Page 2: Storage devices

Storage devices are referred to as storage, storage media, or storage medium, a storage device is any hardware device capable of holding information. There are two storage devices used in computers; a primary storage device such as computer RAM and a secondary storage device such as a computer hard drive. The secondary storage could be a removable , internal, or external storage.

There are two types of primary storage:

Random Access Memory (RAM) – Volatile primary storage

Read Only Memory – Non-volatile primary storage

Types of Read Only Memory (ROM)

Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM)

Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EPROM)

Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM)

SECONDARY STORAGE DEVICES .

They are referred to as external memory and auxiliary storage, secondary storage is a storage medium that holds information until it is deleted or overwritten regardless if the computer has power. For example, a floppy disk drive and hard drive are both good examples of secondary storage devices. As can be seen by the picture below there are three different storage on a computer, although primary storage is accessed much faster than secondary storage because of the price and size limitations secondary storage is used with today's computers to store all your programs and your personal data.

FLOPPY DRIVE:- The smallest and most portable of all the storage devices usually holds about 1.44 MB of storage.

A compact disc, also known as a CD, is a plastic optical disc with a metalized surface that is used for digital audio storage. Compact Disc (CD) can hold 740 MB.

The DVD is an acronym for Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc, and it refers to a type of optical disc used for storing data and video content. The capacity of a DVD is at least seven times greater than a compact disc and provides enough room for a full-length feature film.

External storage hardware device developed by Data Robotics that connects to a computer using USB,

Fire wire, eSATA, or iSCSI and allows a user to connect up to four or eight SATA hard drives into it. The picture is an example of what this device looks like.
