There being a quorum present, the AGM was opened at 7.30 p.m. Present: As per attached register copy. Apologies: G. Wood, P. Hall, Z. Stokes, S. Gooley, B. Packer, B. Magoulianos, M. Foster, M Watts. D. Lee, R. Macbeth, M. Robinson, T. Winter.

Minutes of previous meeting held on 15th. of June 2010 accepted as a true and accurate record. Moved: Bruce Packer Seconded: D. Martens Carried.

Business arising from those minutes: None

Reports: President: As included in the Annual Report for 2010/2011. A highlight of the year was seeing Paul Mildren, Tom Brice, and Tom Becker back playing in the senior squad. We were very disappointed to miss the finals in the senior team this year, but we thank the senior players and acknowledge Lewis Townsend’s outstanding season.

Congratulations to all teams making the grand final; Under 16(1) and Little League having winning Grand Finals, and Kris McArdle now going to Guam, a fantastic achievement. Also well done to David Lightbody and the Under 14(1) team which was undefeated all season until the grand-final. Also the under16 (2)’s who made the grand final.

Thank you to the senior coaching panel, and also thank you to all of the Junior Coaches. Thank you also to the team managers, scorers, and Umpires. A special mention was made of Ron Macbeth, who is a stalwart of the club, and continues to assist our junior players tirelessly. Also thanks to Karen Tindal who coordinated the U16, and helped with canteen. Many thanks to the bar staff. Thank you also to Jeff Nichols for helping with video footage and photos for the website and the annual report.

Thank you to the Senior Committee; especially David Lee who has done a wonderful job with the grounds, secretary Sue Brebner, Treasurer Ben Seekamp, Bruce Packer, Tony Catt, and Dean Franke, sponsorship and Junior Coordinator.

Rick Mitchell won the Presidents Award, and that award also goes to his family, especially his wife Vicki

In relation to our grounds and the lease, we are in our final season of our lease. At this stage there is no clear outcome on the continuation of our lease. We will work with Mayor Picton in a constructive manner. The lease for Goodwood expires one year after ours.

Acceptance of the report. Moved: David Lightbody Seconded: David Hutton Carried.

Treasurer: Ben Seekamp presented his financial report as printed in the Annual Report.

There was a small deficit, we aim to breakeven, and we are not here to make a profit. We have done very well over the last few years and currently have $21.000 in the bank. Bar takings were down a little, but so were the costs so the profit is the same as last year. The SABL fees are still significant.

The Mildren Masterclass was a successful initiative that helped pay for Paul Mildren’s coaching contract.

Moved: David Lee Seconded: Bruce Packer Carried.

Bruce Packer moved that all other reports be taken as read. Seconded: Peter Duffield

Phil Robinson thanked Bruce Packer for the magnificent job he had done in producing the annual report again.

President’s Report For Season 2011-2012. This year saw the merger of the Sturt Tee ball club with the Sturt Baseball club. This resulted in Tee ball being played on Friday night at Norman Reserve instead of the previous arrangement which had been in place for well over a decade of Tee Ball being played on Sundays at Waite. Given the strong focus our club has on junior development it was very

pleasing to see this merger occur. I would particularly like to thank Richard Stranger who became our Tee ball Coordinator and together with the Tee ball Committee organised our Friday night competition which was re-named by the Australian Baseball Federation to be called Aussie Tee ball, for Under 8s and Rookie Ball for Under 10s.

From all accounts the Friday night competition went very well, and our club is totally committed to its continuance, as it provides the perfect feeder for our junior teams.

Our senior team made the finals for the first time in 12 years. Congratulations to Tony Catt and the boys for this outstanding achievement. It was great to see so many Sturt supporters down at Glenelg to support the Division One team in their finals quest and I know how bitterly disappointed the team and supporters were that we were not able to advance past the first final. Congratulations to Mathew (Macca) Macbeth who was name Rookie of the Year by Baseball SA. It is interesting to note that Macca was 17 years of age this year which was the same age his father Brett was named Rookie of the Year many years ago!

Congratulations also go to Paul Mildren who was named joint Pitcher of the Year with Dushan Ruzic for the Adelaide Bite!

Well done to Tom Brice who was named the MVP for the Adelaide Bite! This is an outstanding achievement! Congratulations Tom!

Congratulations also to Tom Brice and Paul Mildren who both were selected in the Australian team to play at the International Baseball Federation World Cup in Panama in October and well done to Tom Brice who was selected in the All Stars Team at the conclusion of the series.

Sturt has been successful for many years with its junior representation in finals but I cannot remember a time like this season where we had so many senior and junior teams in finals!

Congratulations to the Division 2, 3 and 6 all making finals. Special mention should be made of Division 4 who this season moved from being a social team to focussing on development and extending our pyramid of senior players and developing our junior players. Our philosophy for many years has been that Division 3 is for putting pressure on selection for Division 1 and 2 and this philosophy has now been extended to Division 4.

Well done to Norm Sluga assisted by Kris McArdle for developing the Division 4 team.

Page 19: Sturt Baseball Club Inc....2003 D. French D. Lee 2009 D. Carter J. Snellgrove 2004 S. Warrilow A. Roeger 2010 P. Turner T. O’Connell 2005 B. Cattalano B. Papps, A. Young 2011 P.

19

Once again our junior teams excelled this season with all junior teams except one making finals and Sturt regaining the Baseball SA Junior Club of the Year trophy! Our club has previously won this award three years in a row in 2003/04, 2004/05 and 2005/06.

Special thanks to John McClure who has hit the ground running as the Junior Coordinator this season. Great job John!

Congratulations to the Little League-1 Sturt Team- Premiers for the third year in a row! Well done to the boys and coach Jamie Knuckey and manager Jayme Bennetts. Commiserations to the Under 14/1 Team coached by Garry Wood who went through the season undefeated only to be beaten in the grand final by West Torrens by one run! This is particularly cruel as it is the second year in a row this team has gone through the season to then be beaten in the Grand Final.

Commiserations also go to the Under 16- Saints Team who played off in the Grand Final and were beaten by Port Adelaide. Well done boys on making the grand final and special thanks to Glen 'Bones' McDonald for coaching them. Congratulations to Harrison Knuckey who won the Baseball SA Little League Major South MVP and to Robbie Brennan who won the SA Little League Minor South MVP.

Well done to Mitchell Lightbody who was awarded the Brewers South Australia future player award 2011/12.

Congratulations to all the Sturt players who represented the state this year. Once again Sturt was well represented with 15 players being selected over the Under 18, Under 16 and Little League competitions.

Congratulations to our Under 18 players namely; Matthew Franke, Mathew Macbeth, Dakota Mitchell, Sam Roberts and Harrison Wood. Congratulations to our Under 16 players namely; Max Guehrer, Tyler Horrigan, Max Walker, Shaun Wright and reserve Errol Burns.

Congratulations to our Under 14 players namely Brodie Macbeth, Jordan McArdle, Zac Lunnon, Stuart Brennan and Mitchell Lightbody.

Congratulations to Matthew Macbeth, Shaun Wright and Dakota Mitchell who have been selected to attend the Baseball Academy in Queensland.

Well done to Dakota Mitchell who was selected in the Under 18 AAA Oceania Championships National Team which played in Guam.

Well done also to Mathew Franke, Shaun Wright and Max Guehrer who made the State Schoolboys side. There are many people that have donated so much of their time and expertise

o A special thanks to all the team managers, scorers and to those who umpired

games for us. We cannot run the club without you!

o Ron Macbeth – who has once again provided so much training to our younger players. You are a legend of our club and we thank you for all that you do for our players!

o Special thanks go to Karen Tindall for her generous sponsorship of supplying those very tasty donuts, the hot dogs and the slushy machine.

o I would also like to specifically thank our bar staff of Sonia Delloso and Rosanna Visintin who have gone way beyond the call of duty in not only running the bar but also ensuring that there was a range of food available from the bar and also doing such a wonderful job keeping our clubrooms clean! Thank you ladies!

Finally the Senior Committee- we are very fortunate to have a group of dedicated people prepared to put in the time to run our club, therefore my thanks go to David Lee, Tony Catt, Sue Brebner, Ben Seekamp, Bruce Packer, Dean Franke, Tom Winter who joined the committee this year, and our new junior coordinator John McClure who all served on the Senior Committee this year.

