“I have a very hectic life,” O’Brien said quickly. “I’m very busy. I’m never still; I’m always on the go.”

O’Brien helps out her husband, who owns O’Brien Remodels, when-ever necessary by assist-ing in hiring or doing background checks on new employees.

She has five kids, two of whom are toddlers. Not to mention she also has two grandchildren from her oldest daughter.

She’s a businesswoman, mother and grandmother. Oh, and then there is the sleeve of tattoos down her arm that mark her most recent journey over life’s obstacles.

Doesn’t really sound like the pedigree one

would expect from an aspiring model, but she doesn’t really seem to care. She’s already done more modeling and been in more magazines than most teenyboppers half her age.

“I just do modeling on the side. It’s my relax-ation zone. When I’m in front of the camera, it becomes my little sanctu-ary,” O’Brien said with a sigh through a laid back smile.

Her Life in InkHer youngest daughter

was born three months prematurely and has been in and out of hos-pitals since. But O’Brien still manages to deal with all the surgeries and doc-tor visits on top of rais-ing a family and keeping

the house-hold togeth-er. And her strength is displayed in bright col-ors splashed across her arm.

“My ink is only about a year and a half old. I got a lot of ink in such a short period of time. It’s all based on the Bible: God, faith, family and love.

“I always wanted to get tattoos, but with the business and me being mar-ried, I didn’t want anyone to judge me. But I wanted something with meaning. I didn’t want to just get anything.”

So, after her daughter’s latest surgery didn’t go as well as planned, she searched for spiritual guid-ance and assis-tance that even-tually led her to church and her first “Women of Faith” conference. And there, listening to

other stories of struggle and

perseverance, she found the help she sought along her own, d i s t i n c t i v e path.

“So that was the beginning of my sleeve. I actually got the heart from the ‘Women of Faith’ con-

ference. Then I added God, faith and love and

started add-ing the piec-

es of my story.”

W h e n O ’ B r i e n

went in to labor pre-m a t u r e l y with her lit-tlest angel, she went Code Blue, which in turn led to the dis-covery of a rare form of cancer. So rare in fact that

t h e r e a r e

reportedly only six known cases in America.

And that gave her the inspiration for the tattoo of the Archangel Michael.

“When I was in the ICU of the cancer unit, I started having dreams of the angel, so it was really important that I added him.”

The Accidental Pin-Up

“I’ve always wanted to model.”

That phrase has been uttered by many a wan-nabe super model with a decent number of curves and some killer looks. But O’Brien was a different type of model. A different breed of woman.

“I wanted to do some-thing for my husband’s birthday, and I’ve never had any really profession-al photos done, so I did a little photo shoot for him as a birthday gift. I did some regular photos, then some sexy ones.

“I was going through the photos trying to edit them, and at the same time I was posting some on Facebook.”

And unbeknownst to her, she hadn’t changed the settings from public to private correctly, and some went on her profile. That’s when her daughter frantically called her on the phone — hysterical over the leaked photos of her scantily clothed moth-er spreading through Facebook. Eventually, the photos found their way to

Facebook modeling pages where they gained popu-larity.

She just sat back and watched.

“I was getting all these ‘likes’, and people were requesting me as their friend, and that’s how it started.

“This wasn’t planned. I went and bought a $12 jacket at Beall’s, and that was my outfit. Shear

Envy did my hair and makeup, and that’s what happened.

“I decided I was going to go all out. I decided I wanted more. I wanted to hit magazines.”

So O’Brien began researching magazines that appealed to her unique tastes. She got all the requirements down and began hiring photog-raphers and setting up her own shoots and sub-mitting to her favorite magazines.

“By the time I knew it, I was getting requests and had people saying ‘We’re going to publish you’.”

She began submitting at the end of December and at the beginning of the new year, she had made it into five mag-azines from January to

Christina O’Brien didn’t think she’d ever model. But after a series of fortunate events, she’s gone beyond that.

C hristina O’Brien talks fast. She’s full of energy and fractures her sentences into separate thoughts like shattered glass. She’s constantly trying to get you to talk faster, too.

‘I wanted something

with meaning. I didn’t want

to just get anything.’

May. And being new to the game didn’t cause her to shy away from the competition.

“I was really honored to compete against the women in Riot Vixen Magazine who have been published 50 or more times.

“When I sent the submission in, I got a response that they want-ed to publish me and they were also giving some of the models a chance to be in the running for the cover.”

And she was one of the models chosen to com-pete for the cover.

Though she would eventually lose the cover, she was thrilled by the chance simply to compete against professionals. And she did, however, come in second place, missing the top spot by a mere 112 votes.

Model Behavior“It’s like a hobby.”O’Brien never entered

the tattooed, sexy and sometime taboo world of underground modeling in order to get some quick cash or start a career.

The way she exciting-ly chats about posing in front of the camera and about gathering ideas for future photo sessions, one can see she genuinely

enjoys the thrill of the shoot.

“People like to shop. I like to model. I don’t make money from it. I actually have to pay, but my reward at the end is having beautiful photos and being published.”

And on June 30, the mommy turned model will turn 37, though she hardly looks it. O’Brien doesn’t seem to worry about age much and still plans to keep on keeping on with her model work, just now seemingly at a furious pace.

