---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------With studded ear and a pure silver moon-brooch, aboard a stud-taurus, adorned in charnel-ash, theLifter of my heart, of yore graced the coralline lotus-ee, who piously extolled Him of Brahmapuram, the Lord truly He.Translation: S. A. Sankaranarayanan, Kumbakonam, 2013 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Lord has an ear on which a lady`s ear-jewel is worn. He rides on a bull. Having worn a spotlesslypure white crescent moon of a single phase. He smeared himself with the ash in the cremation groundwhich has the nature of a forest. the thief who has captivated my mind. This person is really the greatone who resides gladly in Piramapuram possessing greatness, where the Lord bestowed his grace onPiraman who is seated in a (lotus) flower having petals, who bowed to him and worshiped him, in thedistant past.Translation: V.M.Subramanya Aiyar – Courtesy: French Institute of Pondichery / EFEO (2006)

_____________________________________________________________________________________ Notes:

Ceekali has twelve names of which Piramapuram is one; as Piraman worshiped the Lord, with his consort the goddess of learning, itgot the name of Pi ramapuram.Piramapuram: the long letter is used to suit the metre. The fact that Piraman worshiped the Lord in Ceekali is mentioned in other

decades of Nanacampantar. Many scholars have written elaborate commentaries on this one stanza. The circumstances in which this patikam was sung is

described in detail in Periya Puranam, Tirunanacampantar Puranam, verses 53-80.Thodu – an ear stud usually worn by women. Since the consort of Siva resides permanently on the left side of His body, this side

sports the thodu and the other ear sports the Kuzhai, the ear stud worn by men.Piramapuram – one of the 12 names of the holy town Sirkazhi. So ca lled because Brahma worshipped Siva here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Having adorned himself with the mature shell of an aged tortoise, a young cobra, and the horn of fullgrowth of a pig; having collected alms in a skull bowl from which the flesh has completelydisappeared; the thief who captivated my mind met the great people who have learning andknowledge acquired by listening to words of wisdom - they worship and praise him with foldedhands. This person is the Lord who rides on a bull and gladly resides in Piramāpuram Translation: V.M.Subramanya Aiyar – Courtesy: French Institute of Pondichery / EFEO (2006)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Laced in ancient chelonian, ever young krait and boar\'s budding tusk, with skinned cranial bowl tobeg, the stealer of my heart graced the cogitant greats that pray, praise and ponder on the kazhal-feet of Him. Upon the bull-on-the-move; the lord for sure is He.Translation: S. A. Sankaranarayanan, Kumbakonam, 2013
