Study on International Politics in Contemporary China

1 Chapter 1 International Politics Studies in China Li Shaojun Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP) Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing, China A state plays a political role first and foremost in international relations. In this regard, international politics is the interactions of states in the political role, while International Politics (IP) study refers to the theoretical research of such interactions. It is natural for any individual state in the international system to conduct such research for better commu- nication with other states; but such research does not necessarily mean the establishment of the discipline of international politics. Four factors are required. The first is the construction of IP major and degree programs in institutes of higher learning. The second is having IP research institutions. The third is publishing IP journals. The last one requires systematic theoretical research. The first three can be regarded as the hardware to a discipline, while the fourth serves as its software. The scientific nature of a discipline will always be embodied in its theoretical work. The development of IP studies and disciplinary construction in China has included both the establishment of an institutional system and theoretical research.
