ENGINEER DESIGNED STRUCTURES
2.1 OWNER SUPPLIED DRAWINGS
The following galvanized steel structures have been designed by the Owner:
Erection bolts and nuts shall be high strength per ASTM A325 and ASTM A563 Type DH specifications, for bearing type connections and shall be hot dip galvanized. Washers shall be hardened steel washers in accordance with ASTM F436. All bolts shall be furnished with type “MF” locknuts.
Equipment bolts and nuts, if specified, shall be low carbon steel in accordance with ASTM A307. Bevel washers shall be supplied where required.
Erection and equipment bolt and nut quantities shall be increased by 5 percent, unless otherwise specified on the drawings, to account for losses.
Standard anchor bolts shall be ASTM A36 or F1554, size and quantity as shown on the drawings. Anchor bolts shall be furnished with three (3) nuts (ASTM A563 Type DH), and two (2) flat washers (ASTM F436).
2.3 CODES AND STANDARDS
Structural steel shall be manufactured, fabricated, and assembled with best present-day manufacturing and installation practices.
Unless specifically noted to the contrary, steel structure design, fabrication, and erection shall comply with applicable section of latest revisions of the following codes and standards:
• “Specification for the Design, Fabrication, and Erection of
Structural Steel for Buildings” contained in “Steel Construction
Manual” of the American Institute of Steel Construction.
• “National Electric Safety Code” (Standard C2), American National
Standards Institute.
• “Code of Standard Practice” for the American Institute of Steel
Construction.
• “Specification for Structural Steel Joints Using A325 or A490 Bolts”
of the American Institute of Steel Construction.
Where conflicts are present between referenced codes and standards, the code or standard establishing more stringent requirements shall be followed.
2.4 FABRICATION
Steel structures shall be fabricated as shown on the drawings. Supplier shall assume responsibility as noted. Supplier shall verify all dimensions to verify proper fit up of structure connections prior to fabrication. Any deviation in dimension or materials from that shown on the drawings shall be submitted to the Engineer for his written approval prior to fabrication. Such submittals shall be in the form of shop fabrication drawings, per Section 2.10 of this specification.
Prior to being worked in any manner, structural materials shall be cleaned of all rust and foreign particles. Material shall be straight within the tolerance allowed by ASTM Specification A6. If straightening is necessary, it may be done by mechanical means or by application of a limited amount of localized heat. Straightening shall be done in a manner that will not injure the material.
Punching and drilling shall be done accurately. Center to center distance between holes of a piece shall not vary more than 1/16 inch from the specified dimension. Holes other than those shown on the drawings and those required for the galvanizing process shall be approved by the Engineer. Burrs caused by drilling or punching shall be removed prior to galvanizing.
All connections shall be shop welded, except as noted below:
• Connections required or provided for disassembly and shipment of
structure. Field welding for reassembly will not be permitted.
• Bolted connections shown on the specification drawings or
approved on the supplier’s shop drawings.
Arc welding electrodes shall be in accordance with the requirements of the American Welding Society Specification D1.1, latest edition. Welding electrodes shall be E-70XX or equivalent wire if semi-automatic or automatic welding is used. Welding shall be performed by operators who have been qualified by tests as prescribed by AWS D1.1 to perform the type of welding required.
2.5 SHOP ASSEMBLY
Bolted structures shall be shop assembled to an extent that insures the correct fit of parts, adequate bolt length, and proper field erection. The necessity of drifting shall be cause for rejection.
2.6 GALVANIZING
All structural members, hardware and locknuts shall be hot dip galvanized, in accordance with ASTM A123, A143, A153, A384, A385, A386. Steel to be galvanized shall be clean and free from welding slag. All burrs and sharp edges shall be ground smooth.
Material on which the galvanizing has been damaged may be redipped, unless the damage is local and can be satisfactorily repaired by applying two coats of zinc base paint. Any member which has the galvanized coat damaged after being dipped twice shall be rejected.
In order to accommodate the galvanizing process:
• All tubular column base plates and closed tubular beam end plates
shall have vent holes for pressure relief and drainage, or as
detailed on the drawings.
• All gussets shall be cropped on inside corners.
• All tubular columns with welded top plates shall have semi-circular
holes cut into the top of the tube.
• All tubular columns with base plates to be grouted shall have semi-
circular holes cut into the bottom of the tube to serve as weep
holes, unless otherwise indicated on the drawings.
2.7 MARKING
Each structure shall be plainly marked or stamped with its substation name and its respective erection identification mark. Pieces longer than 18 feet shall be marked at each end.
2.8 DELIVERY AND SHIPMENT
Structural Steel, with all associated hardware and fasteners, shall be shipped in the least amount of shipments required, F.O.B. job site. The Paine Substation site is located four miles northwest of the City of Idaho Falls on North River Road. The substation address is 6210 North River Road, Idaho Falls, ID 83402. The standard drawing size for shop drawings shall be 22” x 34”. Drawings shall only contain a single drawing per page and be laid out in legible, organized manner, with uniformity in appearance, style, contents, and dimensional proportions on good quality paper. Material lists shall be included on the shop drawings.
Electronic files of all shop drawings shall be AutoCAD “DWG” files or PDF files, and shall include all reference files that will enable Engineer and Owner to view and generate plot files that will result in an exact match of the submitted hard copy.
Approval Drawings
Provide three (3) sets of drawings prior to fabrication. The Engineer will return to the Supplier, within two weeks after receipt, one set of drawings marked “Resubmit”, “Approved”, or “Approved as Revised”, as the case might be. In the last case, all revisions will be clearly shown
Page 8 of 9
on the returned set, which shall be considered as an approved set. Design revisions, in accordance with corrections shown thereon, may be considered as ready for fabrication.
