Angewandte – history
The University of Applied Arts Vienna was founded in 1867, initially called ‘Kunstgewerbeschule des österreichischen Museums für Kunst und Industrie’ (Arts and Crafts School of the Austrian Museum for Art and Industry). In the 1890s, the School established the Viennese Modern Age together with Secession movement artists such as Koloman Moser, Otto Wagner, Oskar Kokoschka, and Gustav Klimt. During the era of National Socialism, our institution was, like so many others, af fect ed by the repression, expulsion and exploitation brought about by the total - itarian regime. After the Second World War, the academic staff was rejuvenated by appointing renowned artists.
In the 1990s, Austrian art schools were transformed into universities, since 2002 acting as fully independent legal entities. The Angewandte has extensively been using the new possibilities from then on:
• The range of study options including diploma pro grammes in Architecture, Fine Arts and Media Arts, Design, Conser va- tion and Restoration, as well as Art Education was continuously expanded by introducing a number of bachelor and master pro grammes, aiming to connect and exceed existing disciplines in order to tackle the grand challenges of our society.
• In artistic research, the University gained a leading position in Austria as well as international recognition, mainly due to a large number of projects funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the PhD programme in Art.
• A broad range of international exhibitions and symposia, Biennale contributions, projects for sustainable development, and manifold activities in the Angewandte
Innovation Lab (AIL) allow the Angewandte to strategically shape societal discourses by giving cross-disciplinary impulses from the arts, humanities and science.
As a prerequisite for these developments, two major new buildings have been acquired in close vicinity to the main building: The open architecture at Vordere Zollamtsstraße 7 (VZA7) offers a multi-purpose audito rium and atrium. In spring 2020, the Angewandte was able to rent additional space in the ‘Postsparkasse’ building designed by Otto Wagner, which makes this iconic build - ing accessible again not only for univer sity members but also for the public.
Angewandte – today About 1,700 students from almost 70
nations take part in degree and non-degree programmes. The broad spectrum of artistic disciplines, complemented by a large number of scientific subjects, certainly enriches the special atmosphere that prevails at the Angewandte. The university as a place for critical reflection on one’s own thoughts and actions, a place where questions are more important than patent solutions – thisconceptflourishesat the Angewandte. Studies are not limited to the mere conveyance of artistic techniques and skills. Rather, the development of individual artistic creativity and critical re flec-tion upon one’s work on the basis of theories and concepts are our foremost priorities.
Students learn and experience art not as an end in itself, but essentially as a starting point and medium for communi-cation, with the aspiration to change society. Encouraging the development of creative visions in respect of global

chal lenges while committing to technical andconceptualbrilliance – thesearethe basic elements of the quality standard the Angewandte sets for both teaching staff and students.
The Angewandte sees itself as a place of free artistic and academic expression, as a forum for open debate and as a labora-tory for artistic visions designated to unfold their potential in the society of the future. Our endeavour to remain one of the best art schools in the world is inextri-cably linked to the ongoing work of con-sistently enhancing our quality standards, the constant renewal of creative poten -tial and our uncompromising dedication to artistic and academic freedom.
