SingaporeChineseGirls’ School is a rare type of school inSingapore. It iscountedinseveralcategorieswhicharenotcommontomostotherschools.Asaschool,SCGSis:
Founded in�899by fiveStraitsChinesegentlemen, includingSirOngSiangSongandDrLimBoonKeng,itbeganasaschoolforChinesegirls,teachingromanisedMalay,Chinese,English,Arithmetic,Geography,MusicandSewing.TheschoolopenedinHillStreetinJune�899withjust7pupils.By�900therewere �0 and the schoolwas, by then, aGovernmentAidedSchool and thepupilsweretaughtuntilStandard�.
�908 saw the school with an average of �00 pupils andSCGSwas formed into a limited liability companyand theschooloccupiedthebuildingatthecornerofColemanandHillStreets(later thesiteof theHillStreetFireStation). In�9�5itmoved toEmeraldHill, to thesiteofDrLimBoonKeng’sfamilyhome,whereitwastoremainforcloseto70years.
In �99�, SCGSmoved to �90DunearnRoad, a site fivetimesthesizeofitsEmeraldHillHome.

ThePrincipalsandstaffof theschool,beginningwith thestringofdedicatedEnglishHeadmistressesof the school in theearly until thepost-WWII yearsensured that high standardswere kept.Beyond them,MissTanSockKern(�95� – �978) andMissRosalindHeng (�979 – �00�), took the school togreaterheightsinreputationandachievement.

The school’s success is due to the total commitment of the teachers towards the implementation of our comprehensive physical education, performing arts and co-curricular programmes focusing on basic skills and special skills, as well as the full support of our parents in the inculcation of a healthy and balanced lifestyle for our pupils.
The Secondary School has been awarded the Trim and Fit (TAF) Silver/Gold Award for the last five years, 2002-2006. The SCGS Endowment Fund assists needy pupils by giving amonthly allowance to provide for their pocketmoney and transportexpenses and paying for the pupils’ books, examination fees andcompulsoryenrichmentprogrammes.

Every year, after the release of the PSLE results, the Ministry ofEducationwillinviteeligiblePSLEpupilswhoareSingaporeanstoapplyfortheEdusaveEntranceScholarshipsforIndependentSchools(EESIS).
TheEESIS are awarded to the top one-third of the pupils posted toSecondaryOneinalltheindependentschoolsbasedontheirPSLEresults.Thescholarshipcoverstheannualschoolfeeschargedbytheindependentschoolless$�5�(theannualamountofschoolandmiscellaneousfeespaidby pupils in other secondary schools). The scholarshipwill be for the fullfouryearsofstudyintheindependentschool.
TheMinistry ofEducation gives additional yearly awards at the endofeachacademicyear to the top5%pupils ineach independentschoolwhoare not already EESIS holders. These yearly awards are to encourageand reward pupils who excel academically and to give another chanceto thosewhowere not selected in the initial round based on their PSLEresults.Selectionfortheseyearlyawardswillbebasedonthepupils’schoolexamination results for that year.
