Stop Motion AnimationGetting started in stop motion animation
The basic tools needed are:• a camera (webcam, digital video
camera or some digital still cameras)
• a tripod (to keep the camera steady)
• software on a computer (some free ones are mentioned here)
• some character models• a good light source
The cameraThe camera you use depends on the software you choose. You might choose from the following:
• a simple webcam connected to your computer• adigitalvideo(DV)camera(andafirewirecable,toconnecttoyourpcor
mac)• a still digital camera
Most animation software uses a ‘live feed’ view from a webcam or through a firewirecablefromasuitableDVcamera.Itallowsyoutocontrolthecamerafrom the computer to take pictures (frames.) Some newer DV cameras do not havefirewireportsandarethereforeunsuitable.Still digital cameras will not give a ‘live view’ so will only work with certain animation software.
Very easy to use software for use with webcams or connected DV cameras.
TripodIfyoudon’twantyouranimation to look shaky, your camera must stay completely still. Therefore, a tripod will be very useful. There are many full size tripods and mini tripods available. A bigger, heavier tripod will be harder to accidently nudge.
You could always use a pile of books!