A number of the people on the committee had multiple roles which I would like to specifically acknowledge.

o Firstly to Dean Franke who has once again cooked the BBQ on Thursday nights with Norm Sluga. Dean also coordinated the fundraising efforts and did a magnificent job in gaining many more sponsors. Thank you Dean!

o David Lee is now in his second year on the Committee and as you are aware is a former winner of the President's Award. The work and dedication that David has put into the club once again this season has to be seen to be

Page 21: Sturt Baseball Club Inc....2003 D. French D. Lee 2009 D. Carter J. Snellgrove 2004 S. Warrilow A. Roeger 2010 P. Turner T. O’Connell 2005 B. Cattalano B. Papps, A. Young 2011 P.

believed! David has spent nearly all of his spare time after work on weekends and in his holidays working on the grounds and I think you will agree that the grounds looked magnificent this season. Apart from the grounds David remains the Division 1 manager and also assists me in many other ways. Thank you David.

o Sue Brebner has once again been the Secretary to the Committee and also assisted us with advice on a range of matters and together with Carol Burns has once again entered all our Senior stats into our online scoring system which is on our website.

o Ben Seekamp who provides us with his financial expertise as our treasurer. We are very lucky to have someone with his financial knowledge in this critical role.

o Tom Winter in his first year on the committee has taken on the role of management of all of our equipment - a role that he has done with distinction- thank you Tom!

o Bruce Packer who once again has assisted the Committee in many ways as

Vice President, including the preparation of that outstanding Annual Report and setting up the sound systems for all of our special events! Bruce has previously won the President’s Award on many occasions, has been awarded Club Life Membership, and is also a former Baseball SA Volunteer of the Year. Thank you Bruce once again for your service to our club.

I would also like to acknowledge all of our sponsors and particularly our Major sponsors including Tony Catt from Catapult Wealth, , Kingspan, Mal Watts, Bicton Constructions through Peter and Janine Duffield, Bill Last from Last Lawyers and Glen Passmore from Monumental Kitchens- your support is invaluable to our club and greatly appreciated. Thank you also to Jeff Nicholas for all those great photos every week that go on the front page of our website! Thank you also to my wife Kathy and family for their understanding for the amount of time that the role of President inevitably takes up. The President's Award for 2011-12 season went to Tony Catt.

It really is hard to know where to start to acknowledge and thank Tony for his dedication, time and love that he has for this club. I have had the opportunity to work closely with Tony over the best part of a decade as a fellow Committee Member but also as his Team Manager when Tony was coaching junior grades of baseball.

Page 22: Sturt Baseball Club Inc....2003 D. French D. Lee 2009 D. Carter J. Snellgrove 2004 S. Warrilow A. Roeger 2010 P. Turner T. O’Connell 2005 B. Cattalano B. Papps, A. Young 2011 P.

22

The amount of time and care that Tony has taken in developing our junior players both on and off the field is extraordinary. I am aware of how often he will call players, mentor them and assist them whether it is in regard to baseball, career choices, overseas baseball opportunities or life in general. Tony has also been a major sponsor of our club for more years than I can remember. In addition as the senior coach, Tony refused to take a salary, as he preferred the money to be used within the club. Tony is a Player Life Member and last year was inducted as a Life Member of our Club. As you are aware Tony is stepping down as Senior Coach this season, but I know that with his son Angus coming through the ranks Tony will be around the club next year assisting in some way. Thank you also to Tony's wife Lisa for her understanding.

Treasurers Report Year End 30/04/2012.

The Sturt Baseball Club recorded surplus of $11,450.49 for the year ending 30th April 2012. This is a good result but one that is inflated by the merging of the Sturt T-Ball Club with us and being in receipt of their cash on hand of $5,600. T-Ball provided an additional income stream with some 100 additional players and more specifically the parents who had a drink or two on Friday nights! Bar & Canteen

Sales were well up on last year. I believe this to be mainly due to the addition of Friday night T-Ball which often saw a good crowd of parents enjoy a beverage and a sausage. The Gross Profit margin was strong and as usual helped by Bob Booker chasing the best deal to keep our cost down. The bar management continue to do a great job and this is an important profit centre to ensure we keep subs to a minimum. Subscriptions

Player subscriptions were up mainly due to the introduction of T-Ball subscriptions. Non payment of subs was minimal. Ground Rental

Scotch used the ground although not as much as previously and the Bulls had use of the ground and club during the winter. Sponsorship / Donations

Sponsorship was down on the year before, but last did include the installation of Air-Conditioning as a sponsorship arrangement. With the introduction of T-Ball we will attempt to lure some sponsors to be directly associated with this. Baseball Equipment

Baseball Equipment was down due to not having the $10,000 Government Grant to spend. Expenditure level was good. Ground and Club Maintenance

Expenditure was down on previous years with just basic maintenance done. While our lease is not long term we have no plans to do major works. Insurance

This is made up of building insurance, public liability and player insurance. The increase was primarily due to the T-Ball players. SABL / Umpire Fees

SABL fees are our largest expense and we were able to pay these on time and be completely up to date with them. Umpire fees too are significant but expected and all have been paid.

Player Costs

For the second year these costs relate to coaching assistance to the senior group as well as the tuition given by Paul Mildren running the Mildren Masterclass which a small group paid to attend. Sundry

Sundry is mainly made up of Internet subscription ($333), new laptop ($721) other minor items. T-Ball Expenses

Some of these were one off start up expenses and we expect them to decrease next year. We were also charged $16.60 per T-Ball player for the player pack which included glove, ball and other items. Summary

Overall this is a good result even if you remove the T-Ball donation. It allows us to maintain cash reserves and build funds to ensure that when we can and need to do a major project we have the funds necessary to do it. I believe the attached figures to be a true and correct summary of the financials of the Sturt Baseball Club Inc for the year ending 30/4/12.

Senior Club Coaches Report 2011-2012.

Won 14 Lost 9 Drew 1 It is with great joy and a tinge of sadness that I write this report as the Division 1 coach for the last time. This journey started out 5 years ago with some clear objectives in mind.

‐ To develop the young talent that was coming through the junior divisions. ‐ To improve the training culture of the senior squad. ‐ To restore pride in wearing the Sturt uniform. ‐ To improve the image and leadership of players within the club. ‐ To reconnect Division 1 through to Division 4. ‐ To bring a ‘winning’ culture back to the club. ‐ To play finals baseball. I can confidently say that all of these objectives have been achieved but could not have occurred without a lot of help. People such as Tom Winter and Rick Mitchell in particular have been there the whole way through and I am eternally grateful for the sacrifices you have made. This season was started with a high level of expectation. This was the first time in a long time this group had experienced this. A solid preseason was helped with the arrival of Chris Lawson to the club from Glenelg. Chris brought an enormous amount of experience to the team and most importantly knew how to win which is important to continually improve our culture at Sturt. The season kicked of well and even without a number of players with Bite commitments, the squad kept winning its fair share of games. However the end of the season got a bit nerve wracking! Finals baseball was back. Division 1 have not played finals baseball for 12 years and I sincerely hope it is not another 12 years before that happens again! This squad could have beaten anyone on any given day, but as many of you know baseball doesn’t let this happen. Unfortunately we ran into a seasoned group of players in Glenelg in the first week of the finals and lost two nail biters. But let’s not forget what a great group of baseballers this is. Matt Macbeth – what a player he is going to be – congratulations on winning the Rookie of the Year. You thoroughly deserve this award. Dane Adkins – what a great bloke to have on your team. Hits for power, has great defensive skills and can run like the wind. Plus he is a good bloke! His season was outstanding and well done on winning the hitting award.

Chris Lawson – came to Sturt to get more innings on the mound and it worked well for Chris and the team. Chris ended up with a 9-1 win loss record and was clearly our Best and Fairest for the year. Well done. Jackson Brebner –Russ – the kid with all the talent but is just working out how much he needs to train…..what a great year. You took another step forwards, and I have enjoyed every minute of coaching you. There are many other players that should get mentioned but I would take up to much of the annual report! Thanks need to go to David Lee for his tireless work on the ground and as manager of the Division 1 team. You are a legend. Thanks to all the ladies that scored this season. Heather Turner, Carol Burns and Sue Brebner. We couldn’t do it without you. Thanks to norm and Dean Franke for cooking the BBQ on Thursday nights – the boys love it and it is a great tradition to keep going. Thanks to the bar girls – I assume you have lost my bar tab now that I am not coaching anymore…. Thanks to Phil and the senior committee for their fantastic support over the last 5 years. This support has given me the opportunity to develop this group as I wanted, and I hope you are all proud of where it has ended up. The most thanks must go to my wife and two kids. Lisa has had to endure a lot during the last 10 years, and she has done so without complaint, and has been thoroughly supportive of my ambitions and dreams at the Sturt Baseball Club. So another era begins. Leadership is the key issue for the senior squad and for the club as a whole. Show the group what you believe in, have passion for the club and have a burning desire to support all the players. Some are called leaders, but all they do is have control. True leaders inspire people to follow.

