1. Historical connections between Romania and France

• French-Romanian relations are bilateral foreign relations between France and Romania. Diplomatic relations between the two countries date back to 1396.

• Currently France has an embassy in Bucharest and three honorary consulates (in Craiova, Constanţa and Brașov). Romania has an embassy in Paris, three consulates-general (in Lyon, Marseille and Strasbourg) and four honorary consulates (in Nantes, Bordeaux, Nice and Brest).

• Both countries are full members of NATO and of the European Union. Since 1993, Romania is a member in the Francophonie.

1. Historical connections between Romania and France

• 1396, Jean de Nevers, son of the Bourgogne duke, fight against Turkish army to help the Prince Valachie Mircea the old.

• XVII and XVIII century : lots of relationships between both nations

• After the first world war, the cooperation increases with Titulescu, minister of foreign affairs.

• France has backed up Romania to allow its entrance in OTAN and UE

• Today, France is the first country to invest in Romania

2. Historical connections between Romania and Italy

• Italy has an embassy in Bucharest, a general consulate in Timişoara, and 4 honorary consulates (in Cluj-Napoca, Constanţa, Craiova and Piatra Neamţ).

• Romania has an embassy in Rome, a general consulate in Milan and 3 honorary consulate (in Florence, Genoa and Treviso).

• Both countries are full members of the Latin Union, of NATO and of the European Union.

• There are around 750,000 to 1,000,000 people of Romanian descent living in Italy.

• Romanian is taught as a foreign language in various tertiary institutions, mostly in European countries such as Germany, France and Italy, as well as the Netherlands.

3. Historical connections betweenRomania and the Netherlands

• The Netherlands has an embassy in Bucharest and an honorary consulate in Timişoara.

• Romania has an embassy in The Hague and three honorary consulates (in Amsterdam, Leidschendam and Sint-Michielsgestel).

• Both countries are full members of NATO and of the European Union.

• Romanian is taught as a foreign language in various tertiary institutions, mostly in European countries such as Germany, France and Italy, as well as the Netherlands.

4. Historical connections between Romania and Hungary

• Hungarian-Romanian relations are foreign relations between Hungary and Romania. Relations between the two states date back from the Middle Ages. Both countries established diplomatic relations in 1920.

• Hungary has an embassy in Bucharest, 3 general consulates (in Cluj-Napoca, Miercurea-Ciuc and Constanţa) and 2 honorary consulates (in Constanţa and Iaşi).

• Romania has an embassy in Budapest and two general consulates (in Gyula and Szeged). The two countries share 443 km of common border. Both are full members of NATO and of the European Union.

• Romania has developed strong relations with Hungary, with the latter playing a key role in supporting Romania's bid to join the EU. Romania's ethnic Hungarian party also participated in all the government coalitions between 1996 and 2008 and from 2009. In 1996, Romania signed and ratified a basic bilateral treaty with Hungary that settled outstanding disagreements, laying the foundation for closer, more cooperative relations.

5. Historical connections between Romania and Turkey

• Romania has an embassy in Ankara and two consulates-general in Istanbul and İzmir. Turkey has an embassy in Bucharest and a consulate-general in Constanţa. Both countries are full members of the BLACKSEAFOR and BSEC.

• Romania and Turkey have a long tradition of strong economic and commercial ties that have steadilydeveloped at a rapid pace during the recent years.
