Welcome to the latest edition of e-coatingsolutions, the newsletter of Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Europe, Middle East & Africa.
Welcome Contents
I am delighted to announce that Sherwin-Williams Protective and Marine EMEA is one of only a handful companies that have won the highly prestigious Queen’s Awards For Enterprise: Innovation 2016. It has been achieved for the development of Dura-Plate™ 301W, a coating which combines surface and humidity tolerance with low temperature curing; making lost maintenance time during winter months in northern Europe a problem of the past.
We have pulled together a ‘special edition’ on The Queen’s Award which can be found in this magazine and contains details about the product, why it won the award and how it has been used by major companies in their maintenance schedules.
Essentially by working with key customers, the Sherwin-Williams technical team
researched and developed Dura-Plate™ 301W to offer a longer painting calendar and with it increased efficiencies and a reduction in overall project costs.
Dura-Plate™ 301W has already won plaudits from around the oil and gas industry for its broad use in atmospheric service conditions in offshore, marine, industrial and infrastructure applications.
The team from Sherwin-Williams will offically receive the award at Buckingham Palace in July 2016.
This award is testimony to the hard work and dedication of the team in the EMEA region, of which I am extremely proud.
Centrica Energy is an international business which generates power for millions of homes.
Centrica’s fields, located in and around Morecambe Bay are some of the largest on the UK continental shelf. The company has both onshore and offshore facilities at this location.
The Morecambe Hub is located in a C5 corrosive environment (marine, offshore, estuaries, coastal areas with high salinity*) in which significant maintenance is required. The protective coatings which had been used did have a number of limitations. The manufacturer’s technical instruction stated that the coatings could not be applied outside the required substrate condition, relative humidity and dew point parameters listed. This resulted in a significant amount of environmental downtime (non productive painting time) being recorded in Centrica’s 2014 maintenance campaign.
An alternative, effective and innovative external coating which either eradicated or reduced environmental downtime was needed.
Sherwin-Williams’ Dura-Plate™ 301W, a surface and humidity tolerant epoxy system which provides outstanding durability and long-term performance was identified as ideal.

Case study cont’d
The images above show the application of Dura-Plate™ 301W to pipework (1st coat) standard coatings could not be applied as they were ‘environmentally out of spec’. Without Dura-Plate™ 301W a full 48 hours of painting would have been lost.
Dura-Plate™ 301W has numerous environmental benefits which made it ideal for the Morecambe Hub project.
Dura-Plate™ 301W has excellent environmental tolerance with no dew point restrictions, no relative humidity restrictions, can be applied over damp surfaces and medium flash rust (WJ2M – SSPC VIS4) therefore extending the coating season. It also has excellent edge retention for long-term performance, excellent adhesion and is surface tolerant.
Bridges and highways help to form the backbone of the UK’s economy, and asset owners in these sectors face tremendous maintenance challenges.
Harsh and changeable climates, punishing loads of traffic including motor vehicles and trains, and round-the-clock use mean carrying out even routine maintenance can be difficult.
Various Sherwin-Williams’ products offer specialist protection useful in these environments, including Macropoxy™ L674 epoxy blast primer, Macropoxy™ C123 glass flake epoxy and Acrolon™ C137V2 acrylic urethane finish.
Major projects like the Clifton Suspension Bridge, 47 bridges on the M6 Toll Road, Tower Bridge in London, the Forth Rail Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge across the Thames have all been protected by Sherwin-Williams’ various protective coatings.
Recently, a new product has been providing major benefits to rail infrastructure, offering cold curing down to 0ºC and excellent adhesion when applied to damp steelwork.
Dura-Plate™ 301W is a cold curing version in the series of surface and humidity tolerant epoxy products.
Following successful field trials in Lancashire, the product is now approved to Network Rail standards M24 and M34, which include application to wet and dry abrasive blast cleaned and mechanically prepared substrates.
The bridge subjected to the field trial was typical of an old railway structure and consisted of main girders, cross girders, sandwich plates and numerous rivets. The bridge spans a main road and carries seven rail lines which form part of the West Coast Main line.
Prior to the trial, the bridge was exhibiting significant corrosion and paint breakdown with evidence of extensive water ingress due to a damaged waterproofing membrane. Because of the extent of water ingress, a conventional coating system could not be used.
Dura-Plate™ 301W offered applicators an extended painting window and with it increased efficiencies and the potential for overall project cost savings.
Elsewhere, Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings offer a full range of protective systems for Network Rail bridges and structures.
The Dura-Plate™ 301 series of products hold approvals from numerous recognised international bodies including NORSOK, Navsea/US Navy and has the world’s only IMO PSPC approval over UHP water jetting.
Sherwin-Williams has recently created a Bridges and Highways interactive digital hub which holds information on highways and network rail specifications, track records, case studies and product information. The hub which is extremely user friendly has been very well received by the industry.