Division 2 Report 2011-2012. After coaching at William Woods University in Missouri for the last 3 years and I was given the pleasure of coaching the Sturt division 2 team for the 2011-2012 season. Baseball has the same rules across the globe, yet the different style of baseball and players took a while to get used to, but it was definitely a good experience. Overall I believe we had a successful year, but did not live up to our potential. I believe as I hope the players do, that we should have ended the season on a better note. I would like to thank Sue Brebner for scoring and doing the stats each week, and also Heather Turner, who filled in a couple of times. Having an accurate scorebook is something a coach should not take for granted. So again, thank you ladies. I would also like to thank the senior coaching staff for the work on and off the field this past season as well as the many phone calls that go along with it. Thank you to David Lee for keeping the field up to a high standard all year. Also thanks to the committee who helped to run a club to let the guys enjoy playing the game they love. Lastly I want to thank the players. Thank you for allowing me to coach you guys this year, and thank you for your efforts.

We finished the season with a 9-7-2 record which enabled us to finish 6th and just scrape into the finals. Unfortunately we lost in the first round of the finals to West Torrens, who we had previously beaten earlier in the season. Offensively we had been very strong all year until the last few games we played, which included our one and only finals game. Losing momentum in the last month of the season I believe ultimately hurt us, and made for a short finals run.

We played some very good baseball during the year, and I am proud of all the players, as I know you all contributed in some way. There is a lot of potential for this group, and I believe they will perform better in the future. I used 30 plus players this year which is quite a long list for a good division 2 team. Again, I want to thank all the players for their efforts all season which includes everyone that helped out, and sat on the bench, and helped in any way that they could. That group often included young guys as well as 'A' grade players that wanted to help out. This is something very important to the success of a club. It was very evident when we played well that everyone in the side was contributing and there was a real team feel. That is something that a successful team needs to do every week. Everyone needs to be on the same page, believing and working together.

MVP – At the end of the season I was not surprised to see I had a tie for this award. I am glad to give this award to both Will Frogley and Tom Faehse. These two players always gave their all on the field, and were some of the leaders of this team. Frogley played 3rd base solidly all year, as Faehse did at 2nd. Faehse is a very good team hitter in the box. He does a great job of bunting, moving the runners, and setting them up to be brought in. Frogley hit behind Faehse in the line-up, and benefitted by this with a strong average and high RBI count. Will Frogley also receives the Batting trophy for this season. He was very dangerous in the box and always was a tough out. Congratulations to both of you on good seasons.

Coaches Trophy – I am giving the trophy to Sam Hollis for his efforts this season. “Slamming Sammy” Hollis played a solid left field for the team this year as well as coming up with several clutch hits including his first grand slam of his career. Sam is very much a team player who is eager to learn and help out his team and club. Great job this year Sam and keep up the good work!

Thank you again to all the players and to the club and everyone that helped me during the 2011-2012 season.

Division 3 Report 2011-2012. With the depth of players this year in the senior group, we were quietly confident of a good year. To make finals for the first time for a long time was a great effort but going out in the first round was a little disappointing. I thought we were a lot better than the final standings indicated. We had some outstanding team performances through the year, we beat Goodwood twice through the year in 2 sensational games of baseball, and even though we lost we pushed the premiers in both games we played so we know as a team what level we need to be every game through the year and next year we have to make sure we play at this level every week. Individually we had some outstanding performances; we had Ben Packer come back to the 3s and had some very good games. Craig Wright was another to come down to the 3s and he looked like he was having fun, and his performances with the bat and on the hill showed

Page 30: Sturt Baseball Club Inc....2003 D. French D. Lee 2009 D. Carter J. Snellgrove 2004 S. Warrilow A. Roeger 2010 P. Turner T. O’Connell 2005 B. Cattalano B. Papps, A. Young 2011 P.

this, his batting average for the year was .384 and on the hill some days he was unhittable with 39 innings for 11 runs with an era of 2.53. We had 3 players back to the club this year Stuart Crutchley who did a great job when he wasn’t playing 2s , Nicolas Morgan who was a rock at 1st base and had a great year in the box hitting .411, and the last bloke back was Stan Warrilow, who was breath of fresh air. He was like a 14 year old, you could put him anywhere and he was just happy he was playing. He did a fantastic job in any position, with the bat he batted an amazing .562 and on the hill he bamboozled the opposition with his old school 12 to 6 curve. One of the juniors we blooded this year was 13 year old Jordan McArdle, who did an outstanding job for us at Short Stop ( later we found out he had never played SS before , not that you could tell), and in the box he wasn’t intimidated with some nice pieces , showing the older guys some times all you have to do is just go up there and hit the ball. Last but not least another wonderful job by our catcher Michael Robinson who had been battling a shoulder injury all year but still gave his all. With the taste of a finals loss burning, it has to be that everyone who plays 3s must want to go 2 steps further, and play in the final game of the year for true success. We know we have the ability to match it with anybody on any park anytime, now its time we showed it, over and out for another year. Thank you all for your support and effort through a tough season.

Rick Mitchell Division 3 Coach. 2011-2012.

Division 4 Report 2011-2012. This year the club took a strategic outlook and a structured focus for the Division 4 side. The focus was on building depth in the club and offering an opportunity for junior players to play senior level baseball under the guidance of some experienced players. A quote from our President: In terms of the Senior structure, as you all know, for many years we have been considering Division1, 2 and 3 as our Senior squad with players being moved between these levels based on performance and their attendance at training. Our philosophy has been to build up and develop as many of the junior players as possible by giving them this "senior" experience. This year we have extended this goal by re-orienting Division 4 to also be a competitive side and as such extend the opportunities for our junior players. So, how did we achieve in year one? The team played 18 games for 9 wins and 9 losses and just missed out on the finals by percentage. This was a big turn- around from the previous year of 5 wins and 13 losses.

For the first game of the season, the team was belted playing Glenelg. The team went down 11-0 and only gathered 2 hits for the game. Looking back, the team was not at full strength and there were still a number of key players involved in the Australian Masters games. From there, the team started to develop and notched up a few wins. There were a number of juniors being rotated through the team from both the U/16 and U/18 sides. The team also picked up two players in Sam Bates and Dylan Holt who joined the team on a permanent basis. There were also two games against Woodville and Goodwood that were lost due to errors. These two games would ultimately cost us the season. At the main Christmas break, the team had 3 wins and 6 losses. We should have been 5 wins and 4 losses and placed in the top four. After the Christmas break we notched up 4 wins on the trot. This was due to some great defensive work from the team and the consistent pitching of Matt Mulryan, and support of Pete Turner and Adrian Hill. Suddenly, the team was on a high and really looking good for a finals birth. Then two losses in a row gave us a reality check. This made life difficult as we needed to win our last two games of the season to play in the finals. The team picked up Dave Hirst and straight away started him on the mound. Against 3rd placed Port, Dave pitched a great game for nine innings and only gave up one hit. Again our defence was solid. The final game against 2nd placed H & G saw us go down 3-0, and with it the chance to play in the finals. To sum up the season, we had a turn- around from last year and were a competitive side. In all we had 8 juniors rotate through the team during the season - Max Guehrer, Errol Burns, Haz Lightbody, Jordan McArdle, Sam Duffield, Max Walker, Josh Tindall and Alex Milburn. These juniors played some exceptional baseball and at times, matched it with the best. After this year’s performance, the future for the Division 4 side certainly looks good. Next year, we will need to challenge ourselves, set goals, and be prepared to hit the ground running. Finally, we would like to acknowledge Sue Mulryan for her great efforts as team scorer, and Dave Lee for the preparation and maintenance of the baseball grounds. We would also like to thank all the sponsors that get behind the club and in particular Craig Watts for his sponsorship of the Division 4 team through PPI Promotion & Apparel.

Division 6 Report 2011-2012.

