Dear Students, As I was reading the article written by a student on “Followers and Leaders” (page 66), I couldn’t refrain from sharing my thoughts on the matter.Though I like and agree with most of the article, somehow there are few things that I felt I needed to comment on.“Followers have to be obedient”. I don’t know about you, but the word obedience has a lot of negative connotations to me.Actually “followers” and “leaders” are words that I refuse to use.How can we divide the great array of human thoughts and behaviors into these two simple, categorical categories!?Aren’t we all followers and leaders simultaneously, everyday?And can we not change our words to view matters a bit differently?How about using words such as pro-active, go-getters and doers? These are attributes that should be shared by both followers and leaders.The only difference between a follower and a leader in my opinion is; one has paid his dues already while the other is still paying. One is ready to take upon him/herself the responsibilities of others, while the others are preparing themselves for greater responsibilities.I always tell my team, we have no followers at PH7, each person is a leader. First you lead yourself to maximize your potential, then you inspire others around you to do the same, and we all work towards realizing the same vision. It is not a vision that one leader has imposed on the rest, but a vision that the whole team has brewed together and agreed upon and became part of.I view the word as circular rather than hierarchical and if you still insist on believing in power, then think of yourself as a link in the circle, deriving power from those on your right only to give power to those on your left. And the ultimate power remains when you close your eyes and say, today, I feel content with what I have achieved.

شخص قادر أن يوجه إنتقاد �ن احلكم على تصرف معني أو موقف ما يكون نابع من موقف ما سبقه وهكذا دواليك.

أما إذا كان ا�نتقاد سلبي فهو إحراج، حيث أصبحت ا�خ�ة صفة شائعة � ·تمعاتنا. رمبا هناك أشخاص يسببون لك ا�حراج من دون قصد بسبب عدم تفك�هم املسبق ملا يودون

احلديث عنه، وهناك أشخاص يتعمدون إحراجك و� هذه احلالة يجب أن تعتمد مبدأ "ا�بتسامة بوجه عدوك تفقده لذة ا�نتصار".

لذلك إذا كنت ممن يوجهون ا�نتقاد فيجب أن يكون حكمك لÂمور بشكل منصف وليس ·رد كالم، أما إذا كنت ممن يسببون ا�حراج فأنصحك بأن تعيد حساباتك �نه كما تدين تدان.

و� النهاية الَ تنتقد والَ حترج حى ال ُتنتقد وال ُتحرج.

منذ ثمانية أشهر قدم أحد زمالئي فكرة املشاركة مع Toast Masters، وهو عبارة عن منظمة عاملية تقدم برنامج تدريبي للشباب من Êتلف ا�عمار واجلنسيات يساهم � تنمية

مهارات اخلطابة والتواصل مع الناس والتي تساعد على كسبهم ثقة بأنفسهم.

كيف يساهم هذا ال½نامج بتنمية هذه املهارات؟

ينقسم العمل مع املنظمة من خالل نوادي تضم كل منها ·موعة من ا�شخاص، و� كل إجتماع يتطلب مهمات من كل فرد مهمة معينة وهذا يساهم � خلق الثقة بالنفس وتخفيف

ا�رتباك وتشجيع الشخص على إبداء رأيه بكل ثقة خاصة عند وجود حلقات نقاشية.

هل شاركت � أعمال مماثلة � السابق؟

خالل أيام املدرسة شاركت مع لوياك عام 2005-2006 � الÒنامج الصيفي كمتدرب، � كل من بيتزا هت و كاسكو.

ما هي ال½امج التي تقوم بالعمل بها؟

نحن نعمل بشكل 40 نادي منفصل، ويتم ا�جتماع مرة أو مرتني � ا�سبوع على حسب كل نادي، ونقوم بالتدريبات على مهارات متنوعة، وخالل ا�جتماع يتم ممارسة الÒنامج بني أعضاء

النادي الواحد وتبادل اخلÒات والتعرف بشكل أكÒ على أهمية التواصل واخلطاب.

