By Bren O’BrienPhoenix Thoroughbreds’ spring of Australian milestones continued with a first homebred success for the burgeoning Dubai-based operation after Farnan’s (Not A Single Doubt) victory at Canberra.

Coming just three weeks after Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible) delivered Phoenix its first Group 1 success in Australia with victory for trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace in the G1 Manikato S. at Moonee Valley, the success of Farnan is another milestone.

Having his first start for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Farnan, sporting the Aquis Farm colours, strode clear under Winona Costin to win by 5l, with ambitions to send the colt to the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast in January.

“It’s always great to have a winner, but it’s always extra special when you’ve bred them,” said Phoenix Thoroughbreds CEO Amer Abdulaziz. “We have big plans for our breeding operation in Australia, so to have a potentially smart winner is a welcome boost. The

bloodstock industry in the country is an integral part of our business model and we hope to continue to grow our influence and success in the future.”

Phoenix Thoroughbreds purchased Farnan’s dam, the Group 3 winner Tallow (Street Cry {Ire}), in foal to Not A Single Doubt for $250,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

The resultant colt was sold for $550,000 as part of the Vinery Stud draft at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale to a partnership of Aquis and his breeders at Phoenix.

Put in the care of Waterhouse and Bott, he bounced off a recent trial win at Warwick Farm to debut at the national capital and win with authority.

“He’s a very kind horse,” Winona Costin said of the performance. “Even walking behind the barriers, he was nice and relaxed. He stood nicely in the barriers and flew out. The other one just wanted to take up the lead and I was happy to take the sit.

“Even walking behind the barriers, he was nice and relaxed. He stood nicely in the barriers and flew out.” - Winona Costin.

“He relaxed beautifully there, but when I asked him for an effort, he had a really good turn of foot

and I was able to ease him down on the line.”

Phoenix has made a significant splash both in the racing and broader thoroughbred industries in Australia over the past three years.

The internationally based investment fund races around 30 horses in Australia, either under its own name or in partnership, while it has around 30 broodmares in Australia and interests in several stallions, notably Invader.

Farnan’s dam Tallow, is now in foal to The Autumn Sun, having missed the past two seasons.

The National Stud has revealed the stud fees for their stallion roster for 2020 headlined by newcomer Advertise.

Phoenix Thoroughbreds’ star sprinter won three Group One’s during his career, taking the Phoenix Stakes as a juvenile before going on to land the Commonwealth Cup and Prix Maurice de Gheest as a three-year-old. The son of Showcasing will command a stud fee of £25,000.

“Advertise possessed the perfect combination of speed, precocity and toughness,” Said Stud director Tim Lane. “His three Group 1 victories cemented him as one of the best sprinters of his generation and we are very confident he has the physical attributes to be the complete package for breeders.”

Advertise isn’t the only stallion Phoenix Thoroughbreds have an interest in at The National

Stud. The Dubai-based operation also holds a large stake in Aclaim, who will stand at £9,500 for his third breeding season. His first foals will be hitting the sales later this month after he proved to be a popular choice with breeders.

“Aclaim has been very well supported throughout his first two seasons at stud,” Lane said of the Prix de la Foret winner. “He represents excellent value at his current fee and we are confident his first foals will be well received at the upcoming sales.”

Phoenix Thoroughbreds plan to support both stallions in the sales ring and with their own mares.

New additions from Keeneland November Sale phoenixthorughbreds.net

Phoenix Thoroughbreds have further strengthened their breeding interests by adding six mares from the Keeneland November Sale.

Breeding is a vital part of the innovative fund’s business model and they have been steadily growing their broodmare bands in North America, Australia and Europe.

In foal to Uncle Mo, Pioneer of the Nile offspring Dreaming Of You was the group’s most expensive purchase. Listed as Hip 226 the team behind the ambitious operation went to $500,000 to secure the mare who is from the family of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner New Years Day. Closely related to Prioress winner Penny’s Reshoot she has a page full of multiple Graded Stakes winners including Justwhistledixie, Fountain Of Youth winner Mohaymen and Kingly.

By the time Dreaming Of You joined the roster, Phoenix had already moved to acquire Hip 46. A winning Private Vow mare by the name of Pacific Pink she is pregnant to More Than Ready. A half-sister to five-time winner Fearless Leader she has a family chock-full of stakes performers.

Multiple-winner and black-type placed Boom Bam Bing (Hip 534) was another picked up that will take on broodmare duties for her new owners. Carrying the foal of Blame, the daughter of Exchange Rate has close bloodlines with Grade Three scorer Ms Bad Behaviour, while Grade Two success Devil’s Preacher resides in the family tree.

From the family of Grade One winners Dahar, Rivlia, Delegant and Dhalia’s Dreamer Hip 598 was another acquired by “Team Phoenix”. Named Emerald Quality and out of Quality Road, the mare is in foal to Twirling Candy.

Vision D’Etat mare Cartabianca was picked up as Hip 958. A listed winner in France and with a strong European pedigree, including Group One placed Kindergarten; there is every chance she’ll be shipped across the Atlantic to start her career in the breeding sheds.

The final Hip to join the Phoenix breeding ranks was 1048, otherwise known as Ginger Mo. Not surprisingly by Uncle Mo, she is related to Grade Three winner Speed Seeker and is in foal to Bernardini.
