Just as we adults cherish vacation days, students sometimes need a break from their routines to recharge! We hope you are able to spend time with your families, especially on Family Day, Monday, February 18th. Please try to take some time on Family Day to read together, share a legend, learn a new card game, go tobogganing, play a board game, or just go for a walk together. Before you know it, the holidays will be over and it will be back to the early mornings. In a short while after we return to school, we will be praying together and gathering for liturgies to prepare for Lent, which begins March 6th. We will be working hard to continue our support of others in our community and all around Mother Earth. We look forward to your continued support through donations and your time spent with us. We pray that each of you will be safe and healthy. Cristin Dorgan-Lee Mike Thorson Healthy Eating We are blessed that nutritious snacks, breakfasts, and lunches are available each day to any student who needs, and we continue to remind and encourage all our students to bring healthy food and drink to school. Recently, we are seeing an increasing amount of junk food (pop and chips most often) being brought to school and, increasingly, being consumed before school begins. Please help us by talking with your children and reminding them not to bring any type of junk food to school, and/or to not stop anywhere on the way to school to buy any junk food. We want the children to be able to give their best each day and junk food does not help. Hertz Busing – Weather & Delays

Hertz and their drivers enjoy working with our children on a daily basis. Their drivers do try to think of your children as

their own and do want to take care of them.

In addition, there are days that the weather does not cooperate and they are not able to transport our children. They follow

environment Canada at

http://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/sk-40_metric_e.html and make their decision at 7:00am.

Hertz will cancel buses if the temperature reaches –45 with the windchill.

Hertz has a hotline you can call regarding any cancellations or delays. 306-374-4777.

They also have a website that you can access that will give the updated details of any cancellations or delays.

https://www.hertznorthernbus.com

If you have any questions, please call their office at 306-374-5161 and they will try to help.

Our Next event is APRIL 26-28, 209 at Prairieland Park – Hall D

School News Congratulations to all the students who participated in the Kiwanis Speech Contest. Special thanks to Max who will represent our school February 11th at Bishop Roborecki School @ 5:45 pm.

School Wide Zones Our School has been participating in the Zones of Regulation curriculum (Zones for short) which are lessons and activities

to help students gain skills in the area of self-regulation. Self-regulation can go by many names, such as, self-control, self-

management, and impulse control. It is defined as the state of alertness of both the body and emotions for the specific

situation. The lessons and learning activities are designed to help students recognize what then are in the different zones

as well as learn how to use strategies to change or stay in the zone they are in. It is important to note that we all

experience all the zones. The yellow and red zones are not “naughty” rather, different zones are required at different

times.

A critical aspect of this curriculum is that all people supporting the students know and understand The Zones language.

This creates a comfortable and supportive environment for the student to practice his or her self-regulation skills. We

encourage you to ask your children what they have learned about Zones and how to apply the Zones.

Each newsletter we will share more strategies for us all to use.

Treaty Zones We are excited to announce that on Wednesday March 6th at 1pm our school will have a celebration to unveil a bronzed

Treaty Medal that will have a permanent place of honour in our school. This medal is a visible statement recognizing our

treaty relationship. In 2016, the Cathedral of the Holy Family installed a treaty medal, and this year with the blessing of

the school division leadership, our community, and our diocese St. Michael School will hold a treaty medal installation.

Treaty education is taught in all grades in Saskatchewan and we are happy to invite family and friends to join us in the

celebration. Below are some questions you might have.

What is a treaty?

Treaties are mutually beneficial arrangements. Newcomer to Canada built their society in this place where some were

looking for political and religious freedoms. They and their descendants benefited from the wealth generated from this

land. Today, there are misconceptions that only First Nations peoples are part of the treaties, but in reality, all of us are

treaty people.

What is a treaty medal?

The treaty medal is a replica of medals originally presented to participating First Nations Chiefs in commemoration of the

treaty. It portrays a Treaty Commissioner grasping the hand of a First Nations man. Between them lies a hatchet buried in

the ground. The other symbols on the medallion, the grass and the water echo and symbolize their expected continuity:

“…that this Treaty is to last for as long as the Sun shines, the Grass grows and the Rivers flow.”

Please be aware that the school is not open until 8:30am. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide supervision to our students until that time; therefore, students should not be arriving before 8:30. Thank you for your cooperation in the matter! In order to reduce the amount of student time spent out of the classroom to use the phone, we ask students and their parents to make their various arrangements outside of school hours. Student use of the school phone should be for emergency issues only. Thank you for your help in this regard!

2018/19 Student Technology Acceptable Use Policy

St. Michael Community School promotes the safe use of technology to support student learning.

St. Michael Community School recognizes that some students bring their own technology to school. As such,

personal technology is included in the Acceptable Use Agreement.

2. I understand that GSCS staff and students use Microsoft Office 365, which is a cloud-based service.

3. I understand that I will follow all established Internet safety guidelines including: a) Technology is considered an extension of the classroom. Therefore, any content that is deemed inappropriate in

the classroom is also inappropriate in a digital context.

b) Protecting all of my identifying information and establish appropriate privacy settings when using technology.

c) I will not post identifying information without consulting the three questions -accessibility, ownership, and

erasability.

d) I must never, under any circumstances, agree to meet someone, that I have met over the Internet.

e) When signing up for a web tool, I will consult the terms of service, answer questions truthfully and take

appropriate steps to protect my privacy. If I am unsure of what to do, I will ask my teacher for assistance.*

f) I will not post photos/videos of myself or others, without written parental/guardian consent (Part One of the

Media Release).

4. My Office365 account is monitored by GSCS. Inappropriate use may be flagged and addressed by the

school administration team.

5. I will not share any passwords associated with my GSCS account with anyone except my GSCS

teacher(s). Under no circumstances will the account of another student or GSCS teacher be used.

6. Should I intentionally, or unintentionally, damage a device or use technology improperly, repair/replacement costs will be dealt with individually, between the school and my family/guardian.

*Due to legislation in the United States, many websites, apps or tools state in their terms of services that students must be of a certain age to use the website. Many of these same websites will allow the students to sign up even if they don't meet the age requirements of that website. Therefore, teachers will use their professional discretion to choose appropriate, educationally relevant online tools when using them in the classroom. Students will be explicitly taught any relevant Digital Citizenship skills as they relate to privacy and personal information.
