Štúrovo Štúrovo is a small town in South Slovakia, it

lies on the Slovak – Hungarian border line where the rivers Danube and Garam flow.

It is a prehistoric settlement which had a few different names in the course of its history. In the Roman era its name was Anavum, then in the Middle Ages they gave it the name Kakath, the memory of which we cherish in the arms of our town. The Turks occupied Buda, the capital city of that time, in 1541, and thus our town came under the rule of the Turks. They called the town Dzsigerdelen. On 9 October 1683 Sobieski, a Polish general together with his army relieved this whole area from under the 142 year reign of the Turks.

In 1939 many Polish refugees found a home in our town.Unfortunatelly, after the WW II Hungary lost much of his territory. Thus our town as many other places became a part of Czechoslovakia, later Slovakia. Our town is bilingual up to now, where 80 % of the population is Hungarian. Still we form a minority in Slovakia. The name of the town now is Štúrovo.
