Habitat for Humanity

at Seattle university

is one of the newer

clubs on campus yet

our involvement

would never lead you

to believe otherwise!

Throughout the year

we have participated

in multiple builds with

both the King County

affiliate as well as

the Island County af-

filiate.

Our focus this year

was to get involve-

ment on builds and

educate Seattle Uni-

versity students

through the builds.

By holding a day

build each quarter

and then participat-

ing in the

Collegiate

Challenge

over

spring

break, we

are rais-

ing aware-

ness

about housing and

activism all over

campus.

We began the school

year with our first

build of the quarter

with King County

HfH. Eight students

who didn't know each

other at the begin-

ning of the day

bonded as they

painted baseboards

and trim. It was a

great way to start

the year off as they

learned about the

housing se-

lection proc-

ess, met one

of the fami-

lies and got

to know a lit-

tle more

about how habitat

works. This first

build was a blast and

helped gain a lot of

interest in the club!

land to see the pro-

gress. We filled a 12 pas-

senger van and devoted

Memorial Day weekend

began an event we hope

to make an annual event.

Our Collegiate Chal-

lenge team developed

such a great relation-

ship with the Island

County Hfh affiliate, we

decided to venture

back up to Whidbey Is-

the whole day to building

and having dinner with

some of the residents of

Whidbey Island. We are

planning on continuing

this tradition of a Memo-

rial Day weekend build

next year!

been snowing

and it got

pretty cold,

but everyone

had a great

time on the

build.

Many stu-

dents would agree with

Katrina, “Saturday was a

great break from the

monotony of studying

and homework assign-

ments.” Shoveling fro-

zen

gravel

and hav-

ing to

use a

pick ax

was

much

needed

the

weekend

after midterms.

During win-

ter quar-

ter, our

club part-

nered with

Seattle Uni-

versity’s

chapter of

Engineers Without Bor-

ders. It was a natural fit

to have a group of en-

gineers working with

habitat. It may have

break from the

monotony of studying

and homework

assignments. I’ve been

given so much and have

been blessed. I wanted

to go to help bless

someone who has a real

need.“ -Katrina

This was our second

year participating in the

Spring Break Collegiate

Challenge. We decided to

work with Island County

because of their loca-

tion; in just over two

hours you are outside of

the hustle and bustle of

Seattle to the gorgeous

Whidbey Island.

This year, we had more

applications than we had

spots which meant we

had to be selective on

who could go. Although it

was tough, a fantastic

group was chosen in De-

cember. We spent winter

quarter fundraising our

goal of $2,000. We sur-

passed our goal by rais-

ing over $3,000 through

our letter writing cam-

paign and support from

Associated Students of

Seattle University.

The week was spent

learning and educating

ourselves on the mis-

sion, the process and

the families of habitat.

Everyone learned how to

use power tools, gained

new friends and our club

made a lasting bond with

their affili-

ate. We

hope to

continue

working

with them

each year!
