Share this: Greetings From the Dean I recently arrived at the Institute full of excitement and eagerness to serve as your Dean of the School of Nursing. During my brief tenure here, I have listened to our very bright students, interacted with a committed faculty, and met alumni who take pride in being a graduate of the IHP. I have great administrative colleagues and I’m eager to work collaboratively with them to explore innovative programs, and develop new initiatives and partnerships. I have been pleased with the warm reception and welcome to Boston and the Institute. As we look toward the future of nursing education, we need to be mindful of the changes occurring in health care. Health care is undergoing a phenomenal transformation. Millions of Americans are now insured as a result of the Affordable Care Act and require access to health care. There is a new look at the costs and benefits of health care, which in its current state continues to be a drain on our economy. New models of health care reimbursement are being dictated by major payers and regulatory agencies. We are shifting our health care goals from illness and inpatient treatment of disease processes to wellness and preventative care in primary care and community settings. We are concerned about the health of populations and the need to have healthy communities is requiring a shift from an individual patient model to groups and communities that experience health disparities. The changes in health care require us to examine our curricula and program goals. Such changes require our graduates to enter the workforce with a core of nursing knowledge and professional competencies at the generalist and advanced practice level with greater emphases on technology, informatics, interprofessional education, leadership, ethics, health policy and finance, and population health. Our students must have access to best practices in clinical education, engagement in our communities, participation in interprofessional education, and be exposed to simulation and other forms of technology. Our students must develop their Birthing Manikin in the News Assistant Professor Mimi Pomerleau holds the newborn from Victoria, the birthing manikin the Institute recently acquired. The School of Nursing's use of this high- fidelity manikin was covered recently in Boston Business Journal and Boston Magazin e. leadership skills, be culturally sensitive, and remaincompassionate when delivering care. We face these challenges in health care asopportunities. I look forward to working collaborativelywith colleagues at the Institute and our clinical partnersto build quality nursing education programs thatconsider these health care trends. Our scholarly work indiscovery, teaching and learning, and application donewith other disciplines will strengthen the patient careexperience. Our graduates will provide quality and safecare to individual, families, and communities in a widerange of settings. As always, we appreciate the supportof the IHP community. Palan Lopez Named AAN Fellow

School of Nursing Professor Ruth Palan Lopez hasbeen named the Institute’s eighth American Academy ofNursing Fellow. She was cited for her efforts indeveloping innovative ways to care for people withdementia who are nearing end of life.

A delegation of faculty from Yancheng Institute ofHealth Sciences in China visited the Institute, meetingfaculty who teach Global Health Nursing courses andtouring the school’s facilities.

Faculty Receive IHP Fellowships

Professor Janice Goodman received a ChangingCourse Teaching Fellowship for her project“Development, Implementation, and Evaluation ofOSCEs in Psychiatric Mental Health Advanced PracticeCourses.” She is working with Instructor Susan Stevensand Associate Professor Patricia Reidy, who also is theproject’s mentor. Assistant Professor John Wong, who works in theFatigue Research Lab, received a Faculty ResearchFellowship Award for his project “Regulation of IL-1βProduction by Mcl-1.”

Mass General Ranked #1 Hospital

Massachusetts General Hospital – which founded theMGH Institute in 1977 – is now ranked the Number 1hospital in the country, according to the annual“America’s Best Hospitals” survey by U.S. News &World Report.

Five School of Nursing alumni were among dozenslisted in Boston Globe’s annual Salute to Nursessection, published in recognition of National NursesWeek which runs May 6-13.
