Background:• There are many problems among the population of Taboshar. One of them is shortage of water. • One more ecological problem, relatedto the geographical and territorial location of the city – it is his not sufficient amenity planting • Basic ecological problem is a presence of the dumps on the

territory of the city and non-balanced ores and uranium disposal areas.

Purpose of chosen Taboshar: Interest of authorities, request of community members, open

appeal to the public was applied

Strategy of Environmental Development of Taboshar city

Activities:1) Sociological interrogation was carried out. In total 803 adult inhabitants has been participated in interrogation. Population themselves indicated ecological problems. Round tables were organized. Results have shown, that city dwellers are not informed enough on ecological conditions and environmental problems of the city. Lack of water is a priority,

2) Results of laboratory analyses have shown that quality of potable water meets the requirement, sewer drains exceed maximum permissible norms, fertility of ground is low enough, and a condition of atmospheric air has worsened in comparison with previous years, but does not exceed maximum permissible norms.

Following objectives were identified as priorities:Objective 1: Provide fresh water to all inhabitants and rehabilitate the drainage systemObjective 2: Improve waste management and controlObjective 3: Decrease in negative influence of industries of a local

economy on environment and health of the population. Objective 4: Increase tree planting and maintenance.Objective 5: Development of system of ecological education of the city

population.Realization of the developed ecological development strategy ofTaboshar is expected during 15 years and includes 3 stages: - A short-term stage 2008-2011; - Intermediate term 2012-2016; - Long-term 2017 – 2021.

It is important to note, that Taboshar became the first city in Republic of Tajikistan which has developed and accepted a

strategy of ecological development.

Achieved Results in Taboshar:• On December 2007 at the session of People’s Deputies Council of Taboshar the strategy of ecological development

of the city was adopted,• More than 1000 local population were involved on developing the

Strategy. Around 15% of total population,• Government financed 800 000 somoni (about 230 000 USD) for

the realization of the strategy in 2008 – 2009 (water supply project),

Achieved results in general Aarhus Centre:- 35 TV programs were created and broadcasting - 10 Information boards were established- 6 round tables and public hearings were conducted- 3 public environmental monitoring were organized
