Introduction : For these last two months I have been working at a company that manufactures mattresses. While there I have been tasked with observing the different manufacturing sections and making recommendations on how each section can be improved. I have so far studied two sections in the company: the Quilting and Tapedge section. My reports may include a fair amount of mattress-speak so feel free to contact me if you need any clarifications. But a mattress is primarily composed of its: core, top and surrounding. The mattresses’ core can be made of steel, foam, or a mixture of the two depending on the type of mattress. The top and surrounding are a mixture of foam and fabric, and are known as the panel and border respectively. (1) For my first study, I studied a section in the manufacturing plant known as the Quilting section. The Quilting machine produces the border and panel of a mattress by combining foam and fabric and imprinting a pattern onto the mixture of both.
