DESIGNING AN EARTHQUAKE

RESISTANT HOTEL BEYOND

CONVENTIONAL BOUNDARIES

DHARMA SAYS:

Minimum corners.

Minimum voids.

Symmetry and regularity.

Minimum projections.

Avoid re-entrant corners.

STAIRCASE1. SEPARATED STAIRCASE One end

of the staircase rests on a wall and the other end is carried by columns and beams which have no connection with the floors.

2. BUILT IN STAIRCASE - When stairs are built monolithically with floors, they can be protected against damage by providing rigid walls at the stair opening.

3. STAIRCASE WITH SLIDING JOINTS- In case it is not possible to provide rigid walls around stair openings for built-in staircase or to adopt the separated staircases, the staircases shall have sliding joints so that they will not act as diagonal bracing.

MATERIALS

UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN

“EARTHQUAKE PROOF MATERIALS” TO USE FOR BUILDING.

HOWEVER, FEW MATERIALS CAN RESIST OR REDUCE THE

IMPACT OF SHOCKS IF USED SMARTLY.

FEW OF THOSE MATERIALS ARE –

1. Fibre Reinforced Polymer (F.R.P)

2. Ductile Hybrid Fibre Reinforced

3. High Strength Steel.

4. Wooden Frames

5. Rubber Foundation

6. Polymer Bars

7. Base Isolation Pads

8. Fibre Reinforced Concrete (F.R.C)

Page 15: Stupa

Techniques USE DIAGONAL BRACES THAT ABSORB

THE ENERGY FROM THE SHAKE.

BASE ISOLATION- SHOCK ABSORBERS

MADE OF RUBBER TO LET THE BUILDING

MOVE UP TO HALF A METRE IN ANY

DIRECTION DURING EARTHQUAKES.

VISCOUS DAMPERS- THE ENERGY IS

ABSORBED BY THE VISCOUS FLUID

WHICH PASSES THROUGH THE PISTON.

FRICTION DAMPERS- THE ENERGY IS

ABSORBED FROM THE FRICTION OF THE

TWO SURFACES RUBBING AGAINST EACH

OTHER.
