Product Knowledge: Chapter 1: Siding Module 1: Vinyl and Metal Siding Vinyl Siding • Vinyl siding is made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). • The top strip on the siding has nail slots and it installs over housewrap or house paper. • It is easy to clean and maintain. • The face of vinyl siding is available in a variety of custom colors, which vary with the manufacturer. • The double panel style has two laps per panel. Other styles are available with more laps per panel. It is available in 4” or 5” widths. • The single panel style has a single lap per panel, and is available in 8” widths. Vertical Panel • A vertical panel may be installed vertically or used as a soffit trim. • Styles include V-groove and board and batten. • It is available in smooth and wood-grain finish. • Soffit trim is installed under the eave or overhang of the roof or on porch ceilings. • Panels to be used for soffit trim may have perforations that serve as a vent for the eave of the roof. Corner Post • The corner post can be an inside or outside style. • It is used to trim the corners and provides a place for siding panels to snap. Trim • Trim is also known as an undersill trim. • It is used to hold the top of siding, especially if it is cut. • J-channel type trim is used to hold siding around windows and other places where a run of a siding panel ends.
