AGENDA/TARGETS

1. I will reflect on the Student Growth Goal (SGG) process from last year.

2. I will identify the changes to the SGG process this year.

3. I will brainstorm ideas for my SGGs this year.

Page 3: Student Growth Goals

STUDENT GROWTH GOAL REFLECTION At your tables, discuss the

following things: What went well last year? What was confusing? What would you do differently?

Page 4: Student Growth Goals

STUDENT GROWTH GOAL REFLECTION On a sticky note, write down one

challenge you faced during the SGG process last year.

On another sticky note, write down one success from the SGG process last year.

Put the sticky notes on the appropriate charts: collaboration, process, assessment, technology

Page 5: Student Growth Goals

STUDENT GROWTH GOAL REFLECTION Looking at the charts

Where were our successes? Where do we still need to work?

Page 6: Student Growth Goals

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHANGES TO THE SGG PROCESS?• Categories of Measures for SGGs• Required Components for SGGs• SGG Quality Review Checklist• SGG Scoring Rubric

Page 7: Student Growth Goals

Category Types of Measures Guidance

1

Oregon’s state assessments o SMARTER Balanced (formerly

OAKS)o Extended Assessments1

Same assessment and administration guidelines are used statewide

2

Commercially developed assessments that include pre- and post-measures

Locally developed assessments that include pre- and post-measures

Results from proficiency-based assessment systems

Locally-developed collections of evidence, i.e. portfolios of student work that include multiple types of performance

Same assessment and administration guidelines are used district-wide or school-wide

Assessments meet state criteria2

Page 9: Student Growth Goals

RATIONALE

• Detailed description of the reasons for selecting this specific area

• Discussion of baseline data• Discussion of current practice

within school and/or classroom

Page 10: Student Growth Goals

RATIONALE EXAMPLE

• I chose this goal because our school improvement goal is around reading and my PLC is focused on reading this year. The DRA2 was administered during the first two weeks of school. 32 out of the 58 students are currently reading below grade level. Of those students not yet reading on grade level, many of them are close and this data makes me confident that with strategic interventions this gap can close dramatically by the end of the year.

Page 11: Student Growth Goals

STRATEGIES

• Relevant instructional strategies used to help accomplish goal

• Can be adjusted throughout the year based on student progress data

Page 12: Student Growth Goals

STRATEGIES EXAMPLE

• Create a vocabulary pretest based on the terms used in the essential curriculum and course assessment.

• Collect baseline data at the beginning of the course by administering a teacher-generated vocabulary pretest.

• Utilize the baseline data to guide instruction for the course. • Provide explicit vocabulary instruction through a variety of

vocabulary building strategies.• Provide activities linking health terms to students’ experiences

and prior knowledge. • Reinforce knowledge of health terms through multiple exposures

to vocabulary in varied sources such as magazines, textbooks, and audiovisuals.

• Throughout the semester, utilize several formative and summative assessment tools to collect evidence of student growth. Assessment tools could include pre-post unit vocabulary strategies and embedded daily tasks

• Track data from the formative and summative assessments in a systematic format that shows evidence of student growth.

• Administer the course assessment and compare results to baseline data to determine student growth.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND SUPPORT

• Opportunity for educator• What additional learning and

support do you need to meet your SLG Goals?

• Growth Mindset

Page 14: Student Growth Goals

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND SUPPORT EXAMPLE

• Time to collaborate with teaching partner, educational assistants

• Professional development on developing common formative assessments

Brainstorm ideas for SGGs for this year What area will you focus on? What assessments/measures will you use? Should you do this with your PLC? Power in

Numbers Can you use your SGGs from last year?

Use the checklist to see if they meet the criteria Begin to look up baseline data from last year
