The Brussels-Capital Region has set itself a goal of mobility exemplariness. It consists of reducing car traffic by 20% to improve air quality, travel efficiency and urban conviviality. To this end, several measures have been decided to encourage alternative mobility: • The multiplication of pedestrian zones • The development of dedicated tram and bus lanes • The use of hybrid buses and the conversion of the bus fleet to 100% electric by 2030 • The increase of the cycling infrastructures to move towards fully dedicated cycling lanes • The modernization and extension of the metro network • deliver modern real time mobility information, to assist all users in their daily commutes • The rationalization of car traffic thanks to a better management of parking, a larger protection of residential areas, low emission zone, the support of rational use of the car by promoting innovative uses such as car- sharing or collective taxi • A third-party payment mechanism at the federal level, with the allocation of public subsidies to all companies that finance 80% of the cost of SNCB + STIB subscriptions for their employees. Consequently, 100% of the subscriptions cost is covered for workers using public transport The approval of the new Regional Mobility Scheme, planned for 2018, will give the signal for the development of the new Municipal Mobility Plans. The latter will have to translate, at the local level, the regional policies on mobility. The MMP will take spatial planning into account. Facts & Figures: The Brussels public transport company (STIB) serves 30 urban communities and ensures the daily transport of a population of 1.1 million inhabitants. 401 million trips were made in 2017. The Brussels-Capital Region has set itself a goal of mobility exemplariness.
It consists of reducing car traffic by 20% to improve air quality, travel efficiency and urban conviviality.
To this end, several measures have been decided to encourage alternative mobility:
• The multiplication of pedestrian zones • The development of dedicated tram and bus lanes • The use of hybrid buses and the conversion of the bus fleet to 100% electric by 2030 • The increase of the cycling infrastructures to move towards fully dedicated cycling lanes • The modernization and extension of the metro network • deliver modern real time mobility information, to assist all users in their daily commutes • The rationalization of car traffic thanks to a better management of parking, a larger protection of residential
areas, low emission zone, the support of rational use of the car by promoting innovative uses such as car-sharing or collective taxi
• A third-party payment mechanism at the federal level, with the allocation of public subsidies to all companies that finance 80% of the cost of SNCB + STIB subscriptions for their employees. Consequently, 100% of the subscriptions cost is covered for workers using public transport
The approval of the new Regional Mobility Scheme, planned for 2018, will give the signal for the development of the new Municipal Mobility Plans.