“I want to do every-

thing. I just don’t want to do pin-up or ink, I want to do crazy stuff. And, hopefully pretty soon, I’ll be doing a photo shoot underwater.”

Nudie CutieO’Brien doesn’t feel

that, in being a woman, you must drop your drawers in order to get into some of the maga-zine’s she’s been in, even though some do accept nude submissions.

But does she have a problem tossing her top from time to time?

“No,” she said laugh-ing.

“I’ll tell you why. I worked at a gentleman’s club for a little over 10 years. When I was 18, I needed fast cash, fast money. You gotta do what you gotta do.

“I’m very outspoken, very blunt. I’m not shy at all.

“When I’m in front of the camera, it’s different. I’m not going to do it in public, but if I do plan on doing a sexy photoshoot where I am going to be topless or something, it’s because I usually plan it that way.”

She paused and began smiling.

“But sometimes it’s not planned, it just turns out that way. My makeup artist and my hair styl-ist that I’ve worked with before used to warn the photographers,” O’Brien said, howling with laugh-ter.

So, obviously, she has a lighthearted attitude towards the subject and doesn’t feel objectified being a woman in this newfound field. She has strong opinions toward the topic of nudity and feels empowered more

than anything else. And she also adds, “You

don’t have to be nude to be a model. There’s all different kinds of art — all different kinds of models. I choose to do all of it.

“Why not?” And being married

must surely add some sort of conflict to the equation, right?

Wrong.O’Brien said with an

enormous grin, “My hus-band’s very supportive. He has to be; he pays for it.”

Comedian Bill Engvall came through South Texas recently and played at the Victoria Performing Arts Center.

While he was passing through, we got a chance to chat with him a bit about his future acting roles and hanging out with Cheech Marin.

STXscene: How’s the road treat you when you’re out there?

Bill Engvall: It’s get-ting harder. The older I get the more, the travel-ing sucks. (laughs) Every job has it’s downside and, unfortunately for a come-dian, it’s the traveling part. But I get to come home to Texas which is always a good thing. I wish it was at the end of this run instead of the beginning.

STX: Do you get to bring your family along with you?

BE: Not so much any-more. My wife will drive with me every once in a while. If we were going

to be able to stop and visit the ranch, she’d come with me. But from Victoria, I go to Jacksonville, Fla., then New Buffalo, Mich., so it’s a rough road life.

STX: Let’s talk a little about the Bill Engvall show. Basically, you guys discovered Oscar win-ning actress Jennifer Lawrence, correct?

BE: We gave her her first full-time acting job. It’s funny, when she auditioned I remember thinking, this girl has ‘it’. I don’t know how to describe what ‘it’ is, but you just knew that she wasn’t going to be with us for very long because she was destined for big-ger things.

She’s just a sweetheart of a little girl and just genuine as can be, and I hope she stays that way. This won’t be her last Oscar. She’s got that thing that people love.

She was a blast to work with, and bless her

little heart, after she left the Bill Engvall Show the first two movies she made she kept saying my name. (laughs)

STX: You were almost cast in “Winter’s Bone” correct?

BE: No, no, no. I was never up for any-thing. Somebody started that rumor. It’s one of those Wikipedia things – like they think Jeff (Foxworthy) and I are cousins.

STX: You’re also head-ed back to TBS for a new show called “Do It Yourself,” right?

BE: I shot a pilot for them, and we’re waiting to hear back. It’s a little project about people that work in a home improve-ment store, and I get to play this guy who was an executive for Circuit City and got let go, and this was the only job I could get. It was a really fun role.

Also, I’ve sold a drama to TNT kind of loosely based on the old “McCloud” series, so that will be really fun if it goes.

We have a few irons in the fire but nothing really to say it’s going to be on so and so date.

STX: And for “Do It Yourself” did you get to shoot some stuff with Cheech Marin?

BE: Cheech Marin was one of the cast members. As a comedian it was so much fun for me. In between rehearsals, we would sit, and I would talk to him about the old days of comedy when he and Tommy got started and how it’s different now that I’m doing it.

When I walked on the

set, he walked up to me and said, “I’m a big fan.” I went, “Oh my God, Cheech Marin just said he was a big fan!”

I grew up with “Up in Smoke” and all that. That was our rebellion comedy.

STX: Do you have a new album in the works?

BE: I don’t know. I’m working on a bunch of new material, maybe put-ting together an album.

Times have changed. People don’t really buy albums anymore. If I was to do one, I would prob-ably just release it on iTunes or something like that where people can download.

STX: Have you ever thought of doing some-thing like what Louis C.K. did – releasing it all on his own through his website?

BE: I think Louis real-ly broke some ground there, and I think you’re going to see a lot of peo-ple doing that.

It’s just the way of the world now. Social media and all that Internet stuff. It’s not like the old days of when I would go to the record store and buy an album.

One of prized posses-sions is a 45-inch record of “Here’s Your Sign.” When it went gold, they asked if I wanted it on a DVD, and I sad no. I wanted it on an album. I want it like an old gold record. So they made it up, and I have it on my wall. It’s very cool.

STX: It seems like you always have irons in the fire. You’re a really busy guy.

BE: I have to, because idle time is not my friend.
