Common Core Standards – Grade 1 – Speaking and Listening • Build on others’ talk in conversations by responding to the comments of others through multiple exchanges. (SL.1.1.B) • Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly. (SL.1.4) • Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation. (SL.1.6) Setting the scene Show the students a picture of the background they will use. Ask the children to tell you what they like to do during the season. Ask students what the weather is like. Ask them about the clothes they wear. Ask students if there are special holidays they celebrate in this season. Backgrounds • Spring – Swans, rabbits, bird with branch • Summer – Beach scene • Fall – Scarecrow with apples and leaves • Winter – Snow with snowman Building the story Ask the children to build a scene showing the activities they like to do in this season. Be sure to include their favorite thing to do during this season. Tell the children they have 10-15 minutes to build their ideas using only the materials located in the bin in front of them. While students are building, walk around the room asking students to share what is happening in their models. Reflecting Ask students to explain what is happening in their models. Ask children if this is their favorite season and why or why not. Ask selected groups to share their models with the entire group. Grades: Pre-K-1 Tip: You might want to put up several pictures that show activities of the season. Tip: Having the background cards already in the holders for each pair of students will cut down on building time. Tip: Have students put bricks not used back into the bin when it is time to share the models. Tip: Ask students to compare this season with the season that just ended or that will occur next.
