ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) is an academic discipline concerned
with making systems more efficient. Often this goal is achieved through the use of modeling
and other computational methods.
Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) at IIT Bombay offers research-based
M. Tech., Ph.D., and M.Sc.-Ph.D. dual degree programmes, and is actively involved in research
(including sponsored projects), consulting and continuing education. The discipline offers a
blend of theory, modeling, and application, drawing from traditional as well as modern areas
of operations research, together with a systems view derived from long-standing principles of
industrial engineering. This approach provides a backdrop for technically sound decisions at
operational and tactical levels and occasionally at the strategic level, for a variety of
organizations.
Established as one of the first interdisciplinary programmes in IIT Bombay, IEOR contributes
significantly to achieve the goals of IIT through various activities such as offering academic
programmes, conducting continuing education programmes (CEP), carrying out research
projects of different types.
The IEOR programme also has steady interaction with a wide spectrum of industries and
sectors of the economy and society through participation in conferences, hosting visitors from
academia and industries, carrying out sponsored projects and placement of students in
different sectors etc.
IEOR graduates work in a variety of research labs and industries, including manufacturing,
communications, transportation, banking, pharmaceuticals, finance, travel, semiconductor,
and business, sports, health, and information technology.

Welcome to Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, IIT Bombay
for your Postgraduate studies. IEOR, IITB is one of its kind in this part of
the world and I am sure that you will immensely benefit from its vibrant
academic atmosphere. Whatever be your undergraduate background, I
can assure you that this place has something to offer, be it modelling of a
wide variety of decision problems arising from technological or
managerial settings, or large scale computations, or theory or insightful
theoretical models for decision making. We wish you an academically fruitful stay culminating
with a launch into a rewarding professional career; we are sure that your stay adequately
prepares you for that.

Hello, Friends!
We hope you are just excited to be a part of IIT Bombay as we are. Hearty congratulations on
this incredible feat! Institute Students Companion Program (ISCP) welcomes you to one of the
most resourceful campuses in India. The next two or three years are going to be the most
memorable, impactful, insightful and life changing years which will fly past. We hope you
imbibe as much as you can and more from your peers, seniors, faculty and staff. Here’s to your
first glimpse of ISCP, the backbone of your journey through the mecca of learning.
ISCP is a program within IIT Bombay Post Graduate (PG) student community. It’s primary
objective is to develop an atmosphere of cordial interaction amongst the PG entrants and the
PG seniors. It will encourage the flow of information, knowledge, and sharing of experiences
among the students.
Life in IIT Bombay can appear a little daunting at times, balancing between the academic
workload and the plethora of extra-curricular activities. And that is where ISCP can help you
blend in and make the most of it. ISCP strives to provide a senior student companion as a
mentor to all newly admitted students. New entrants can contact their assigned companion to
discuss their academic and non-academic issues or concerns. Student Companions enable the
smooth and gentle transition from the graduation days to post-graduation days. New entrants
also feel assured that there is somebody on campus to help them and listen to their concerns.

field. Along with your academics, you will get chance to participate in technical, sports and
cultural activities also. If you are already into some cultural or sports activities, then you will
love it here. If you have not participated in any of the cultural or sports activity and you wish to
start, then you are at right place. Here at IITB, we have plenty of resources to learn and sharpen
your skills in cultural as well as sports. We hope that all of you will represent our department

Be social: Interact with your batch-mates, seniors and faculty members as much as you
need. If you feel that you are facing a problem that is unique and you are the only one
with it, then you cannot be more wrong. Everyone in IEOR family would love to help you

Be informed: Check your GPO, ASC, and MOODLE accounts regularly. You will be
surprised that how many issues can be resolved just by being informed.
Be honest: IITB gives freedom to its students to learn and enjoy their stay, but at the
same time consequences can be severe if you try to bend the rules. Do not cheat in exams
or in assignments. Do not give proxy.

Dear Freshmen,
On behalf of all the Master’s students at IIT Bombay, it is my honor to welcome you all here.
Congratulations on having made it to one of the premier technical institutes of the country.
You are now a part of the IITB PG community and there are an exhaustive number of services
and facilities available to ensure a fruitful educative experience. As post graduate students, you
have already been exposed to university level education. While you will delve deeper into
understanding your area of interest better, I urge you to explore more. There are several student
led bodies on campus focusing on development of skills, sports and extracurricular activities
such as dance, drama, music, etc. Your experience will be what you make of it, and your
opportunities will be limited only by the limits you place on yourself. Utilize the opportunities

