Think about activities that we’ve already done where people have shared information about themselves or discussions that you’ve had with others.

This person must not be sat at your table

The impact of stress

If stress continues, it can begin to have a serious negative impact upon our wellbeing.

Commonly, it takes a toll on:• The body (unpleasant physical symptoms)• Behaviours / actions / the things we doIn turn, this can lead to psychological difficulties, and exacerbate or create other mental health problems.

Diverse cultures perceive stressors differently and respond to stressful

situations in other ways

Personality and life experiences are truly affecting the way we respond to stress, but do you know that other factors like gender and culture can contribute to our different responses to stressors?

Tips for managing stress• Eat sensibly and get plenty of

rest• Minimise caffeine, alcohol, and

smoking• Avoid drugs / stimulants• Time management techniques• Don’t take on too much at once• Plan time for yourself

• Make use of relaxation techniques• Breathing techniques and muscle

relaxation

each day• Take up a new hobby,

particularly:• Something creative• Something practical

• Set yourself goals• Start small, and build up

• Connect with others and give back to others

Coping with stress

Use the small whiteboards to write answers to the following question;

Unhealthy ways of coping with stress

•Smoking•Drinking too much •Bingeing on junk or comfort food•Zoning out for hours in front of the TV or computer

•Withdrawing from friends, family, and activities

•Using pills or drugs to relax •Sleeping too much•Procrastinating•Filling up every minute of the day to avoid facing problems•Taking out your stress on others (lashing out, angry outbursts, physical violence)

These coping strategies may temporarily reduce stress, but they cause more damage in the long run:
