If you love experimenting with new trends and have more of an edgy style, then go for it. It’s best to wear these with shorts or a mini. Keep the rest simple and let the boot be the statement piece. Runway to Real way: a-Line Skirt

Victoria Beckham S/S 2013

Space $189 Cacharel $157 Topshop $45

Christian Dior S/S 2013 Milly F/W 2012

The A-line style skirt was made popular by great designers like Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior in the 1950s. This style has been in and out of fashion many times but the flattering fitted waist and flared hip has made designers bring it back one more time for this season.

A-lines tend to flatter most body types because they are an easy-to-wear style that is forgiving but still has shape. It’s particularly complimentary on women who carry a bit more weight on the bottom half, and the A-line does a great job of defining the waist for a feminine look.

The A-line is universally slimming, wider at the hem than at the waist, thus creating a slight A-shape. It is a timeless silhouette that adds curves where there are none and hides unwanted inches. The nipped waist slims the torso and the subtle flare narrows the hips, thus working with any body type. If you have a straight build, this style gives the illusion of hips. Have an athletic physique? The A-line silhouette balances broad shoulders.

Why is the A-Line silhouette so popular this spring?

What body type does the A-Line look best on?

RESOLUTIONSHow our stylists want to change their 2013

wardrobe habits

Wendy: I want to buy less inexpensive pieces while spending a little more on the things I REALLY want to buy. In the past I’ve opted to buy more items instead of great items. I also want to accessorize more with shoes and statement jewelry.

Arianne: My “every year” rule is that for each garment that comes into my closet, something goes out. My next rule is to honor my body type.

Nazy: My style resolution for 2013 is to take more fashion risks and add more color to my wardrobe.

Lauren: My style is minimalist chic, but this year I venture to wear more cutting-edge graphic prints.

Runway to Real way: Bold Color

Michael Kors S/S 2013

Fausto Puglisi $449 Gap $30 Marc Jacobs $130

Carolina Herrera S/S 2013 Ralph Lauren S/S 2013

I have one style rule for wearing bold colors: embrace it! The average woman is too cautious with color. If bold color scares you, use the bold color in accessories, handbags and even shoes!

Ease into the color trend by wearing one bright piece as an accent feature. Try cinching a little black dress with a cheery yellow or nearly neon orange belt and finish it off with matching peep-toe pumps.

Choose a color you love. The key to personal style is to feel great in what you wear! Some people are comfortable in bold color and others are not. Embrace the trend if it moves you.

Don’t overdo it. If you are wearing separates, wear two or three pieces with a bold color and keep the rest neutral. Also, look for colors that compliment your skin tone the most.

We’re seeing a lot of bold colors coming off of the runway. What are your style rules for wearing bold color this spring?

Runway to Real way: LEATHER

Leather is definitely a “do” – it is a classic, year-round fashion staple. Remember, style is about self-expression; wear leather if it suits your lifestyle and personality. If you do choose to don this trend, leather pieces should be tailored to fit precisely – fit is everything with this material.

I don’t follow a lot of rules; it is more fun to skirt the rules. However, leather is warm, so if you choose to embrace this trend, do it in something that will also give you some room to breathe, like shorts.

Stay away from heavy black biker jackets and instead wear a light-weight leather vest, tank, shorts or mini skirt. There are many light weight options out there such as lambskin that can be worn in warmer months.

An A-line leather skirt is a great option with a lightweight blouse and strappy sandals, or a fitted t-shirt layered with a few necklaces.

Surprisingly, we saw a lot of leather on the runways for spring/summer. Is this a do or don’t in your book?

How should real women wear leather in the warmer months?

Runway to Real way: LEATHER WINTER TO SPRING: Key

PiecesWhat pieces will make

the transition easier

Arianne: Denim, either straight leg or skinny, can be worn full length or cuffed, dressed up or down and is about the most versatile basic in your wardrobe. For spring, cuff it and wear with flats or booties.

Nazy: The leather mini skirt. Wear it with thigh-highs and a chunky sweater for winter, and with bare legs and a lacy top in spring.

Lauren: Metallic accessories. A nighttime staple in winter, they are now appropriate for daytime.

Wendy: Colored jeans. I love how they look with a chunky sweater and boots in winter and then a simple tee and leopard print flats in summer.

Jennifer: A sleeveless shift dress. For the warm weather, put away those opaque tights and the button-down blouse you were layering under this must-have piece!

Keep the hair and makeup simple, and pair your prints with neutral separates and accessories.

I tend to suggest that my clients wear patterns where they want a person’s eyes to go. If you are bigger on top, consider wearing a graphic print in a pencil skirt or cigarette pant. Patterns can also hide imperfections. If you have a little extra in the middle and you don a patterned blouse, the eye will follow the pattern and not focus on the tummy!

Patterns look great together if they both share a few colors or the same color palette.

The most flattering way to wear prints is to keep them proportional with your frame. The size of the print should match the stature of the woman who is wearing it. A petite frame looks best in small prints, whereas a large frame looks best in bigger prints.

Graphic prints seem to be everywhere. What are your style rules for wearing graphic or check print garments?

Page 9: Style for Hire Spring 2013 Report

Lauren: Alexis Bittar Siyabona panther necklace.

Nazy: I have a Coach Legacy Leather Mini Tanner bag in mind. Of course in a bold bright coral which is perfect for spring/summer.

Jennifer: I am pretty much a diehard fan of Kate Spade, so her Norella flats would really add some sparkle to my day!
