Plasmodium falciparum, the cause of the only fatal type of malaria. is responsible for 95% of al1 malaria-related clinical attacks in sub-Saharan Africa, the region that registers 90% of the world's malaria-specific mortality. In the affected developing countries, pregnancy-associated malaria (PAM) is a major public health issue for women and children (two overarching issues of strategic importance in FP7).
