OVERVIEW OF MAIN PLANS FOR 2010 PER CORE SERVICE & PROJECT
1. Strategic Planning
- Student Counselling had a strategic planning session on 06/11/2009. - Co-ordinators set objectives for 2010 for each program / project - A detailed plan for each of the core services and projects will be submitted to the Dean of Students before the end of 2009.
2. Quality Review
- Had a successful review on 26 June 2009 as preparation for the 2010 institutional audit - To submit a 10-point Quality Improvement Plan before end for 2009 and incorporate identified issues in need of
improvement / attention in our 2010 Strategic Plan
3. Income
- Via the Office of the Dean of Students, Student Counselling will once again push for an approved counseling levy, or combined Student Affairs levy as part of students’ registration fee for 2011 as a 3rd stream income for our department (since it did not materialize during 2009)
- Career counseling fee – SC Bellville Campus will increase during 2010, while it will remain the same on the Cape Town campus.
4. Staffing
- Currently no vacancies (permanent staff) - Budgeted to appoint two intern counseling psychologists. - Budgeted for for sessional services of a psychiatrist due to increased need

- Need remains for a psychologist (permanent, or on contract) to provide counseling / therapeutic services to students at smaller service points.
- Wellington campus in urgent need of a shared receptionist – Student Counselling and Student Health
5. Other HR Matters
- HODs will endeavour to get SC organogram with senior positions (to create career pathing) approved by EM - Updated job descriptions for all departmental positions - Approved job description for senior position - Possible appointment of two current SC staff members in senior positions
6. Staff Development
- Continued active participation in regional SAACDHE meetings and training opportunities (one per term) - As many as possible SC staff members to attend the 2010 SAACDHE conference which will be hosted by the
Western Cape Region at Spier Estate in September. Elisabet on Conference Organizing Committee. - Budget provision for registered psychologists to attend CPD training events - Professional staff to attend monthly peer supervision sessions and case- / research presentations (both
accredited as CPD activities). A roster (Febr – Nov) has been compiled and dates will be confirmed and finalized in Jan 2010.
- Charlene Petersen and Khwezi Nyewe to continue their PhD studies - Organize two self care activities for our staff (one per semester)
7. Intern Psycho-logists and B.Psych students (UWC) training and supervision program
- Still awaits written report by HPCSA evaluators after their site visitation (in April) to ensureour full accreditation as an internship training site.
- Selected two students who will do their 12-month internship in counseling psychology at Student Counselling. HR still has to issue appointment letters.
- A performance plan to be developed for each of the interns - Role of interns with the Wellness Mobile Unit to be monitored & evaluated - Formal agreement with SC proff. Staff to co-supervise / share their expertise & actively contribute to the overall
development of the interns - Two B.Psych students will join us for the 5 month practical part of their training program from July to November. - Established training programs have proven to be successful & will be maintained during 2010
8. Committee Membership
- HODs and staff continue to serve on a number of CPUT committees where they can share their expertise, e.g. HICC Committee, Disability Forum, Legacy Project, Equity Committee, Quality Assurance Committee
- Active participation in the Student Services Council once re-activated - Request will be made to Deans of Faculties for representatives from Student Counselling to attend meetings of
the Teaching and Learning Committees of Faculties to discuss student retention issues and referrals. The exact nature of our involvement will be specified in the Student Academic Development Policy, which will soon be submitted for approval.
9. Physical Facilities
- More appropriate and permanent office for student counsellor on Mowbray campus (?). To negotiate with Dean – Fac of Education before end of ‘09
- Student Counselling on Wellington, Bellville and Mowbray campuses – still in need of appropriate space for group work with students.

