OFFICE OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Office of Student Engagement is to design and implement comprehensive programs that enhance the overall educational experiences of students through the development of, exposure to, and participation in social, cultural, multicultural, intellectual, community service, leadership abilities and campus governance involvement. The office delivers comprehensive programs and services designed to meet the co-curricular needs of our diverse student population. We strive for excellence in the delivery of high quality programming, leadership activities, and effective resource management.

The Student Government Association supports the mission of the college and is composed of elected representatives from the student body. Collectively, they are the voice of the students and promote student life that enhances the intellectual, physical, social, and cultural atmosphere of SLCC. This is done by providing vital co-curricular activities that also enhances individual student development.

VOTER ELIGIBILITY
Any registered student of South Louisiana Community College is considered qualified and registered to vote in the SGA elections.
CANDIDATE ELIGIBILITY
Any registered student of South Louisiana Community College may become a candidate for any office for which he/she is or expects to become a constituent. The Student Government Association shall show no discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity or national origin, religion, color, age, gender, marital or parental status, veteran status, disability, or sexual orientation. All candidates must obtain, complete, and return the contents of the SGA Candidate Eligibility Packet. This packet shall include the following:
1) Eligibility & Verification Forms 2) Candidate Biographical Information Form 3) Student Signature Form
4) SLCC ULead Conference Registration The candidates for Executive President, Executive Vice President, Executive Treasurer, Executive Secretary/Chief of Staff, Associate VP of Student Rights & Responsibilities, Associate VP of Diversity & Inclusion, and Associate VP of Special Initiatives must obtain at least 100 signatures from registered SLCC students, including each student’s Banner ID number, on the official signature form included in this packet. The candidates for each Campus Assistant Vice President must obtain must obtain at least 50 signatures from registered SLCC students, including each student’s Banner ID number, on the official signature form included in this packet. SGA Election packets must be turned in to the Director of Student Engagement by no later than Tuesday, March 27th at 4:00pm. A candidate may not actively seek two SGA positions and/or an SGA and SGO leadership position concurrently.

CAMPAIGN ADVERTISMENT RULES AND REGULATIONS

The following is an abbreviated timeline for campaigning. Please see the sections that follow for detailed campaign procedures and regulations. Thursday, March 29th

Student Government Association Candidate Campaign Period: All SGA Executive Board candidates are required to campaign on at least one of the SLCC’s (7) extension campuses. Please notify via email the Coordinator for Student Engagement at least 24 hours before your scheduled campus day of campaigning. SGA Campus Assistant Vice President candidates need only campaign on their home campuses.
Monday, April 9th
SGA candidates may begin advertising their campaigns via indoor postings. Likely locations for postings include classroom bulletin boards, bulletin boards in academic building main hallways, and tack strips in doorways. No outdoor posting is allowed. No email/online message campaigning is allowed.
Monday, April 9th, 11 am
SGA E-Board Candidate Meet and Greet: SGA Executive Board candidates are required to participate in this activity for a minimum of one hour. Candidates may hand out flyers in-person. They may also advertise via t-shirts, buttons, pens, etc. at this time, provided that such materials are not valued above $3.00 per item. All materials must be branded with the candidate’s information.

SGA E-Board Candidate Town Hall Debate: SGA Executive Board candidates are required to participate in this activity. All candidates will be provided with a set of rules regarding effective and respectful communication prior to the event, and each will be expected to abide by the rules throughout the debate.

Campaign Material Approval Process
ALL designs for campaign materials (flyers, pens, buttons, t-shirts, etc.) must be approved by the Coordinator for Student Engagement before being displayed/distributed on campus. Required approval of materials for both executive board and non-executive leadership position candidates is as follows:
Student Engagement Approval. An electronic copy of the material must be emailed to the Coordinator for Student Engagement no less than 24 hours before intended display/distribution. These materials cannot be display/distributed until an approval email is received from the Coordinator for Student Engagement. If revisions are suggested, the materials must be revised and resubmitted for approval.
Timeline. All election materials must be approved before Thursday, April 12th. No materials will be approved after this date.
Removal of unapproved postings. Any campaign materials that have not been approved through the processes listed above are subject to immediate removal by the Office of Student Engagement and immediate campaign suspension.
Posting violations and sanctions. Any candidates who post or distribute a campaign items that have not been approved by the Coordinator for Student Engagement will face immediate campaign suspension.
Campaign Regulations
Approved Indoor-Posting Areas. Indoor postings may appear ONLY on bulletin boards and tack strips in academic buildings and other indoor locations. This requirement stands even if postings for other college events appear on other surfaces. Indoor postings may NOT appear on any of the following*:
o Bare walls where no bulletin board or tack strip is present o Doors or doorways o Elevators o Glass surrounding doors/entryways o Windows o Pay phone kiosks o Structural support columns/beams o Stairwells
*Please note that this list is not exhaustive, but is intended as further clarification for those areas in which indoor posting is strictly prohibited.
Number of Postings Permitted: Classrooms. A candidate’s name and/or likeness may appear on ONLY ONE posting in any individual classroom; this is true even if a classroom features multiple bulletin boards or tack strips. There are no exceptions.
Number of Postings Permitted: Outdoors. NO campaign materials may be posted outdoors. This includes building walls and posts, sidewalks, and vehicles. Size of Postings Permitted. Postings may not exceed 11” x 17” in size.