ما هي اخلطوات املستقبلية التي تسعوون القيام بها؟

نحن كأعضاء متطوعني � Toast Masters، نحاول بقدر ا�مكان جذب فئة الشباب للتطوع مع هذا الÒنامج ونشر وعي التخاطب واحلوار نظرÔ للدور الذي يلعبه � التحدث بشكل إيجابي وإدارة النقاشات بطريقة حضارية، كما أنها تساعد الشباب با�نخراط بشكل أكÒ � اجملتمع

على الشخص الراغب با�نضمام أن يعي أهمية هذا الÒنامج، وعن الشروط ا�دارية تتمثل أن يكون فوق سن الثامنة عشر ويتم دفع مبلغ رمزي هو 3 دنان�.

فهي تشتثمر معظم أوقات فراغها � العمل التطوعي ملساعدة العمالة الوافدة � الكويت فضًال عن رحالتها التطوعية خارج الكويت � غانا وتايالند.

ما هو سبب مشاركتك � ا�عمال التطوعية؟

تتمثل معرفة القيمة احلقيقية للعمل التطوعي عندما يشارك الفرد � أي منها حيث يشعر مبعاناة اàخرين ومشاكلهم و� نفس الوقت يشعر بقيمة احلياة التي يعيشها ويبتعد عن

التذمر. وعلى صعيد شخصي عندما كنت � املدرسة شاركت برحلة تطوعية إ� تايالند �عادة âيتام. إال أن مشاركتي � ا�عمال التطوعية بدأت بشكل رسمي عند دخوÂبناء مبنى خاص ل

املرحلة اجلامعية إال إن السبب خلف ذلك هو تقدمي الدعم املعنوي قبل املادي لÂشخاص .äبصرف النظر عن العرق أو اللون أو اجلنسية ولكن من منطلق إنسا ßاحملتاجني � العا

وما هي النشاطات التي تقومني بها � اجلامعة ا�م�كية؟

منذ دخوâ اجلامعة ا�م�كية شاركت مع اجلهة اخلاصة خلدمة اجملتمع وتطوعت � عدد من ا�نشطة، ومن ثم شاركت مع جمعية Operation Hope وهي جمعية أسستها شارون م�زا

تهدف إ� مساعدة العمالة الوافدة � الكويت.

ما هي أبرز النشاطات التي قمتم بتنظيمها مع Operation Hope؟

قمنا بحملة تÒعات للعمالة الوافدة � الكويت ونظمنا زيارات إ� السفارات � الكويت منها السيالنية والفليبيينة، فضًال عن نشاطات متنوعة ومتت دعوة أبناء اجلاليات ومنها سحوبات

وتوزيع هدايا ومالبس وغ�ها من املستلزمات ا�ساسية.

كيف يتم تنظيم النشاطات مع Operation Hope؟

يجتمع جيمع أعضاء اجلمعية يوم السبت � منزل شارون م�زا بهدف التخطيط للنشاطات التي نسعى إ� تنظيمها. فضًال عن جمع املالبس التي حصلنا عليها وإختيار اجليد منها وتنظيفها

بهدف بيعها بسعر رمزي جدÔ والتÒع با�موال التي نحصل عليها للمحتاجني مرتني � السنة.

إنسانية يفرضها اجملتمع وما هي النشاطات التي شاركت بها � اجلامعة ا�م�كية؟

مؤخرا قمنا بتكرمي عمال النظافة واحلراسة � اجلامعة بالتزامن مع يوم العمال العاملي ، لذلك قررنا تبادل ا�دوار معهم مبشاركة عدد من الطلبة حيث سمحت ا�دارة لهم بإرتداء لبس عادي بالوقت الذي قمنا بإرتداء مالبس عمال النظافة واحلراسة وقمنا بتنظيف احلرم اجلامعي ووزعنا

عليهم الهدايا.

ماذا عن رحتلك التطوعية إÆ غانا؟

شارك � هذه الرحلة عدد من طلبة وطالبات اجلامعة، و� عشرة أيام � غانا واجهتنا ظروف صعبة منها عدم وجود املاء وال الكهرباء وال حتى طعام كا� للمجموعة، فضًال عن وجود حياة

معيشية صعبة � قرية بأكملها سواء من ناحية العيش � أكواخ وإنتشار ا�مراض والفقر. قمنا بÛميم مدرسة ومساعدة الشعب احملتاج بقدر ا�مكان ولو سمحت â الظروف سأكرر التجربة.