This season we again tried to fill two teams, a division 6 and a division 7. As the club had decided that division 1 to 4 would be competitive sides, and division 6 & 7 would be more social baseball. We ended up with 28 players on the list, and from what I can gather the two sides had a very good season. I organised the two teams through the week to make sure there was enough players and then coached the division 6 side on the weekend.

The division 6 side was a success this year as it was the first time in many years that we had made finals. We played consistent baseball throughout the season with a team that was made up of mostly the same players. We introduced a new player to the world of baseball at Sturt, and I am positive that he will return for next season. Wallace Long is his name, and he came from Sydney, found a house to rent and then looked up the closest baseball club to home, luckily for us it was Sturt. We also had the usuals play this season, with Chris Small (Coach), Barry Lunnon, Rick Trembath, Mark Burns, Glenn Young, Glen McDonald, David Lee, Chris Day, David Brock and Ben Colyer. We also introduced some young players that had played at Sturt in their junior days, but stopped as they found girls and work, luckily they came back to play, as they made a big difference to the rest of the side. They were Trent Small and Jay Lunnon; Jarrad Small also joined us after Christmas and played for the second half of the season. We also had a few fill-ins for some of the games, and one of those was Adrian Hill. Cameron Young also filled in for a game at Henley and Grange for his first senior game at the age of 13, not to bad I must say.

David Brock was one of the unlucky ones this season with injury, as he looks like he needs a recon on his knee after running to first base. Glen Young also did his rotator cuff and will not be the same, while Trent also hurt his shoulder, and only time will tell how he goes for next season.

For the season we ended up fourth on the ladder at the end of the minor round, and faced Adelaide at Adelaide for the first elimination final. We had played Adelaide twice through season and beaten them both times on their home ground, so I was feeling confident that we could win and move onto the second round of finals. However we did not turn up to play, and although we had our chance, we ended up going down 2 to 0 to end our season.

One of the main reasons I think we did improve this season was we had a training session every Tuesday night at Waite, and with this it improved our game from fielding to hitting and even throwing and catching. It is a simple game, baseball, as long as you do the little things; better known as the one percenters.

Thanks to all who played this season, and a big thanks must to go to our scorers Carol Burns, Jo Trembath and Janet Young. It is ladies like this that make game day and writing reports so much easier. If you want to come out and have a hit and run and enjoy a couple of hours on a Saturday with some good friends, then make sure you sign up for Division 6 or 7 for next season. Look out next season, as we will look to go all the way to the top.

Division 7 Report 2011-2012. This season we started a great new system with players being shared between Div 6 and Div 7, although the core teams stayed the same, this ensured that there were always enough players on the day. A big thanks to Smally for co-ordinating the players for both teams each week, it made my job a lot easier! We also had a great range of age and experience on the team with the baseball minds of AJ, Carter and Turner mixing with the newer players, who I'm sure, have learned a few handy tips. It has been good to see some of the newer guys improve dramatically. Thompson for one, has only started pitching this season, and did a stella job. Oatsey also continued to dominate 1st base and batted well. Smales was a bullet around the bases and did a great job at 2nd. Although I would consider all of us 'Team Players' there were a couple of stand outs. Phil Martin could always be depended on to back the coaching team up if we were unable to attend, as well as being a positive force in the dugout. The same could be said for JR (Justin Ransford), who was always backing the batters and encouraging all, not to mention being an outstanding all rounder. As a first for me as coach, I was spoilt for choice when it came to pitchers (those who played Div 6 with me 09/10 will understand). Jayke Wayne was an outstanding young fella right from the start, always having fun, but pitched like a pro. We also had help from AJ who did well, but suffered a back injury early on and missed a few. Jules Potiki was a consistent pitcher, with a great left arm, who kept the runners at 1st on their toes, and finally Chris Thompson, who did himself proud. Oatsey also had a go on the mound, and did well, but I was away and unfortunately missed it. Keep it up Dan and thanks for the motivational emails during the season. Cheers also to our catchers who suffered the heat on many occasions and always did the job well without complaint, AJ, Carts, and JR, cheers. Thanks to all of the team for playing in the spirit of the game, and having fun each week, we did well and I'm proud of our achievements. Thanks to Jules Potiki for coaching with me, always good for advice and Ditmar Guehrer could also always be depended on for a hand.....And did I mention J McClure for his sense of humour? Nah forget it.

Junior Coordinator’s Report 2011-2012. Season 2011/12 from the junior perspective was the most successful season for the club as a whole since 2005/06 the last time we won the Junior Trophy for the best performed club in the league. We are number one out of 17, a marvellous effort, one we should be very proud of as a club. The last few years had seen the club narrowly miss for the trophy. We are no longer the hunters, we are the hunted. Our division one sides across the age groups performed superbly and scored a win % of 77.87% to narrowly pip our great junior rivals West Torrens for the Junior Club trophy. As the rookie Junior Co-ordinator I don’t believe I can take much of the credit. As they say “one swallow doesn’t make a season” and this is certainly the case in junior sport. This season’s result is the collective effort of many others over a long period of time. This in turn has made our juniors so strong. The coaches and managers are passionate and motivated and this is passed on to the kids. Every coach took ownership of their side leaving little to be done. That’s not to say it was plain sailing. There were some strong differences of opinion that saw a couple of long time club men leave. That was disappointing and unfortunate but life moves on. Nothing brings out the passions like kids’ sport. I believe the role of the junior co-ordinator is to work with the major stakeholders (the coaches, players and parents collectively) to make their jobs as easy and enjoyable as possible. After all it’s supposed to be fun. Smile. The behaviour of all was exemplary with no complaints coming our way. Player behaviour was again generally exemplary. Win or lose we want to play hard but fair. Passion with a touch of grunt. It’s nice to hear the compliments from the other clubs. Viva la Sturt! A change we brought in this season was to have the 12’s and 14’s train at the club rather than at Waite as in previous years. Mixed reactions. The idea was to try and get the first and second time parents involved and associate with the club from the very beginning. The younger players see the older boys and young men and realise that they have something to aspire to. Every older player is a role model in some way to the younger boys. Conversely it made for a bit of congestion having just the one ground to deal with. Thanks to David Lee for his efforts in getting the strip prepared and looking great under a fair bit of time and pressure. Anyone who wants to help – he’s your man. Thinks he’s Les Burdett. We continued to use Flinders. Looked a treat in early March. Fortunately we had enough rain to avoid the dust bowl it has been in the past. As far as junior ground I believe it does the job. Facilities are primitive, shade decidedly missing and it’s not at Sturt. Could be worse. Maybe the “baseball fairy” might come down from the sky and grant us a home with three grounds! I wonder where that is? We are victims of our own success. Tee ball switched from Sunday mornings at Waite to Friday nights at Sturt. As a “product” of tee ball myself, first as a parent and then as a coach I can’t emphasise the importance of this activity. As a father of two boys I saw this as a small window of opportunity to be really involved with my sons and to have a great time whilst they are still boys. You only get one crack and I liked to believe that as a club we’re in the business of selling happy memories. No one remembers on his/her death bed the extra hours they put in at work. I encourage all parents to step up to plate and get involved -we need your help. From tee ball comes junior baseballers and without juniors there are no senior baseballers

