What is Stress ?

Stress has been defined as a physical, mental or emotional response to events which cause mental or bodily tension.

stress is a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilize.

Problems with definition

One problem with a single definition is that stress is made up of many things It is a family of related experiences, pathways, responses and outcomes caused by a range of different events or circumstances. Different people experience different aspects and identify with different definitions

Classified into two:1.Positive stress (Eustress) Positive stress is usually the

outcome of a positive attitude ,good time management practices, and effective prioritising of one’s activities (putting first things first).

Experiencing positive stress leads to several benefits which include: Increased Creativity, Higher Productivity, Improved Self-Esteem, Better Health

2.Negative stress (distress): Negative stress is usually the

outcome of a poor attitude poor time management practices, and failing to prioritise one’s activities.

Experiencing negative stress leads to weight loss,unexpected hair loss, depression etc.

Moderate levels of stress may actually improve performance and efficiency

Too little stress may result in boredom Too much stress may cause an unproductive

anxiety level

Individual causes

Body-Oriented:- It affects the body which is related with some physical symptoms such as difficult in sleeping , feeling tense , drinking too much ,not stay fit , less care of appearance and not relaxing. Emotion Oriented :- It is related to sentiment or emotion. And affects emotional life with some symptoms such as excessive worry about life , personal relationship , health , frustration , feeling irritable and angry and feeling of loneliness.

Relationship Oriented:-relationship can be with the organisation , with the work and oneself. Some symptoms of relationship are conflict between personal goal and organisational goal , bad feeling about what organisation is doing.

Event Oriented:- the events in one’s life may also cause conflict such as death , illness , retirement , divorce etc.

Group causes

Lack of Cohesiveness:- Closeness or attachment is important for the employee of lower level. Stress occurs when a group member ignores others. Lack of Social Support:- Group support facilitates sharing problem and happiness to the members. So lack of such support stress can be caused. Conflicts:- Conflicts among and between the group may cause stress. If the roles are unclear , communication is poor and perpetual differences may be the main cause of conflict.

Organizational causes

Organisational Design:- Due to poor organisational design stress may cause. It may be line-staff conflict , role conflict , work overload , poor job climate and poor promotion.

Working Condition:- Noise , heat , cold , poor lighting , polluted air , water , crowded work area may be the cause of stress.

Environmental causes

Social Changes:- Chang in social norms and value may create stress if it is not accepted.

Family:- Family has big impact on personality development. Family situation may create stress.

Consequences of stress

Physiological :- This condition may be from medical problem such as alcoholism , cancer , diabetes , unhygienic food , hair loss , headaches , heart disease , hypertension and sexual dysfunction etc.

Psychological:- The major condition resulting from stress may be; absenteeism , dissatisfaction , frustration , conflicts , drug addiction and emotional instability.

Organisational:- The conditions resulting from stress may be low motivation , low job performance , low productivity , high turn over and low quality of interpersonal relationship

Effective individual strategies include time management techniques, physical exercise, relaxation, training

Practicing time management principles like making daily list of activities, prioritizing it by importance and urgency, knowing what the work to be done.