ما هي مشاريعك املستقبلية؟

� شهر أغسطس القادم سأشارك مع اجلامعة ا�م�كية مع 7 طلبة لرحلة إ� الفليبني .ßللمشاركة � مؤمتر خاص بالشؤون ا�نسانية مبشاركة عدد كب� من الدول حول العا

ترفض الطالبة منى حمد، تخصص إدارة أعمال فكرة برامج تلفزيون الواقع �ن هذه

الÒامج تؤثر بشكل كب� على حياة الشخص العادي خاصة أنه سيتعرض للشهرة بني

الناس. وتضيف "تعتمد برامج تلفزيون الواقع على إظهار شخصية املشاركني بشكل كب�

مما تؤدي إ� إنتقادات سلبية من قبل املتلقي ومن املمكن أن تؤثر على حياته وتسبب له

مشاكل � مواجهة اجملتمع � وقت الحق".

وتوافقها � الرأي الطالبة أنوار حمد تخصص إدارة أعمال وتقول "اجملتمع الكويتي

واخلليجي بشكل عام يرفض فكرة املشاركة � برامج تلفزيون الواقع �نها تتخطى كل

احلدود �ن الشروط تتطلب ذلك". وتابعت من الصعب أن أشارك � برامج التي تتطلب إظهار كل ما أقوم به � حياتي اليومية أمام

العاß العربي وإن كنت أملك موهبة وأرغب بإظهارها.

أما الطالبة بدور العنزي تخصص إدارة أعمال تقول أن املشاركة � برامج تلفزيون الواقع

ال تعود على اجملتمع بالفائدة خاصة أن معظمها تتطرأ إ� حياة املشاه� اليومية

أو برامج ترفيهية للغناء أو املواهب وا�خرى،

منذ أك· من 13 عامÌ إنتشرت برامج تلفزيون الواقع � الدول الغربية، وهو عبارة عن برنامج يضم عدد من الناس الذين لديهم صفة مش�كة لتحقيق هدف معني حتت مكان واحد ويتم تسجيل حياتهم وردود أفعالهم الطبيعية مع عدم وجود نص مكتوب ويتم عرضة مباشرة للمشاهدين الذين يتابعون

حياتهم وتصرفاتهم وردود أفعالهم. وعلى الرغم من أن هذه ال½امج يعت½ها الكث�ون تخطي للخطوط إال أنها إنتشرت مؤخرÖ � الدول العربية وحتقق نسبة مشاهدة عالية، لكن كيف تقييم الطالبات � الكويت برامج تلفزيون الواقع وهل ممكن أن يشاركن بها بالرغم من تعديها � بعض ا�حيان

للخطوط احلمراء؟

أول برنامج لتلفزيون الواقع عرض �

العاß كان عام 1973 � الواليات املتحدة

ا�م�كية واسمه "العائلة ا�مريكية"،

وتناول مواضيع ÷رمة � اجملتمع آنذاك.

ولكن أول برنامج مماثل ملا ما هو

موجودة حاليø على الشاشات العاملية كان

" سي. أو. بي. اس." الذي انطلق � مارس

عام 1989 على قناة "ا�م. تي. �".

وتقول "من لديه هدف أو طموح يجب أن يعتمد على نفسه ويستخدم أساليب أبعيدا

عن برامج تلفزيون الواقع �ظهارها للمجتمع وإثبات نفسه."

وتعتÒ الطالبة ألني أسطوريان تخصص تصميم داخلي أن الÒامج التلفزيونية التي

تتطلب عرض حلياة ا�نسان الشخصية واليومية هي برامج جتارية بإمتياز، وتقول "ال

أرغب بأن يشاركني الناس بحياتي الشخصية أو أتعرض لúنتقادات التي قد تكون مؤذية �

بعض ا�حيان".