We fielded 8 teams; seven out of the 8 finished in the top 4 in their league something collectively as a club we can be very proud of. We played 125 home and away games winning a remarkable 67.6% of all games played. We played 3 Grand Finals for 2 premierships. 18’s – had a good season narrowly losing their preliminary final 1-0. This is probably the most difficult age range to coach, constant disruption with players moving between the 18’s and seniors and also dealing with 16 & 17 year olds to play at 8:30AM on a Sunday morning! Jeff Nicholas and Peter Duffield from my point of view did a great job and what problems arose dealt with them effectively. Having the big fella Mark Hutton around helps everyone walks a little taller. His baseball journey should be the goal of every boy that begins playing baseball at our club. 16’’s – after a rocky start with a few issues settled down and played some great ball. The Ones were well drilled and organised and made it to the preliminary finals. Led by Coach Kris McArdle, Manager Ditmar Guehrer and pitching Coach Rick Trembath they rarely required assistance. The 16/2 Saints were coached by club legend and mister nice guy Glen McDonald and ably assisted by Simon Gray. Lost a Grand Final to Port who fielded there only side in division two. Had a few up and downs early on in the season but took everything in their stride. Another wonderful effort! 14’s – Sturt was led by Garry Wood, managed by David Lightbody and ably assisted by Barry Lunnon. They had a great season and at times were superb, undefeated through the minor rounds and lost the Grand Final by 2 paltry runs. This is a talent laden team. Two years of no minor round losses is a memorable effort. Close but no cigar. The 14 Saints had the polar opposite season, one draw and no wins in division one. Hind sight is a beautiful thing and we won’t make the same mistake again. We under estimated the quality of division one and should have played this team in the twos. The logic was we had another 6 players of Division One standard and that the other boys would be “carried”. Didn’t work out that way. The majority of this side will form our 14/1’s next season and know what to expect. Despite not winning a game the team was held together under the tutelage of master coach Glenn Young and morale and team spirit remained high. A pleasure to be involved with, you don’t have to win to have a good time (helps, but). Little League Majors- Jamie Knuckey did it again! They said they were gone, 2-0 down after 3 of 7 innings playing in front of a hostile crowd away from home and he rallied the little men for perhaps the finest moment of his junior coaching career to bring home the bacon. The boys as they get older will savour this win and hopefully remember just how good it was. I’ve been involved in a few and this one rates very highly. Much of the credit goes as well to the highly organised team manager Jayme Bennetts who was the perfect foil to the coach. If you reckon you haven’t got any spare time talk to this bloke. The Little League Minors Sturt and Saints both had fantastic seasons. Sturt led by Mark Abfalter and Brett Schenk brought home the bacon to win the pennant by percentage over Saints led by Stuart Crutchley and Dave Stewart. Dave’s reports were straight out the Chicago Tribune. Brilliant I can’t speak highly enough of all of these guys dealing effectively with all the issues that arose. From the individuals point of view there were a few outstanding personal achievements –

Matthew Macbeth won the league rookie of the year. Technically he’s a junior.

I would like to thank all the parents and Sturt players that umpired, scored and helped out at both training and game day over the season. Without parents and current and past players helping out and supporting we would not have enjoyed anywhere near the success that we had. Paul Mildren rolled on with his popular Masterclass. A big thank you to Ron Macbeth who continues to inspire another generation of players with his “chats” and advice. Still doing the hard yards - made the trip down to Southern Districts to present the premiership trophy to the Sturt U12’s when he could have been watching his grandson play in his grand final at Sturt. Thanks for another excellent season Mr Mac. Sensational! Thanks to my predecessor Dean Franke for allowing me to drink at his fountain of knowledge and our President Phil Robinson who continues to do a mammoth job well. Season 2011/12 was so much fun I think we’ll do it all again. Go Sturt!

Under 18 Report 2011-2012. Our Under 18’s finished the minor round in 4th place with a 10-6-1 record (including four 1 run losses) We beat Golden Grove 13-6 in the first week of the finals and went down 1-0 to East Torrens in the second week.

Our squad saw a few changes through the year with some players being called up to the seniors and four or five very capable Under 16’s filling in at times (thanks boys!) We saw some marked improvement in our players as the season progressed. We were 5-5-1 at the Christmas break, and 5-1 after. These young men are displaying some very sound attributes and many of them will go on to have great careers with the Sturt Baseball Club. Mark Hutton slotted into the vital role of pitching coach for the season and had a terrific impact on our boys. Shaun Wright, Matt Franke and Sam Roberts had some great outings on the mound, with Mark playing a significant part in their development. Let’s hope Mark continues his involvement with juniors at Sturt for many years to come.

Thanks to our manager, Peter Duffield, who did a fantastic job with the off-field running of the team, and wife Janine for scoring for most of the season. Thanks also to parents who helped out, our tireless groundsman, David Lee, umpires and our President and the committee.

Under 16/1 Sturt Report 2011-2012. The U16 Div 1 team finished 4th on the ladder after the home and away series. 11 wins 5 loses and 1 draw, we scored 189 runs for and had 91 against. Averaging 11 runs per game and giving up 5 runs per game. We had a successful season finishing one week off the grand final. Losing the qualifying final to the only team we hadn’t beaten all year and our long time rival West Torrens. West Torrens went on to win the championship. The season started a bit slow losing a few games we probably shouldn’t. After the completion of round 9 and half way through the season we were 4 wins 4 loses and 1 draw and some may say we were not playing to our potential. But the boys turned things around and finished the second half of the season with 7 wins and 1 lose. This turnaround was credit to the hard work and commitment the boys put into training and the new found intensity during game time. We started to have fun again with our baseball. Even though we didn’t make the grand final this year in my opinion Sturt U16’s had the most talented list of all clubs. The most even side across the board batting right throw the line up. All the boys had the ability to play all positions and we were never short on pitchers. Pre-Christmas we struggled to get the full squad on the track due to state commitments but after Christmas our training picked up and we started to mould as a tough team to beat. We were well represented in the state teams Max Walker, Max Guehrer, Shaun Wright all represented the U16 state team and Errol Burns was selected as a reserve. Jordan McArdle represented the U14 State team well done boys you have all represented SBC at the highest level. The rest of the team has also represented State in previous years. So as you can see this side is full of talent and with the right frame of mind and commitment can achieve anything they choose in life whether it be baseball or any other interest in life. Special mention to Tyson Hancock; Tyson came to Sturt this year from Goodwood and fitted in well. Tyson started the season in div 2 but quickly move into our top side, starting as pitcher most games for Div 1 and finishing with a strike rate of 60%. Tyson was unlucky to miss out on a trophy. Max Guehrer took out the MVP voted by the parents. Max deserved this trophy and always pushed himself to be a good ball player and team mate. Max was outstanding with the bat in the final series and led the side well. Jordan McArdle took out the Batting Trophy with a batting percentage of 537. This was a great achievement for Jordan as he was still eligible to play U14’s. Henry Brennan was awarded the “Most Consistent Award”. Henry was our quite achiever he never made a big scene always did the little thing, would play anywhere with no complaints and held down the number 3 batting spot all year. Henry batted 500 for the year coming runner up to batting average. Josh Deegan we nominated Josh Tindall, I noticed after the fact that Josh was nominated last year as well. Josh work real hard on his baseball. He played many positions and was our utility man filling in the gaps. He never complained that he didn’t have a spot of his own. Josh is the ultimate team man always ready to help out his team mates and coaches with anything he can do. Josh is a hard worker and pleasure to have in the team. I was well supported this year; Rick Trembath assisted me with coaching the side. Rick did all the tough jobs like throwing batting practise at trainings and game warm up, running ball pens anything needed to improve the side. He was always positive and a great example to the

boys. Ditmar Guehrer was our team Manager and all off field jobs were taken care off. Thanks guys for your support and help including many phone conversations we would have during our busy work schedules.

Thanks to Jo Trembath, Trish Guehrer, Karen Tindall and Nicole McArdle for scoring the games. Thanks heaps, the girls managed this themselves each week without being asked. Karen also helped manage the side when Ditmar was away and Trish also did all the team stats.

To all the parents and Grandparents we can’t achieve team goals without your support. Thanks for all the help with pitch counts, ground set up, getting the boys to training on time and general cheering on Sundays. We always had plenty of support on game day.

Finally big thanks to the Sturt committee for running a great club, John McClure your support was always there. Tony Catt for mentoring me over the phone on many occasions, well done with our senior squad. David Lee for preparing an awesome ground week in week out, this is not easy when you consider the traffic this ground has and cheers mate for working around our trainings on so many occasions. To the girl behind the bar, you guys have made our club a better place. GO SAINTERS

Kris McArdle. Under 16/1 Sturt Coach. 2011-2012.

Under 16/1 Saints Report 2011-2012. After a 'busy' pre-season we kicked things off with four grading games to determine which teams played in Division 1 or Division 2. A 1 win-3 loss result landed us in Division 2 which is where I felt we belonged being a team of first year Under 16s. There was a core group of eight players which included, Tyler Duchene, Tom Bartley, Damon Gray, Daniel Ortiz, William Hill, Fraser Crameri, Angus Read and Matt Amberg.

For the first half of the season we rotated pitchers from the Division 1 side and it soon became apparent we would be competitive but did reveal the team was inexperienced in numerous key areas. Hitting and scoring runs was our strength but defensively we allowed too many runs against.

After Christmas we were joined permanently by Ryan Cross, Sam Cavanagh and Sam Powell which gave us some depth and stability. The boys had some terrific moments and showed a great deal of resilience winning a number of games in the late innings.

