Spring, 2020
Dear Student and Parents/Guardian,
Welcome to Bronx Science. We want to make your adjustment to your new school as smooth as
possible so we have arranged a special day for you on June 4, 2020. On this day, New York City
public schools will be closed for students. If you attend public school, you will have the day off. You
can spend the day at Bronx Science. We expect the day to start at 9AM and stay no later than 2:30PM.
More details will follow.
If you attend a private or parochial school, and if you are able take the day off, you will be able to
participate. If you cannot attend, a future date will be determined for you to take the placement test(s).
However, it would be best for you to attend on June 4th if at all possible.
In early June you will receive a letter containing your logon information for your Bronx Science email.
Please logon immediately. You will receive important information about June 4th including where to
report.
On that day you can expect to:
• Take an optional honors science placement exam and/or Math Team
• Meet your new classmates, see clubs and sports, meet some current students, teachers
and administrators.
• Take your ID card photograph
INCOMING SOPHOMORES – Please bring in a copy of your high school transcript and your latest
report card on June 4th. You will be meeting with staff members who will help ensure that you are
programmed properly for September.
If you have any questions about this day or anything at all, please feel free to contact Cynthia Golan, our
Parent Coordinator at (718) 817-7712 and [email protected]. She is the primary liaison between the
school and the parent community and is happy to answer all questions and concerns that you may have.
You may also contact the assistant principals of the various academic departments or me. All our contact
information can be found later in the packet.
Sincerely,
Ms. Phoebe Cooper

April 2020
Dear Student,
Welcome and congratulations on having been accepted to The Bronx High School of Science! We hope
you will be joining our Bronx Science family this September.
In this packet, you will find information about the academic program at Bronx Science. We are also
asking you to provide us with information about yourself so that we can place you in the best classes
for you.
Please check out our Bronx Science website, www.bxscience.edu, where you will find our course
guide, which describes the wide variety of classes we offer. You will also find information on the many
extracurricular activities that we sponsor. Be sure to read this – the breadth of our offerings may
surprise you! At our Open House, you have an opportunity to meet with some of our faculty and
students, and hear first hand about the Bronx Science experience.
We offer you a broad based academic program. Our curriculum emphasizes science and related subjects
such as technology, engineering, and mathematics, and we offer a wide variety of classes including
advanced electives and opportunities for independent research in these areas – but students also have
extensive opportunities for advanced study in the Humanities, and choose from a wide variety of
advanced placement and elective courses in English, Social Studies, and World Language. Art, Music,
and Physical Education courses to round out the curriculum. Students can also receive extra help or
enrichment from teachers of their classes during time set aside for this each day. Students’ experiences
are enriched through their participation in extracurricular activities such as our Speech & Debate team,
drama program, newspaper and other student publications, robotics team, and numerous clubs and
sports teams. Many of these activities are recognized as award-winning and outstanding at the national
level. Our student body is diverse, tolerant, and welcoming, and Bronx Science is a place where you
will learn much from your peers and make life-long friends.
We want to provide you with the best possible education and guidance in a safe and nurturing
environment, and prepare you to succeed in college, in your careers, and to make a positive difference
in the world. Being a successful Bronx Science student requires motivation and consistent hard work,
but the payoff is worth it. We look forward to meeting and working with you, and having you become
part of the Bronx Science family.
Sincerely,
Jean M. Donahue, Ph.D.
Principal and Bronx Science ‘77

A MESSAGE FROM THE PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION
April 2, 2020
Dear Parents:
Welcome to The Bronx High School of Science, and congratulations on your child’s admission to our school!
This packet will give you loads of information about Bronx Science and why it is special. As copresidents of
the Bronx Science Parents’ Association, we also want you to know what it means to be a Bronx Science
parent. We are a large and diverse group, speaking a variety of languages and living in all five boroughs. The
Bronx Science administration and the PA work together to make sure that parents always feel connected to the
school, and part of the Bronx Science community.
Bronx Science parents are kept well informed of what’s happening at school. Here’s how:
1. Every Sunday, the PA sends parents an informative e-blast. These e-blasts are archived on our PA website,
bxsciencepa.org, so parents can always have easy access to important information. 2. Every Friday, our unparalleled Parent Coordinator, Cindy Golan, sends out a very detailed email to students
and parents. So even when you don’t have a particularly communicative child, you will still know what is
happening at school. 3. The Bronx Science Guidance Department sends out a bi-weekly email to students and parents with student
employment opportunities, scholarship information, notification of relevant academic and arts competitions,
and college and financial aid information. 4. Your student’s grades and assignments are posted on an online portal called PupilPath, so you can always
know what is going on in class. 5. The PA meets once a month at 7:00 pm at the school. Each monthly meeting focuses on a specific topic that
is of interest to our parent body. Refreshments are served and the dates of all the meetings will be sent to you
in September. 6. There is a monthly Coffee with the Principal at 8:30 am at the school for parents who cannot attend evening
meetings or who are simply hungry for more information 7. Additionally, there is a school-wide phone alert system that is used for emergency alerts (which are very
rare!), and for meeting notifications and reminders.
If your child chooses to attend Bronx Science, we hope that you will get involved. We invite you to visit our
website, bxsciencepa.org, where you’ll find a lot of information that will help to paint the picture of what your
life might be like as a Bronx Science parent. Feel free to email us directly with questions,
[email protected], You and your child are in for an exciting four years!
Best Regards, Rebecca Barreras and Lisa Brody Parents’