تخطي اخلطوط احلمراء وإقتحام اخلصوصية طالبات اجلامعات يتحفظن على برامج تلفزيون الواقع

وهذا ما أكدت عليه الطالبة نهى رحال تخصص تصميم داخلي أن تلفزيون الواقع يفرض التطرق إ� أمور شخصية قد تكون

حساسة وليس من حق أي أحد التعرف عليها لذلك فاملشاركة � مثل هذه الÒامج قد يؤدي إ� نتائج عكسية بالنسبة للمشÛكني وتؤثر على حياتهم � ما بعد بشكل سلبي

وليس إيجابي.

أما الطالبة شروق بسيسو تخصص تصميم داخلي تش� إ� أن تأيديها أو رفضها �ي من

برامج التلفزيون الواقعية تعتمد بشكل كب� على مضمون الÒنامج، وتقول "بعض من الÒامج الواقعية ال هدف لها سوى كسب

عدد أكÒ من املشاهدين لتحقيق الربح املادي. إال أن إذا كان هناك برامج تتعلق

بالتصميم الداخلي وتساعد على تنمية بعض املهارات وإكتساب اخلÒات فأنا أؤيدها

لكن بشرط أال تتطرق بشكل كب� إ� احلياة الشخصية".

وبدورها تؤيد الطالبة أوضاع برامج تلفزيون الواقع �نها تعتÒها فرصة للتعرف إ� ناس

جدد وإكتساب خÒات ومهارات جديدة بشرط أن تكون تابعة لصرح تعليمي مثل

الكلية، وتقول "على الرغم من أنني أؤيد برامج تلفزيون الواقع إال أنها يجب أن ال

تتخطى حدود معينة مثل احلياة الشخصية أو العائلية بل يجب أن تعتمد بشكل كب� على

الهدف من الÒنامج لتعزيز وتنمية املواهب فقط."

أما الطالبة رواء العنزي تخصص تكنولوجيا معلومات ترفض بشدة فكرة برامج تلفزيون

الواقع، وتقول " تتطلب برامج تلفزيون الواقع ا�ختالط بني املشÛكني والتعدي

على خصوصيتهم والتي قد تؤدي إ� نتائج سلبية."

Fadalah said, Cozi stands out from the rest immediately when you walk into the restaurant. As the name suggests, you walk into Cozi and you walk into a comfort. The décor of the restaurant is a compliment to the food you order. The concept of their sandwiches starts with their stone oven that is visible to the customer. Daily they bake their signature bread (either white or brown) from scratch, which allows the stone oven to infuse true flavor of baked goodness into every bite. However, the fresh sandwiches don’t stop once they bake the bread. Upon order they grill the meat of choice in front of the customer. Take the popular Cozi Bana sandwich for example, the customer selects their chicken breast of choice which is then grilled perfectly and topped with sliced turkey, also grilled. AN OUTSTANDING DENTISTRY DEPARTMENT AT NOOR CLINIC DR. DIVYA VISWANATH:BRUSH YOUR TEETH HALF AN HOUR ATFER EATING

Dr. Divya Viswanath, an Orthodontist at Noor Clinic, sat with us to give us a better understanding of orthodontics and what it is exactly. We became better informed with this specialty of dentistry and we are going to share what we learned with you. This is what Dr. Divya had to say to STUDENTALK.

Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of irregularly placed teeth,, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both. Orthodontic treatment focuses on dental correction as well as control and modification of facial growth. Severe malocclusion may also impair function. Orthodontic treatment can be carried out for purely esthetic reasons and to improve function. Normally the treatment can be started when the child is 12 or 13 years old when the permanent teeth have erupted. However in cases where growth modification has to be done, or the child has habits such as thumb sucking, treatment is started earlier. The first step in treatment includes clinical examination, study models, X-rays, and photographs. Based on these data the doctor makes a treatment plan, which will be discussed with the patient. The treatment duration may be one to two years depending on the severity of the problem. The visits are scheduled once in a month. Good oral hygiene is essential throughout the treatment; lack of it may result in tooth decay and problems related to the gums. Special tooth brushes and mouth rinses can be used during the treatment. Braces have evolved considerably in the last few years. Nowadays low profile metal or clear brackets are being used which is a lot more comfortable. Then there are the self-ligating brackets which do not need elastics to hold the wire.