For the Division 2 season we only lost three games but two of these were thumping's from Kensington who we would later meet in the finals at the end of the minor round (which included the first four games). We finished in second place with a 9-6-1 record. Our first final against Port Adelaide was played in difficult windy conditions and despite battling hard all the way we went down 8-5. This set up a preliminary final against our nemesis Kensington. It was a memorable game with the lead changing five times until we won it in the bottom of the seventh! It proved to be the high watermark of our season and was one of the great team efforts I have witnessed as a coach.

The Grand Final on the other hand was a struggle for us right from the start, with some early bad luck and the extra pressure seemed to take its toll and we never got properly into gear. To Port Adelaide's credit they handled the moment and played a competitive game to be deserving Premiers, with their team of second year Under 16s giving them the edge in size and experience and reinforced to me that a year's development in junior baseball makes a significant difference.

It was a season to be proud of and one that I hope has helped in the development of these young players. I wish to thank my Manager Simon Gray who was an enormous help, my scorers Maureen Rischmueller and Rosslyn Cross, first base coach Andy Amberg, and pitch counters Howard Duchene and Bernard Hill.

A big thank you to Peter Turner for umpiring, and his help at training, plus Trevor Hendry and Darren French for umpiring. Finally thank you to Kris McArdle, Ron Macbeth and John McClure for their contributions.

Glen McDonald. Under 16/1 Saints Coach. 2011-2012.

Under 14/1 Sturt Report 2011-2012.

Team members: Simon Adkins, Zach Lunnon, Mitchell Lightbody, Brodie Macbeth, Tyson Ottaway, Stuart Brennan, Zach Evreniadis, Arno Norrito, Ryack Parsons, Max Staggs and Henry Wood.

The U14 Div 1 team had an outstanding season, finishing the minor round in 1st place and taking out the minor premiership again. We dominated the minor round with 15 wins, 0 loses and a draw 201 runs for and 41 against. This team in the last two seasons has only lost 2 games and they were both unfortunately the penultimate games.

Up until the Christmas break we endeavoured to play the players in a variety of positions before settling them into more stable /suitable positions after the break. We made it clear, and agreed as a group that when we returned our goal was to do everything we could to try to win a premiership for our great club. This seemed to work very well and I am sure the players and their parents enjoyed, understood and agreed with our goal, while we still needed to make sure we were having fun as well. There were several areas of our game that in the early part of the season were disappointing, but to the boys credit they improved in all areas as I requested. Training an extra night with about six weeks of the normal season remaining made a huge difference to the players’ skill levels. One night concentrating on skills and plays and the other was concentrating on hitting. Thanks must go Don Wulff and Jeff Nicholas for taking the time out to pass on their knowledge. I believe teams should train two nights a week if possible to become more dominant.

We had a tight contest against West Torrens in the first final coming out winners 9-5. This was an important game for us, as this secured the home final run. We then convincingly beat Southern Districts 18-2 at Sturt to set up another Grand final opportunity. We started off the Grand Final well poorly and were chasing our tails for all the game. The players fought back well to get back within one run but then the flood gates

open with West Torrens scoring 7 runs to lead 12-4. To the players’ credit, they showed grit and scored 7 runs to 1 in the last 3 and ½ innings and eventually going down 11-13.

We have all learnt from the experience and will be better coaches and players for it. The improvements the boys made as players and the fine team spirit they developed during the season was great to be a part of. Every player had a role in the success of the team, and the level of improvement in all players was very encouraging. We had a team batting average of .449 and 3 players averaging in the 500’s, 3 players in 400’s and the rest in the 300’s. The pitchers worked hard, with most getting their first pitch strike rate to around 60%. I would also like to thank all the parents, families, friends and sponsors who supported the team in so many ways throughout the season. We were very fortunate to have parents and friends who were so supportive of the boys.

The team had great support throughout the year, and thanks go to Barry Lunnon (The Pitching Machine Lunnon) as Assistant Coach. Barry’s knowledge of the game and calm character is a blessing to have next to me in game situations and at training, our wonderful scorers Trudy Evreniadis, Julie Macbeth, our manager extraordinaire David Lightbody and the senior players that helped out with specialist coaching on training nights. I would like to thank everyone who helped during the season with the many roles that existed each week. Particularly to Craig Ottaway for his umpiring, Richard Staggs and Garry Parsons for their help with setting up the ground, Debbie Norrito for pitch counting each week thank you!

The award recipients this year were; MVP – Brodie Macbeth, Most Consistent – Mitchell Lightbody and Coaches Award – Simon Adkins. David Lightbody was nominated for the Josh Deegan Award.

Brodie Macbeth, Mitchell Lightbody and Stuart Brennan were all selected in the SA Bite under 14 State Team, which competed in WA earlier this year, and finished a creditable 4th. Zach Lunnon, Simon Adkins, Stuart Brennan, Mitchell Lightbody, Henry Wood, Brodie Macbeth all represented Australia at the Asia Pacific Little League playoffs as members of Southern Adelaide All Stars in Guam in July 2011. This team has again produced 6 representative players out of 11. All the best to the players who are going up to U16s, and for those still in U14s next season, enjoy your baseball, and I hope that what you have learnt and experienced this year will stay with you for a very long time to come. Finally, I would also like to thank Glenn and Janet Young, David Lee (for the wonderful ground that we played on during the season) and our Junior Co-ordinator John McClure and the whole baseball club committee, thanks for all your help and support.

Under 14/1 Saints Report 2011-2012. Team: Stewart Gardiner, Ethan Egglestone, Connor McClure, Cameron Young, Nikolai Sas, Jamie Last, Marcel Tugwell, Elijah Randell, Brandon Weber, Ty Langford, Jack Bennetts, Riley Mills. Coach: Glenn Young Manager: John McClure Having decided to have two division one teams the Saints as the more inexperienced team always knew it would be a tough season. If you believe the saying that you learn more from a loss than a win then we had a very educational season. As a team we played competitive defensive baseball, with our team of pitchers (Stu, Nik, Connor, Jack and Ethan), generally well supported by the field. Our main problem was that we could not string enough hits together to put offensive pressure on the opposition and score enough runs to be competitive. This aside, there were many positives from this season: Our performance in the second half of the season being vastly better than during the first round of games emphasised the improvements in the boy’s skills. The boys played well as a team and were very supportive of each other throughout the season. At no stage did they drop their heads or give up. We had FUN. Despite the lack of results on the board the boys always turned up cheerfully to training and games and were always willing to play whatever position asked of them. As usual there are many people to thank. First and foremost a huge thank-you to John for his tireless work as team manager and for his help with training and game day. The ability to run my ideas and thoughts past him was greatly appreciated. To Janet for scoring and to Jo for filling in when Janet was unavailable. Brett‘s umpiring skills were greatly appreciated. To Bill, Craig and Alex for game day setup and all those who helped in the myriad of ways that made my season easier. Finally my awards: MVP – Stewart Gardiner. Stuart had a terrific season on the mound, in the field and with the bat. He was a leader on and off the field. A well deserved award. Runner up MVP – Nik Sas. Nik was my go-to man when we need a pitcher to throw strikes and get us back in the game. Nik’s understanding of baseball and his great temperament will take him far. Best team man – This was a difficult choice between two players, with one just edging out his competitor. I have given the award to Jamie Last but would like to acknowledge both Jamie and Ethan Egglestone, who demonstrated all the characteristics a coach could desire in a player. They consistently played at high standard, always gave 100% and were willing to play wherever they were placed. Their attitude was exemplary and they always showed leadership and support for their team at training and on game day. Ethan’s selection to sit on the bench for Gary’s team in the Finals Series was just reward for his great efforts this year. I would like to thank the boys for the enjoyment of coaching them this year and wish them all the best in the future.