Structures face fire engineering challenges
In-depthNews
Hundreds of skyscrapers and tower blocks under construction in London present fire safety issues for the ‘responsible person’ involved in the development.Under the current Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, those responsible for commercial buildings including the employer, owner, or any other person who has control of any part of the premises, must carry out a detailed fire risk assessment identifying the risks and hazards in the premises.
A recent report revealed that a total of 263 buildings higher than 20 storeys are either being built or are going through the planning system in the capital – 11 per cent more than last year.
Bob Glendenning, manager fire engineering for Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings said: “There are an awful lot of projects either under development or in the planning phase and many of the responsible people under legislation may not be fully aware of their responsibilities.”
Recently Sherwin-Williams hosted a conference and a focus group to discuss the issues of fire safety in modern steel structures and is leading the way on the issue.

Sherwin-Williams’ leading fire design estimation tool is offering a new solution to the issues of fire engineering safety.
The software in the new FIRETEX® Design Estimator 2.0 suite offers the capability of providing calculations for coating thicknesses of all shapes, sizes and combinations of apertures within cellular beams.
It meets the very latest Steel Construction Institute (SCI) guidance documents as well as the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) Yellow Book Edition 5.
Offering efficient handling of unfilled voids with trapezoidal profiled metal decking systems, project sharing and designs to both British Standard as well as the emerging Eurocodes, the software is independently tested and fully verified under the Exova Certifire scheme.
The Sherwin-Williams FEET team has also developed an API (application program interface) for FDE 2.0 to fully integrate with TEKLA; evolutionary software which gives engineers the power to analyse and design buildings efficiently and profitably. The FDE API has streamlined the fire estimation team’s work. The integration of the software means that the FEET team
can now feed back to fabricators with a project proposal regarding how much fire protection is needed, across incredibly complex structures in just an afternoon, prior to the introduction of the API, projects such as this would have taken a week.
Ongoing updates, guidance and support on all legislative and industry changes are also made available through a new dedicated web download site.
Bob Glendenning, manager for fire engineering for Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings said: “We are well aware of the challenges facing estimators and structural engineers and we believe this software helps to eliminate any personal interpretations or assumptions.”

Glasgow Forte is one of Scotland’s top shopping destinations. Sherwin-Williams was called on by the design team and fabricator to provide both corrosion protection and fire protection systems for use on the structural steel as part of a $35million investment including a new, 600-space car park development.
The solution for the majority of the car park was required to offer up to 20 years corrosion protection for the steel structure of the car park, exposed to C3 and C4 environments – medium to high corrosion categories usually featuring pollution or low to moderate salinity.
For stairwells and retail units, used as escape routes in an emergency, up to 60 minutes fire protection was required.
The Challenge
Case study:Glasgow Forte car park uses FIRETEX® FX6000 which dries in just one hour
Sherwin-Williams’ specified Macropoxy™ C400V3 primer for the main car park at 250µm dft with Acrolon™ C137V2 topcoat to be applied on site, offering protection against corrosion.
Initially the customer selected FIRETEX® FX2003, another product in the FIRETEX® range, to offer fire protection, but were so impressed with the advantages offered by FIRETEX® FX6000 the decision was made to switch to the more advanced coating.
FIRETEX® FX6000 offers a fast and more durable cure (which dries in just one hour) means less onsite touch up is required. When coatings are applied offsite, generally there is the danger of damage during transportation resulting in small repairs having to be carried out. As FIRETEX® FX6000 is highly durable and robust, damage does not present an issue.
As a result, the stairwell and retail units are FIRETEX® FX6000 at 800µm dft (columns), 1,800µm dft (beams), 6,000µm dft (hollows), with Acrolon™ C137V2 at 100µm dft.
Shop applicators at BHC report FX6000 is the best intumescent product they have sprayed, particularly in terms of ease of use, and offers the best surface finish they have seen for an intumescent, boasting top coat-like aesthetics.
BHC also confirms good durability in transporting from shop to site, and in use over a standard product, replacing a traditional two-coat system.
The newly released Pro-Cryl™ 7000 by Sherwin-Williams is a water-based pre-fabrication blast primer, which provides temporary protection for steel surfaces prepared by abrasive blast cleaning. Pro-Cryl’s durability far exceeds any competitive water based product; giving long term weather resistance leading to an extended fabrication window. Compared to its closest competitive product, Pro-Cryl™ 7000 offers a 40% reduction in the amount of corrosion seen on a panel when corrosion tested over a period of seven days*
Sherwin-Williams aims to develop products which provide the attributes which fabricators need, with this in mind Pro-Cryl™ 7000 is a fast drying product which is touch dry after only fifteen minutes, has low VOC and is easy to apply. Designed for use in shop applications it is fully weldable and the product of choice when environmental regulations are of prime importance to the user.
