Their Phone conversation Andy/Vicki: Nationwide… Is seawater safe?

Nationwide: Where is Bill Nye when you need him?

Andy: I don’t know…. Now could you answer the QUESTION?

Nationwide: Ok… well which one?

Vicki: Look Nationwide we have been out here some time… we have no patience… is seawater safe?

Nationwide: Not sure just yet…. Here let me get Bill Nye on the phone.

Bill Nye: Hello this is Bill Nye how can I help you?

Page 13: Stranded

Conversation 2Nationwide: This is Nationwide, Vicki, and Andy.

Let me give you some background info. Andy and Vicki were having a nice day on their yacht and then they crashed. They have been on the island for about three weeks. They have just finished all their freshwater. There foos supplies is also very low. They thought to themselves…. We need water. They pushed a button that happened to be on the island and got to Nationwide asking us “Is seawater safe?” I didn’t know and called you… can you help us?

Page 14: Stranded

Conversation 3Bill Nye: We this is a very tough one… because you

would need supplies in order to drink the water.

Andy: What kind of supplies?

Bill Nye: Well… when watching survivor I saw them using a cleanish frying pan, and a fire.

Nationwide: You watch Survivor? Did you know Russell got voted out?

Bill Nye: I did happen to see that one… it was…

Vicki: HELLO? Two people stranded on an island here?

Nationwide/Bill Nye: Oh right… so do you have those supplies?

Page 15: Stranded

Conversation 4 Vicki: Well I think we have a frying pan… it is a

little dirty but that will work…Andy: How do you build a fire? I left my boy

Scouts book at home. Bill Nye: OMG your were in Boy Scouts? I was

to…. That is where I got my ninja skills!Andy: NO WAY! That is soooo cool! I bet I will

grow up just like you!Vicki: Really guys. We are stranded and all you

care about is Boy Scouts ?

Page 16: Stranded

Conversation 5 Nationwide: No we care about food. I just saw this

ad for McDonalds… THEY HAVE A 50 piece CHICKEN nuggets!

Bill Nye: That is just amazing… for $9.99 I could feed a family of like 6!

Vicki: Truly amazing. Wow. Impressive. Can you help us or not.

Nationwide: Of course I can… IF BILL WOULD cooperate.

Bill Nye: I am!Nationwide: Are not. Andy: I may only be 10 but I don’t act like I am two

years old like you guys.

Page 17: Stranded

Conversation 6Bill Nye: Fine. I guess I will be the mature one

and answer the question unlike Nationwide… Aren’t they supposed to be on our side?

Nationwide: NO WAY! THAT CROSSED THE LINE BILL! I AM ON THEIR SIDE! Come on you did hear that right guys?

Andy/Vicki: We did… CAN YOUANSWEER THE QUESTION?

Nationwide/Bill Nye: I guess. We need to man up and help them.

Page 18: Stranded

Conversation 7Bill Nye: Ok here is what I know: it has a lot to

do with isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic solutions. Isotonic is when the solutions are the same… equal. Hypertonic is when one of the two solutions have a higher concentrations. Lastly Hypotonic is the opposite of hypertonic… it is when one of the two solutions has a lower concentrations.

Vicki: OK… I think. But I am still really confused… how does that help us?

Bill Nye: I am getting there Vicki… please have a little patience.

Page 19: Stranded

Conversation 8Vicki: Ok I will try. Bill Nye: Good, now as I was saying sea water

is almost three times the amount of salt then in the water. Table salt and the salt in the water are very different. Table salt, although can be bad, will not kill you. The water could result in seizures, unconsciousness and possibly brain damage. The only way that I know how to make sure that the water is safe is if you boil the water… this will make the salt go down and you able to drink it.

Page 20: Stranded

Conversation 9 Bill Nye: You could have stomach aches… if you have

sensitive stomach… hopefully this doesn’t happen to you. Well does that answer your question?

Andy: Well I guess. But where does hypertonic and hypotonic and isotonic fit in to this?

Nationwide: Well Bill, guess that must be to hard for you to figure out… haha I win! I will just need to call another person…. Um… What do you guys think bout Bill Gates? He could come and find you guys.

Vicki: Nationwide… cut it out.. I think he was going to finish it… just be patience like I am.

Page 21: Stranded

Conversation 10 Nationwide:… Fine.Andy: Good… Bill take it home! Bill Nye: Thanks Andy! The water is

hypertonic to the fish that live in the waters. Vicki: So that means that it has a high

concentration right? Bill Nye: Yes that would be correct. So I guess

this lesson in hypertonic. Hypotonic, and isotonic is…

Everyone: DONE!