Forbidden Types of Postings. No stickers or self-adhesive campaign postings are permitted at any time, through stickers may be distributed directly, given that the backing is not removed.
Defacing of candidate materials. Any candidates (or anyone associated with a candidate’s campaign) seen removing or defacing another candidate’s campaign materials will be subject to immediate campaign suspension. Chartered Student Organization Visits. Candidates are permitted to visit the meetings of SLCC Student Groups and Organizations in order to advertise their campaigns, though visits may not be scheduled or take place until the candidate’s eligibility to run has been confirmed by the Coordinator for Student Engagement. Candidates must receive permission from the Advisor and/or President to advertise their campaigns at SGO meetings. Emailing. On the day preceding elections, the Coordinator for Student Engagement will send an email to the entire college community announcing candidates and the election process. The order in which candidates are presented in the email will be determined by the position and then by alphabet. Each candidate may submit up to 200 words of advertisement for inclusion in the college–wide election announcement email. Advertisements must be submitted to the Coordinator for Student Engagement via email no later than 5:00 pm on April 9th for inclusion in the college-wide email announcement.
At no other time may any email address ending in the domain “solacc.edu” be used to advertise a candidate’s campaign or status as a candidate in the election. The one exception to this rule is as follows: Unbiased mention of a candidate’s name and potential position in the inclusion of a student organization’s meeting minutes where the candidate previously made a presentation to that student organization. The mention may not include any information other than name and position. The Coordinator for Student Engagement shall be the final judge as to whether any email constitutes a violation of the email policy. Candidates are reminded that they may be held liable for emails sent out by other students and/or supporters. Websites, Social Media, Text Groups, and/or other Electronic Communications. Candidates are permitted to operate a website which advertises their campaign and/or status as a candidate in the election. The content of campaign websites, including written and visual content, is subject to the campaign timeline and approval process. The Coordinator for Student Engagement reserves the right to enforce election policies and/or sanctions based on website content. Although the use of social media, text groups, and other electronic communications cannot be expressly regulated by SLCC, the Coordinator for Student Engagement reserves the right to enforce election policies and/or sanctions based on the content of any electronic medium. This is especially true if the content in question is thought to constitute libel (false statements damaging to a person's reputation or defamation).
Person-to-Person Campaigning. Person-to-Person campaigning is defined as openly distributing campaign materials to individuals with whom the candidate is not personally acquainted. Person-to-Person campaigning is permitted ONLY during the SGA campaigning period April 9th-13th. In addition, no candidate or someone supporting a campaign may campaign within 30 feet of a polling place (as defined by the Director of Student Engagement), listed below:
Any on-campus computer lab or room with computers available for public use
Any on-campus library

CAMPAIGN GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE
Any grievances regarding an SGA campaign must be submitted via email with the Coordinator for Student Engagement within 24 hours of the disputed occurrence. For the purposes of grievances, postings shall be considered an ongoing occurrence—a posting violation may be reported at any time without being subject to a 24-hour limitation. If the full details are not reported to the Coordinator for Student Engagement within 24 hours of the occurrence, no action will be taken. Exception to this procedure may be taken if there in incontrovertible proof that candidate in question has committed a Tier II offense or if the candidate in question has allegedly committed a Tier III offense. All candidates will have 24 hours from the time when election results are announced to file a protest to the Director of Student Engagement and contest the election results.
CAMPAIGN GRIEVANCE POLICY The campaign grievance policy is applicable to all candidates as well as those campaigning on behalf of all candidates. All decisions regarding grievances are final and binding unless an appeal is made to the Coordinator for Student Engagement within 24 hours of the sanction’s announcement. Campaign grievances are separated into three separate tiers based upon the severity of the offense. The following list, though not exhaustive, is provided as an example of possible offenses and sanctions so that candidates may understand what types of behavior are punishable as election violations.
Tier I Violations Offenses. Slander (a false oral report intending to injure the reputation of an opposing candidate)
Illegal posting Disrespectful conduct Falsification of information in campaign literature
Sanctions. Correction of the illegal posting within a time limit set by the Coordinator for Student Engagement Limitation of campaign privileges Appeal: Coordinator for Student Engagement
Tier II Violations Offenses. Libel (a false written report intending to injure the reputation of an opposing candidate)
