• many former student leaders from studentcouncils have also figured in leading differentsectors in society in espousing more meaningfulchanges in society

social issues through symposia, fora, lectures,seminars, teach-ins, and other creative forms

• should also be the venue to hear grievances of students and to unite them through resolutions,policies and programs

• should create desks and committees tosystematize the action on specific concerns





• if campus politics fail, student leaders arechallenged to lead their constituents to take theirdemands outside campuses

• should lead in the democratic exercise of freeexpression

• should link arms with fellow youth and students

from different schools, communities and workplaces to understand their specific andshared experiences

• approximate the time allotment for each item on

the agenda and avoid concentrating on one item while sacrificing time and quality of discussionon other matters

• sum up essential points agreed upon after thediscussion of each item



• use persuasive approaches instead of animposing or highly emotional posture

• avoid going into the traditional type of

discussion which is characterized by intrigue,name-calling and threats

• we should respect the opinion of others and we

should unite with our colleagues who havecontrary views



Tips on Handling Meetings

Before the meeting:

• Plan the meeting carefully: who, what, when, where, why

• Prepare agenda and send it out in advance

• Reports, documents and other preparationsrequired from the members must be prepared beforehand



During the meeting:

• Start on time

• Make an expectation check and level off with the

members by stating the objectives of the meeting

• Review, revise, rearrange the agenda if necessary

• Set clear time limits. Thoroughly discuss toppriority items first, then the next priority itemsfirst, then the next priority item, and so on



At the end of the meeting:

• Review resolutions, plans and tasks

• Set date, place tentative agenda for the nextmeeting

• Close the meeting positively



After the meeting:

• Prepare the minutes of the meeting

• Follow up action items



d. Regular planning/programming

• involves selecting objectives and the actions toachieve

• regular planning is necessary for student councilto work effectively

• serves as a guide to student council to performits tasks and responsibilities.



Steps in planning and programming

• analyze the issue/topic to be discussed and theconditions of the student council and its members

• set up the main and secondary objectives

• design activities/projects to achieve the objectives

• tasking, depending on the capabilities of student counciland its members

• phasing/Scheduling and realistic target setting

• documentation





Steps in conducting assessments

• gather and collate all pertinent data on the program

• analyze the gathered data