Little League Major League South – Sturt Report 2011-2012. The Squad After a successful 2010-2011 season and 3 premiership players remaining in U12/1 Coach Knuckey set about building a new squad for 2011-2012. After tryouts a group of 10 boys were selected for “Majors”. Squad – Samuel Bennetts, Matan Cohen, Hugo Dahlen-Flight, Eli Egglestone, Ky Hampton, Tyrese Kimotho, Harrison Knuckey, Austin McClure, Thomas O’Connell, and Reed Stewart. While a number of boys selected in 12/2’s were unlucky to miss the Majors team Coach Knuckey was confident he had a squad able to defend the premiership. We approached the season with an idea to try and play the boys in regular positions to allow them to become more confident with the skills required in their positions. Catchers – Reed and Eli, Infield – Sam, Harry, Tom, Ky, Hugo, and Reed, Outfield – Aussie, Matan, Tyrese, Eli. All except one pitched on multiple occasions across the season, meaning that come finals, we had incredible depth available to us – with the frontline being Harry, Tom, Hugo, Ky, and Aussie. The Season The season started well with big wins against Goodwood (23-1) then Glenelg (16-2). We struggled against Adelaide scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth to escape with a 12-10 win. Two more big wins at West Torrens (18-2) and Souths II (19-2) set up a top of the table clash with Southern Districts and a 2-11 loss. This was followed up with a 12-12 draw at Kensington. While some of the boys were playing well individually, this game highlighted the group were not a team at this point and certainly not playing for each other. Collectively the boys were an exceptional talent but not playing as a team and willing to support each other was a problem. After wins against Goodwood (21-4), Glenelg (12-9), and then a draw at Adelaide (8-8), after another final innings rally (maximum 5 runs in bottom 6th), we went to the Christmas break with 7 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws to be in 2nd position on the ladder. Encouraged by the ability of the squad to come from behind twice, and the boys starting to “gel” together, we went undefeated through 5 games in 2012 (including 4-3 against Southern Districts in a rain effected game) to finish equal top (12 wins – 1 loss – 2 draws) with Southern ///districts (13-2), but second on percentage. Finals began with a trek to Southern Districts for 1st vs 2nd. While the boys played well Souths played better, and we returned

home to face Adelaide for the right to play Southern Districts again. The game was tight early, but the win was ours - now to face Souths in the grand final on their home deck. Grand Final The boys arrived early and seemed relaxed. We watched some of the 12/2’s game and then chatted about the strengths of team play and needing an even performance from all players. In to the game, and after 3 innings we were down 0-2 with the luck certainly going Southern Districts way. This time the boys kept their heads up, stayed positive, and played for each other. They kept swinging the bat hard and remained solid in the field behind some excellent pitching by Harry then Thomas. The luck turned – innings 4, 5 and 6 saw 4 runs, then 3, then max 5, to be up 12-2 after top 6. Bottom 6 saw the boys hold their nerve, and get the outs after 3 runs scored. The final score 12-5, and a win by the mercy rule. PREMIERS!! While everyone played well a special effort from Aussie (4 from 4 including 2 doubles) and some excellent fielding, Harry (42 strikes in 64 pitches, 2 runs, 4 innings), and closed out by Thomas (19 strikes from 40, 3 runs, 2 innings). Solid work from Eli behind the plate, and with the bat. All of the boys had a hit, and there were no K’s. The boys “clicked” as a team on the biggest occasion of the season, and showed each other the importance of being a team – well done boys. Special Mentions - Team The team had an on base percentage of .680 for the regular season and scored 198 runs in 15 games. 3 boys had OBP above .800 (Samuel, Harry, and Thomas) and Matan above .700. Hugo (.667), Eli (.585), Ky (.667), Tyrese (.467), Aussie (.608), and Reed (.607). While at times everyone hit well, Harry and Thomas had multiple hits most games (Harry OBP .839 with only 7 walks for the season from 56 plate appearances, Thomas .867 with 5 walks, 30 plate appearances). Harrison – an outstanding season pitching, with the bat, and in the field resulting in winning the league MVP award. Congratulations and well done. Harrison, Thomas, and Ky – selected for the Southern All-Stars Little League team. Good luck. Eli and Reed – outstanding efforts behind the plate for the whole season. Special Mentions – Support Lyn – for scoring almost every game and making the managers job easy by being available. John, Dave, and Vicky for helping out. Brett – umpiring most of our home games. Thanks. Vicky, Michelle, Gail – helping out with the pitch counts. John, Lochie – for helping keep the boys organized, set up, and assistance at training. All Parents – Thanks for supporting the boys and allowing the coaching staff to do the best they could. While we may not have always got it right, and occasionally were caught in the emotion of the game ourselves, your support and positive advice was helpful – thanks to all.

Closing Thanks to all the boys. You have grown as individuals and as group over the season. Keep listening and practicing what your coach asks – believe in yourself and your ability – play with and for your teammates. Best of luck to those moving to U14’s and hope to see you all at Sturt next year.

Little League Minor League South – Sturt Report 2011-2012.

Team members:

Jordan Abfalter, Axel Andrews, Andrew Brennan, Robbie Brennan, Tom Emmett, Jonathon Gamble, Jonathon Gransden, Alex Martin, Owen Moseby, Elliot Ridgway, Kurt Schenk, Zak Short Awards: MVP – Robbie Brennan, Best Utility – Tom Emmett, Coaches Award – Elliot Ridgway Josh Deegan Nominee – Robbie Brennan Special mention and congratulations to Robbie Brennan who was voted MVP for our League, closely followed by Tom Emmett who finished in the Top 5. We started the 2011/2012 season with a squad of 9 boys, and this was increased by two by the start of our first game. About half of the players had come up through the Sturt Tee-Ball program, and a few had played in the minor league during the previous season, so from the coaching department we were starting with a fairly ‘green’ but ‘keen’ and enthusiastic group of new baseballers. Our expectations were very open from the start with the emphasis on basic skills and confidence building, working as a team and hopefully string a few wins together with the outcome being enjoyment for all! Our season was divided into two halves. The first half was really trying to get all the players to ‘attack’ when at bat as the reality was that for most of the boys, they hadn’t faced a pitched ball during a game before. The other focus was getting everyone to ‘gel’ as a team on the field. Generally, all players fielded the ball well for their age, but they played too much as individuals, hence – we focused on developing their confidence in the batting box, and getting the fielding to work in a team style where every player ‘owned’ their position. Easier said than done… Our first half of the season started strongly, which helped set the stage for the remainder. We quickly found a core group of pitchers – Elliot, Robbie, Tom & Zak, all of whom were very consistent and reliable. This enabled us to concentrate on the weaker areas of our game

and consequently batting was where most of the coaching work was required early on. By about the fifth game, we had 5 wins and the players were not only more confident but were starting to look at their own techniques, and improvements were just around the corner. We headed into Christmas with 9 wins and 1 loss against the other equally strong and capable Sturt team, a quickly developing pitching department with a number of other players ready to step up to the plate, and a satisfying batting average that was also growing with every game. At this point we had exceeded our expectations, and all players had produced much more than we had asked. Our first game back against a much weaker Southern Districts, proved a valuable ‘wake-up’ game as the boys had returned from the break with probably a little too much confidence, and we ended up losing an easy game that should have been a ‘walkover’. With the addition of Axel Andrews and Alex Martin, we now had a squad of twelve, so managing the list was presenting a few selection challenges, whilst maintaining a focus on developing the squad and giving everyone a fair go. Players that put their hand up to pitch and play other positions were given opportunities and quickly realised the challenge was quite high at this level. By the season’s end, we had only dropped a handful of games, our batting was on fire with strong contributions from all at most games, our fieldwork was gelling like robots, our pitching department was without peer in the league and importantly all the boys had smiles on their faces. We reached a peak against West Torrens and followed up against Glenelg with a great team effort from all; no-one could stop us. We have many highlights and strengths to reflect upon - who could forget Axel’s ‘awesome’ catch at rightfield, Tom’s weekly ‘circus’ catches behind the plate, the super smooth Elliot opening on the mound, Robbie’s Mr. Reliable at first, Jordan’s ‘fastballs’ and strikeouts, the clean plays from Kurt and his backup pitching when called upon, Andrew’s slingshots with the bat, Zak’s efforts as an all-rounder, Jono’s Alex’s and Owen’s rapid improvement over the season with the bat, and Jonathan’s work at shortstop when we needed him. At season's end, all of the boys can not only be proud of the outcome of the season but for the effort they have put in all year. They have all improved immensely both in their basic skills and in their understanding of baseball. It has been a pleasure to work with them and to enjoy their company. Well done to all of the boys, a shield result is no mean feat, you should all be proud of what you have achieved and importantly use it to build upon for years to come. The team’s results for the season and the individual performances are without doubt due to the collective input of quite a few people that made all the difference. We have been very lucky to have a group of supportive and enthusiastic parents. To our Team Manager/Assistant Coach/Umpire - Brett Schenk, sincerely thanks for your efforts, reliability & commitment over the whole season, I couldn’t have asked any more from you. We also benefitted greatly from the input, training assistance, support with base coaching on game days and umpiring from Tim Ridgway, Brian Emmett, Phil Gamble & Phil Martin – many thanks. To our scorers Jo Gamble, Linda Brennan and Lynda Schenk, your very professional score

recording every week made it very easy for me to track the progress of each player and their efforts. It is one of those thankless jobs every week that all three were ready to help at every game. To all the other parents we appreciate all the things you have done for your boys and in helping us as coaches. It has been a terrific season with some great results and much development from the boys, we hope we will see you all back next year.