IEOR & INDUSTRY
The department of IEOR has had a 25 year long collaboration with the Indian Railways
(IR) with Prof. Narayan Rangaraj having played an instrumental role in establishing
this relationship. He has spent a considerable amount of time in this industry by serving
as a guest faculty at the Railway Staff College (now National Academy of Indian
Railways) in Vadodara where railway officers undergo a formal training, and later at the
Indian Railways Institute of Transportation Management, Lucknow.
“Localization of Solar Energy through Local Assembly, Sale and Usage of 1 Million Solar
Urja Lamps (SoUL)”, initiated by Prof. Jayendran Venkateswaran and Prof.
Chetan Solanki, IIT Bombay aims to empower populations in underserved communities,
through high quality programs that meet their real needs to improve the quality of their
lives. IIT Bombay has received a sanction from the Government of India’s Ministry of
Finance’s National Clean Energy Fund (NCEF) through the Ministry of New and
Renewable Energy (MNRE) for distributing 1 Million solar lamps to several states across
India.
FOSSEE (Free and Open Source Software in Education) is a project that aims at
improvising the quality of education and comes under the National Mission on
Education through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and is funded by
the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India. Prof.
Ashutosh Mahajan contributed to the FOSSEE Optimization Toolbox (FOT) by
providing to the users of Scilab, an interface to several open-source solvers like IPOPT,
CLP, Symphony, CBC and others to solve different types of optimization problems.
Timetabling has been an integral part of Prof. Ashutosh Mahajan’s work here at IIT.
He works on both exam and regular lecture timetabling. Prof. Ashutosh and his students
work along with Prof. Jayendran Venkateswaran and Prof. Narayan Rangaraj
in this endeavor.
The department of IEOR has been collaborating with Mercedes-Benz since 2014 where
students under the guidance of Prof. Narayan Rangaraj and Prof. Manjesh
Hanawal undertook sponsored projects involving the analysis of the performance of
various vehicle components and exploring the field of video analytics.

COURSE STRUCTURE & GRADING POLICY For M.Tech.
IEOR offers M.Tech. Degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. The M.Tech.
Programme is designed to prepare students for professional careers in the area. The academic
programme leading to the M.Tech. Degree involves course-credit requirements and research
work. The duration of the M.Tech. Programme for regular full time students is 2 years. There
is an option of a 3 year part-time M.Tech. for Institute Project staff.
The degree offers a wide choice of courses for the students to choose from. The students are
expected to complete a minimum of 73 course credits. The following is the list of Compulsory
Courses to obtain the degree:
IE 507 Modeling and Computation Lab (5 credits)
IE 601 Optimization Techniques (8 credits)
IE 611 Introduction to Stochastic Models (8 credits)
IE 694 Seminar (4 credits)
HS 791 Communication Skills - I (Not Counted Towards Total Credits) (Pass/Not Pass)
IE 792 Communication Skills - II (Not Counted Towards Total Credits) (Pass/Not Pass)
The remaining 48 course credits must be fulfilled through Electives, as follows:
Minimum of 36 course credits (6 courses) MUST be IE labelled courses (known as core
courses)
Minimum of 6 course credits (1 course) MUST be an Institute Elective (chosen from
among the course list announced by the Institute at the beginning of each semester)
Minimum of 6 course credits (1 course) MUST be from the approved list of electives
(includes IE and other department electives).
Registration of courses NOT on the approved list needs prior approval from the students'
faculty advisor. The final course plan of the student has to be approved by the student's' faculty
advisor.

For the M.Tech. Degree, the student must do 90 credits (48 + 42) of Research Work, which
culminates in an M.Tech. Thesis. Through the research work, the student must exhibit the
ability to think independently and make significant contributions to the field of IEOR.
There are two review stages en-route to the completion of the thesis work, with the second
being the final open presentation. Typically, the Stage I review presentation is held in the end
of 3rd semester (October); and Stage II final review presentation is held at the end of 4th
semester (May-June). The final Thesis Defense will include an external examiner from outside
IITB and an external chairman from outside IEOR.

FOR M.Sc.
The M.Sc.-Ph.D. dual degree in Operations Research is an integrated doctoral programme, for
those interested in a research oriented career. The programme is open for students who have
at least 2 years/4 semesters of Mathematics or Statistics, and are interested in research in
engineering / interdisciplinary areas. The academic programme leading to the M.Sc.-Ph.D.
dual degree involves foundation courses, advanced courses and research work. The candidate
will be awarded both the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees simultaneously on successful completion of
the program.
M.Sc.-Ph.D. coursework includes compulsory & elective courses spread over five semesters.
First year courses are designed to equip students with concepts & paradigms of engineering
and service systems, and provide a strong foundation of the various mathematical &
computational models for decision making. Two lab courses to strengthen computer-based
modeling skills are part of the curriculum.
In the second year, courses on Optimization Techniques, Stochastic Models and other areas
will augment the training in the primary areas of IEOR.
Seminar and Project Work are part of the curriculum to expose students to independent
reading, writing & presentation of technical ideas in a rigorous manner. Several electives are
provided in the curriculum to enable students to specialize in the area of their interest.
As part of Ph.D. requirements, students need to do an IEOR Ph.D. level course and individual
projects before starting work on their Ph.D. thesis.
A minimum of 54 credits are to be fulfilled through Electives, as follows:
Minimum of 24 course credits (4 courses) must be IE labeled course, of which at least 6
credits (1 course) must be an 800-level IE course (Ph.D. level course).
Minimum of 12 course credits (2 course) must be from the Approved List of Electives
(includes IE and other department electives).
Minimum of 6 course credits (1 course) must be an Institute Elective (chosen from the
course list announced by the Institute at the beginning of each semester)