10. Research
- Update list of research topics completed by staff of SC during 2009, as well as intended research topics for 2010. - Support productive research output at CPUT by: - Contacting the Unit of post Graduate Research to discuss possible support or presentations for post graduate students (M & D Tech) - Providing support to post graduate students as co-supervisors of dissertations - Develop research capacity by: - Discussing research articles at case presentations - Obtaining research assistance (post grad. students, statistician) for research projects - Arranging a presentation on “How to write a publishable article” for SC staff - Conduct research on students and the impact of counselling & therapy interventions & publish findings, by: - Conducting client satisfaction surveys – all our services / programs - Conducting research groups to conduct research on selected areas - Contacting Sam Henkeman & Rob Woodward re development of profile of CPUT students - Using result of audit of self-help material to develop new material to fill gaps - Presenting at least 2 research papers at 2010 SAACDHE conference - Writing of 1 article to be published in accredited journal - Khwezi Nyewe & Charlene Petersen to continue / finish PhD qualification - Participation in NMMU national research project on peer helping within HEIs
11. Promotion / Marketing
- Produce & distribute a SC Annual Report as both an internal & external marketing tool - Orientate first year students on all CPUT campuses life and create awareness of the services to students
provided by Student Counselling and to issue them with important information re adjusting to the challenges of their transition into HE and on how to ensure their success.
- To promote SC via our exhibition stalls, gazebos and peer helpers during Orientation Week, Career Open Day and Market / Wellness Day events
- To continue to update our formal web page (when needed) - To create intranet link(s) from our formal web page for e.g. an online discussion groups with students / peer

Early Identification of Students at Risk of failure / drop-out: - Develop and implement a process of identifying risk factors that impact on 1st year student retention and
throughput and participate in providing appropriate interventions. Student Academic Development Policy will guide i.t.o. SC’s exact role / responsibility together with that of other stakeholders, e.g. Fundani’s Student Learning, the Disability Unit and Faculties.
Exam Concessions & Academic / Residence Exclusions: - Collaboration with Disability Unit and Student Learning (Fundani) became more formalized during 2009 - Adjusted protocols added to SC Procedures Manual - Maintain this service during 2010 - Increase awareness raising (of this service) amongst students and staff
13. Individual Counselling & Therapy to registered CPUT students
- Continued quality service delivery to students in need on Bellville, Cape Town, Mowbray and Wellington campuses – incl. crisis intervention and trauma debriefing.
- Referrals of students from smaller service points after screening by interns who provide a service on the Wellness Mobile Unit
- Start re-negotiating for one or two contract psychologists to provide a counseling and therapeutic service to students on the smaller service points for 2011 (if still necessary)
- Budgeted for sessional services of a psychiatrist due to increased need for referral of students who present as psychiatric emergencies and not having a medical aid.
- Referral file (for off campus referrals of students) is well resourced with referral details from various institutions, agencies and organizations. Update of file to continue during 2010.
14. Life Skills Development

Non-credit bearing Career Preparedness Workshops to CPUT students: - Maintain the format of the “Jumpstart your Career” Workshops that was developed during 2009 - Continued liaison with Co-op practitioners re timing and promotion of workshops - Continue to facilitate advanced career preparedness topics to class groups upon invitation by Co-op pracitioners,
e.g. dealing with stress in the workplace, building positive workplace relations, assertiveness and time management

16. Wellness Program
- Maintain our 2009 focus of 3 - 4 smaller, but more meaningful wellness events, each emphasising a particular wellness dimension. On Bellville, Cape Town, Mowbray and Wellington campuses.
- Link on to Student Affairs Market Days or dates on the National Health calendar, where possible - Maintain active involvement of peer helpers with promoting and organizing our wellness events - Use SC exhibition stalls to promote our services during the wellness events
17. Peer Helper Program
- Maintain successful program (recruitment, selection, training, supervision and projects) on Wellington, Cape Town, Bellville and Mowbray campuses. The peer helper program empower students by giving them opportunities for personal development and leadership outside the formal classroom environment
- Increase numbers of peer helpers on Mowbray campus - Provide an “outreach approach” to Student Counselling trhough the peer helper program esp. via their active
involvement with Wellness Events - Maintain having incentives for students on the peer helper program
18. Community Outreach
- Maintain successful skills development training project to 30 teachers from previously disadvantaged schools (4 topics, based on need)
- Maintain successful life skills development workshops to learners from four selected (previously disadvantaged) schools.
