Week 6 581758 Wanzhen Ma

Activity One: ‘WORKSHOP EXERCISE’

We were asked to make a beam with 2 different type wood materials. Oneof them is a thin plywood board andthe other is pine.

We top-nailed the plywood board using square-headed cut nails

We fixed short pine in the above plywood board

When our beam was under force…….

The first crack appeared on the top pine wood.

Then the sheets and the bottom timber cracked as well.The cracks on the sheets are different to shoes on pine wood,because of the internal shear forces.

It was interesting that the bottom timber wasn’t cracked in the middle were force applied,instead it crackedalong the wood knot