Grading Policy and Important Academic Information
1. A student will be required to discontinue the programme if at the end of any semester
he/she has two or more FR grades.
2. At the end of a given semester, a student must maintain a CPI of 6.00 (computed with
FR, if any, but after reexamination grade if reexamination is permitted). Otherwise,
the student will be required to discontinue the programme. An appeal can be made for
the same. Please see “Rules & Regulations for Masters Programme” from Academics
webpage in detail
3. Certain courses can be opted as ‘Audit’ with due permission taken from the concerned
faculty. The difference between taking a course as audit compared to credit is that it
helps the student to sit through all lectures without having to commit too much time (in
terms of assignments, exams, etc.) to meet the requirements for getting an audit grade
(‘AU’). The requirements for getting an audit grade is decided solely by the professor
offering the course and will typically involve getting a certain pass percentage.
4. Issues concerning slot overlap of registered courses, unavailability of electives, etc.,
should be discussed with respective Faculty Advisor.
5. The academic system in IIT Bombay is based on credits. All students must complete the
required credits for obtaining a degree. The grading scheme is as follows:

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Attendance policy for individual courses is set by the respective course instructors. Some
instructors may not have any attendance requirement for their courses while others may
require a specific minimum attendance percentage. It is prudent to confirm the attendance
requirement of courses during the first week itself. Some courses may have grading attached to
the attendance percentage. In addition, it is imperative to mark your attendance every day from
Monday to Friday excluding public holidays. The stipend students receive is based on their
monthly attendance. Failure to register attendance will lead to a deduction of stipend. Students
can mark their attendance using the biometric attendance facility present in the IEOR office.
M. Tech students and M.Sc. students are entitled to leaves that can be taken anytime during
the academic year and are in addition to public holidays. Both M. Tech students and M.Sc.
students (for their first two years) have the same leave policy. The leaves granted are subject to
the discretion of Faculty Advisor during the first year and the Project Guide during the second
year. Any leave taken requires his/her approval and a Leave Form (available at the IEOR office)
needs to be filled up. The leave policy is as follows:
1. Winter vacation is allowed for the first year.
2. A summer break of maximum 15 days for M.Tech first years and two months for first
year MSc-Phd students.
3. A total of 30 days (casual leave) during a year (starting from second year for MSc-Phd
students)
4. 10 days of leave for medical reasons. If leave is approved, stipend will not be deducted.
Special academic leave is also granted for attending conferences and seminars in India
or abroad. If the student’s project involves travelling, leave may be granted subject to
the approval of Guide/Faculty Advisor and the Head of Department.

LABORATORIES AND RESEARCH FACILITIES
LIBRARY
The Department library is located at Room No. 301 (Third floor), IEOR Building. Irrespective
of its size, it proves to be a valuable resource for IEOR students because a number of IEOR
specific books which are not available in the central library and are expensive to buy are
available here. Some M. Tech. dissertations are also available in our library, so that students
can refer to them and get some ideas about writing a dissertation. The library affairs are
handled by the Joint Secretary (Library and Publications). For more information regarding

Library.
IEOR LAB
The IEOR lab has nine PCs with internet connectivity plus one Wi-Fi router and a few
additional LAN ports so that people with laptops can make use of it in the lab. All the PCs have
both Windows and Linux operating systems. Also the PC’s are connected to the OPTIMUS
server of IEOR where one can login to use the software. Whatever may be the purpose (of course
it should be strictly academic), the Lab is at your service 24*7. All you have to do is get a
permission to issue the key from IEOR Office (First Floor of the building) and use the lab any
time you want. The lab affairs are handled by the Office Holder, Mr. Aba-Avi Molavane
PH.D. LAB
The Ph.D. Lab is where the brilliant research minds of IEOR are at work. The Ph.D.’s are no
less than guides and mentors for the M. Tech. and M.Sc.-Ph.D. students, so never hesitate to
drop by and get your doubts cleared by them. This lab has 20 desktops with 24 hours internet
connectivity through LAN and an additional Wi-Fi router so that personal laptops can be used.
All the computers have both Windows and Linux operating systems. The Lab also houses the
OPTIMUS and the PASSPOLI servers of IEOR through which the software like AMPL, Scilab
etc. can be accessed.

This is your personalized e-mail in IIT. Every student gets one when you enroll. Along with
normal mails, here you also get alerts for registration/ de-registration of courses, fees payment

The IEOR curricula at IITB is very well structured and prepares you for the best. Being an
interdisciplinary course, we get students from a broad spectrum and everyone knows
something about something else, jack of various trades!!
We see recruiters coming from a number of sectors- Core (OR) Operations Research, Data
science, Finance (Banks), Health Care, Retail, Technology Startups, Information Technology,
Automobile/Production, Machine Learning, Supply Chain Management to name a few.
