5 inaverage. “This means there is still a gapbetween the current condition and the idealcondition to achieve,” said Syamsul.

In order for YOP to operate as expectedand to be self-financed and not to keeprelying on PTNNT, two pillars have to beimplemented: YOP as an empowerment[agency] and YOP as a profit orientedinstitution.

“Thus, four sectors are to be focusedincluding micro finance, packaged drinkingwater, employee cooperative and sugar palmproduction,” said he.

Suyono, Director Transform Mataram, asserted that as an institution, YOP has tocontinue to exist since its position in thecommunity cannot be replaced.

“To some extent YOP has contributed tocommunity development in West Sumbawa. The five years strategic plan is necessary tomanage YOP better in the future,” said he.

Occupational Safety and Healthculture has become a pillar inimproving safety and health at the

workplace. How to develop such concept? Todate, it is still a challenge for PTNNT andother Newmont sites. One of the solutionswas to form a Safety Task Force (STF) Teamin 2010. The team then comes with a newstrategic called My Safety Journey (MSJ).

“MSJ is the chief strategy in encouragingemployees to understand the importance ofsafety as a culture and part of each individu-al. The program requires all employeesparticipate actively and identify necessarybehaviors to minimize serious injury andfatality,” said Sunarto Suwito, SeniorManager Safety Task Force PTNNT, after MSJtraining for Supervisors at Krakatau room,Townsite (25/9).

To bring safe working culture down toearth, Sunarto calls on all parties' involve-ment. In a small team, employees arerequired to show commitment to workingsafely and ensuring the team members to doso. “Thus we can make changes at this site,”said he.

Sunarto admitted that it is not easy tochange someone to a new person since it allrelates with awareness and habit. Yet, withseveral approaches and programs designedby STF team, Sunarto believes awareness on

Bringing Safe Culture Down to Earth with MSJ

the importance of work safety will becomethe part of each employee. One of theapproaches is a role model in safety.

For example, the Transportation Depart-ment is one among 14 departments withrelatively high potential for accidents. In asmall team, they develop a safe culturethrough leadership approach (role model in

safety) and other related programs, such asSafety Leadership Behavior, supervisionimprovement, and remove themselves andothers out of an accident waiting list.

“For the program, we hold one-daytraining for groups working in high riskarea,s and two-day training for staff andsupervisor level,” said he.

In a small team, employees are required to show commitment to working safely.

Reef is a series of hard and solidstructure under or at water surfacewhile coral is marine organism that is

capable of absorbing lime from the seawaterand settles it to form lime stack.

The removal of young coral colonis forconstruction materials, catching coral fish withcyanide and bomb, and disposal of garbage tothe sea may damage the coral reefs. PTNNT iscommitted to conserving the coral reefs aroundSumbawa and East Lombok waters. One of themethods is to transplant the coral and makeartificial reef.

NEWMONT NEWSBest Farmer Lauds Newmont’s role inPromoting Agriculture

Mr Akwasi Asamoah, the 2011National Best PlantainFarmer, has commended

Newmont Ghana for complementingGovernment’s efforts towards thepromotion of agriculture in thecountry.

He said he had chalked successesthrough the cultivation of cocoa, plantain cassava through the assis-tance of the mining company.

Speaking in an interview on Friday,he said, before his association withNewmont Ghana he took farming as ahobby but with the support of thecompany he now runs his farm as a fullcommercial entity.

Mr. Asamoah specifically cited theAgricultural Improvement and LandAccess Programmme (AILAP), a post-resettlement mitigation programmmemeant to assist farmers directlyimpacted by the development of theAhafo Mine, to re-establish theiragricultural livelihoods as one pro-gramme that had transformed his life.

He said the activities earmarkedunder the AILAP programme wasbeneficial to the over 5,000 farmerscurrently working with the pro-gramme.

The AILAP programme, he said, assisted the farmers’ right from theacquisition of land, planting to har-vesting.