Little League Minor League South – Saints Report 2011-2012. The 2011-12 version of the Sturt LL2 Saints completed a long and successful season in mid-March. The team set out at the start of the year to achieve three key goals: 1) Having fun; 2) Learning the fundamentals of the game and increasing the players’ baseball nous; and 3) Laying the foundation to contribute to a winning club culture. I believe each of these objectives were achieved to varying degrees in a way that will set the boys up for future baseball success and enjoyment. The Saints put together a 14-4 season record with the run differential in the four losses totalling only nine runs. With no finals played at this level, the Saints tied the LL2 Sturt boys for the LL South Ron Chandler League title. With a 2-0 head-to-head record against Sturt during the season, the Sainters earned the right to feel proud of their team accomplishments in 2011-12.

The mound held many question marks at the start of the campaign. The Saints started the season with six first time players and little overall pitching experience. Sam, Josh, Aran and DJ stepped up and carried the bulk of the pitching early in the season to great effect. When given the opportunity after Christmas Nick, Patrick and Cooper emerged to turn in consistently solid performances on the hill, and provide quality pitching depth I believe is unmatched at this level. Hitting was an area that lived up to its potential during the year and saw notable development of numerous players adjusting to live pitching. Several skilled former Sturt Tee-Ball All Stars joined one year veterans DJ, Ollie, Aran and Cooper to establish a formidable top to bottom line-up. An occasional lack of consistency and timely hitting cost the team a couple victories during the year, but the boys’ ability to put the ball into play made for entertaining games much of the time. DJ, Nick, Josh and Patrick comprised the Saints version of Murders’ Row with Sam, Ollie and Aran regularly setting the table for the boomers that followed. Bailey, Cooper and Mitch were the most noticeably improved batters over the course of the season and delivered timely hits and walks to contribute to the team’s success. The fielding displayed by this group was generally of a high standard, with the physical aspect being the easy part, and the concentration and awareness proving to be a regular challenge. Ollie was a workhorse behind the plate, with contributions from Patrick, Sam, Aran and Josh. Congratulations to Coaches Award winners Nick Borrello, Sam Stewart and Josh Wilson. Nick Borrello was also a worthy nominee for the Josh Deegan Award, for the respect he has earned from his teammates and coaches, and his consistently great effort and sportsmanship on the diamond. Thanks to Dave Stewart for serving as Team Manager, Lyn Carman for scoring the majority of our games, and to those who umpired throughout the season. Special thanks to John McClure for his efforts as Junior Coordinator, and making the youngest Saints feel an important part of the club. Thanks to all of the parents for supporting the boys all season long. Team members: Nick Borrello, Oliver Crutchley, Mitch Foley, Cooper Gilbert, Patrick Milewski, Dayton Mitchell, Baily Passmore Duthy, Sam Stewart, Josh Wilson, Aran Wittert. Sturt T-Ball Report 2011-2012. The 2011/12 season saw the amalgamation of the Sturt T-ball Club with Sturt Baseball Club, along with the change to a Friday night competition at the Sturt Baseball Grounds. The season was played over 16 rounds with 6 teams competing in the T-ball competition for Under 8’s and 4 teams in the Rookie Ball competition for the Under 11 age group. The T-ball competition adopted the Aussie T-ball format developed by the ABF, which provided improved participation for all players, and was more suited to the younger age group. A regular strong turn-out demonstrated the enthusiasm and commitment of the youngest Sturt players. Rookie Ball was played in a coach pitch format, providing an improved transition to baseball which was quickly mastered by all participants. Over 20 schools were represented amongst the 85 players, providing significant scope for increased participation over the coming seasons. Generally mild weather provided ideal playing conditions with the exception of 2 cancelled rounds, one each due to wet and hot weather. The balmy evenings proved popular for parents and supporters to enjoy the weekly barbeque and refreshments on offer. During the second half of the season, 2 scheduled Rookie Ball rounds were replaced with skills training supported by a number of senior coaches and players. The sessions provided immediate and significant improvement to the skills of the players, and proved invaluable to the performance of the All-stars Team. It is recommended that these training sessions are also undertaken for the T-ballers next season, along with increased support for all coaches to improve consistency across the games. The All-stars team coached by Laura Stranger and Lynda Schenck played 3 rounds against Kensington, West Torrens and Southern Districts. The representative team played well against all teams, ultimately missing out on the trophy by one game to Kensington. Unfortunately, the Sturt round was cancelled on the morning of the game due to forecast hot weather. MVP for each carnival round for the Sturt Team were Robbie Brennan, Kurt Schenk and Finn Stranger. At the completion of the All-stars rounds, 6 players from each team were selected based on overall performance to play a demonstration game arranged by the ABF as the curtain raiser to the North versus South Little League baseball carnival. Played on a perfect autumn evening under lights at West Beach, the game and comradeship was enjoyed by all. Unfortunately, the combined Kensington/West Torrens Team proved too strong for the Sturt/Southern Districts team on the night. A Special General Meeting of the Sturt T-ball Club towards the end of the season supported the amalgamation of the baseball and T-ball clubs. All equipment and assets have now been transferred to the Sturt Baseball Club.

The successful season and amalgamation with the baseball club would not have been possible without the valued support of the coaches and team managers, committee members and bar staff. Thanks also to our generous sponsor, Windsor Meats for providing sausages for all rounds.

BASEBALL IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA AND THE STURT BASEBALL CLUB.

The history of baseball in Australia dates from 1888 when an American professional team toured South Australia, and as a result both junior and senior teams were formed here. The first interstate match was played in 1889 between South Australia and Victoria before a crowd of 5,000 spectators. The game was played at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The Sturt Baseball Club was one of the earliest Baseball Clubs formed in South Australia (Goodwood the first), being formed in 1908. The first home for Sturt was a site in the South Parklands. The original Clubhouse was an 8m square green galvanised iron shed, on the site now occupied by the Adelaide Pavilion, on the corner of South Terrace, adjacent to the tram lines and Pultney Street. The following details were recorded in The Advertiser of 24/04/08.

* A practice match was played on the South Parklands on Saturday Afternoon between the Goodwood and Sturt teams. The form displayed by the old players showed that they had not forgotten the grand old game of baseball, and the performance of the new members was creditable. The result Goodwood 12 d Sturt 7. * On the 8th. June, Adelaide and Goodwood combined to defeat the Norwood and Sturt Combination 24 - 15 in a special exhibition match. * Goodwood were known as the Black and Whites or Magpies, Norwood as the Red Legs, Sturt as the Blues , and Adelaide as the City Nine. Prominent players from 1908 were R. Ewers, E. Ewers, and WAD. Price, A. Dope, O. Laurent, Fred Warne and W. Brown. Prominent names from the 1929 season were P. Hutton, A. V. Thomas and A. J. Bartlett.

The Sturt Baseball Club moved to it’s present home at Norman Reserve in 1961. In season 2008/2009 Sturt Baseball Club celebrated it’s Centenary, one of the many events staged to mark this significant event was a Centenary Dinner held at the Adelaide Pavilion, a venue very close to where the old green shed stood in the South Parklands. The occasion saw the launching of the Sturt Baseball Club Hall of Fame. Twenty one individuals representing all eras of the Club from 1908 to the present day were inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Gala event. The sell out event saw ex-Sturt players travel from all parts of Australia to re-unite in celebration of the Centenary. A special Centenary uniform was commissioned for the senior playing squad, and was proudly worn by the Division 1 and Division 2 players during the season. Season 2009/2010 saw the Sturt Baseball Club commence a new era; the second century of it’s existence, with new and exciting young players to carry the Club forward. Season 2011/2012 the club enjoys one of it’s most successful seasons in the club’s history with a record high number of teams both Junior and Senior playing in final series. The club is in negotiation with the Mitcham Council to renew the lease for Norman Reserve, the club’s home of 51 years, to ensure a permanent base for the Sturt Baseball Club.