They are smaller and do not raise off the teeth as high as conventional braces, which makes them less noticeable. These smart braces are available in clear or ceramic for a more subtle look. With the advent of esthetic brackets lot of adults are seeking orthodontic treatment. Age is not a concern as long as the teeth have good bone support and healthy gums. Other advancements are lingual orthodontics where the braces are placed on the inner surface of the teeth and Invisalign where the patient wears a series of custom-made clear aligners. But it can be done for selected cases only. Wearing retainers after the completion of treatment is equally important to hold the teeth in the corrected positions. There are fixed and removable retainers. The time period required for retention will depend upon the original malocclusion. We could not let Dr. Divya leave without asking what she thought was the most common problems in Kuwait. Through what she has seen, it is cross bites (when the upper teeth are placed behind the lower) and the terminology for it in dentistry is Class III malocclusion. Another problem is crowding, it is when the space is deficient for the teeth to be aligned. And of course we had to ask about toothpaste, and the best to use are toothpastes that contain fluoride because it helps to prevent tooth decay. Adding that you should NOT brush immediately after eating food which are acidic in nature and citrus fruit juices to prevent enamel erosion. Wait half an hour this way you get the maximum benefit from brushing.

Some people just seem to be born a natural leader or a person who follows while others develop these characteristics from their environment and life experiences. While most people consider it better to be a leader, being a follower can also be rewarding. It is up to you to choose, but you need some information about both characteristics in order to make a proper decision.

Without followers, no one can be considered a leader. A leader rises to the position from their followers enthusiasm. Followers are actually the most essential part of leadership because without followers the leader can’t lead. As a result, a good leader carefully considers their followers needs. A leader is often viewed as a person of authority, while followers are considered to have little rank or status within the group. When examining history, the best leaders have been individuals who do not threaten or harm their followers. Former United States President, Eisenhower, once said, “beating people over the head isn’t leadership.” The problem is, leaders need to understand their followers better.

Science is beginning to show that some people are born leaders. The traits associated with being a

leader are, an outgoing personality, a desire to dominate conversations and events, and a high level of intelligence. However, other people develop into leaders due to environmental conditions. Sometimes the most adverse situations create leadership qualities in individuals and sometimes just being raised by a leader causes a child to develop the same characteristics. While most parents push their children to be leaders, followers are equally important in the social scheme of life. Many of the same qualities that make a leader also make an excellent follower. Followers are known as having a low rank, less power and influence. Followers are known to abide others in order to maintain a good relationship with their leader. What most people don’t understand is that if you want to be an impacting leader, you must first be a great follower. If you think back to

history’s worst leaders, you can also see that they never learned to follow. The result? They made their own followers miserable. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer:It is hardest when you deny your fear. There is nothing wrong with being scared of something, it’s natural to be scared. Even the strongest men have something to fear. Like all the greatest men did, turn your fear into motivation; this will help you achieve the best instead of the worst.

Know your fear:What is the root of your fear? Has it always been a part of you? Answer these questions for a start then you will be able to understand your fear. You can even write them on a piece of paper.

Curl up:Decide that you want it more than you are afraid of it. In this step you need to look into the desired outcome. For instance, if you’re afraid of bungee jumping allow yourself to feel the pleasure, refresh yourself with the feeling of that adventure.

Observe:Observe people doing the thing that you can’t do, because of your fear. Watch the joy and allow it to enter your heart, and stop your fear from growing, so that you are able to overcome it easily.

Try it: Try to fake it till you make it. With the help of your friends try to set yourself free. Ignore what you fear and give it a try. Seek comfort from the people; know that they have your back no matter what.

Turn a blind eye:Try not to think about what you fear. How do you feel know, knowing that you are fearless? It is simple to ignore something for a little while, till you are able to bear it.

Do it:Push yourself to get through the experience, as much as you can. The more you try the better. You will notice that you get closer to your goal every time you do it, because you will be breaking more and more of your fear.

Concentrate on the path, not the obstacles:There are mountains everywhere and sometimes you need to climb them. Fears are only there to divert you from the right direction. If you overcome your fear you will stay on the right track.

Reward yourself:This last tip may be the most important; it’s what will make you want to go on to the next step and enjoy its trouble.