Farmers on the AILAP programmmehave been compensated for lands, which fall within Newmont’s mine takearea.

The programme was first implement-ed in 2006 to assist farmers, who hadalready been paid their due compensa-tion to gain access to alternative farmlands and receive adequate trainingfor abundant and higher quality yields.

Newmont established AILAP toincrease crop production, promotecrop diversity, technology adoption, market access, which existed prior tothe start of the Ahafo Mine operationsthrough facilitating access to land, provision of free farm inputs, farmermotivation and improved extensionservices.

“With the help of the AILAP pro-gramme my target is to become theoverall best national farmer in twoyears,” Mr Asamoah.

He urged the government to investpart of revenue generated from non-renewable natural resources intosectors such as agriculture to boost theeconomy.

“We should invest part of the reve-nues from the non-renewable resourc-es in the renewable components ofindustry, of agriculture, of tourism so

Gold miner Newmont has rejectedan accusation that it was involved in the dumping of tailings at

a mine project in North Sulawesi. In an investigative report on Monday, the

Jakarta Globe described as Indonesia's worstcase of mercury poisoning a 2004 incident atBuyat Bay, saying Newmont Nusa Tenggarawas responsible.

Gold mining in the area was insteadconducted by Newmont Minahasa Raya, asibling company of NNT. Both are localsubsidiaries of US mining giant Newmont.

In a letter to the Jakarta Globe, RubyPurnomo, head of corporate communica-tions, denied the company had beenresponsible for any mercury poisoning in thearea, pointing to decisions by the ManadoDistrict Court in 2007 that cleared thecompany of any wrongdoing.

that we better empower the economyin the event that mining industrycannot contribute to developmentanymore,” he said.

He said the AILAP programmeshowed the importance Newmontattached to the agricultural sector inthe country and pledged his commit-ment to continue to count on themining giant for support and direction.

Mr. Asamoah urged the youth toventure into farming as their contribu-tion towards national development.

“The decision was reinforced by theSupreme Court's ruling on 6 January 2009,confirming the allegations of pollution had nobasis in fact,” he said.

Ruby also said that studies conducted bythe government, independent agencies andexperts have “confirmed that there was noenvironmental pollution or damage causedby tailings at Buyat Bay.”

In 2006, NMR and the government signeda Goodwill Agreement to establish anindependent scientific panel tasked withmonitoring environmental conditions of thebay until 2016.

The panel has produced yearly studiescovering issues including health, environ-mental geochemistry and marine ecology,Ruby said, adding that the studies hadconfirmed that “the tailings have caused noadverse impacts to water, fish or people.”

With the light on our heads and atour hands, the eleven of us (one choseto stay at the tent) followed the sandypath, up and steep. We advanced twosteps forward but moved back onestep. We dragged our feet, slowly butsurely amid the temperature of ap-proximately 6 degree Celsius.

When the Italian foreigners failed tocontinue their journey, we keptmoving slowly accompanied by oneporter. The wind and thick fog re-duced our visibility to five metersonly. This also created fine snow onour trembling cheeks.

About six o'clock in the morning, theweather was clear and we took thetime for morning prayers, but a fewmoments later, thick and cold fogcame again. Only edelweiss around uscomforted our determined journey.

Finally, after taking a rest whilesharing foods and drinks, we hurriedup to the top. We cried emotionally. Our exhaustion was paid and weenjoyed our happiness and proud.

Despite of we could not enjoy thescenery because the cloud covered it,we acted playfully and took pictureswhile rolling off a sponsor banner. Itwas about 08.23 and after one hour,we decided to climb down.

The weather was good that thestony and sandy path could be clearlyseen. The journey was rather quickerfor we took the slope down and usedour knee as the support. We arrivedat the campsite around one p.m. andhad lunch, fruits etc. there.

At three o'clock in the afternoon, wepacked up the tent and logistics andcontinued our journey home.
