Dear Trade Customers,

Welcome to our 2009/10 price catalogue, which I hope you will find useful and informative.

We have taken the decision this year not to print a list, but rather to offer this online which saves paper, postage and the environment in one fell swoop and certainly helps us keep our prices as stable as possible, avoiding increases where we can against the backdrop of increasing transport and goods costs and worsening exchange rates around the world!

It remains our intention to issue one price list per annum, however last year this was disrupted by the unexpected duty increase in December, so we will have to wait and see what the government has in store for us, and the drinks trade as a whole in the year ahead!

You will notice that our 25+ duty paid and delivered case rate has now been replaced by a new rate offered on orders over 20 dozen in bond and delivered. This offers good saving over our 10+ dozen duty paid and delivered rate as we are able to pass benefit of not financing duty not to mention the reduced delivery costs. It is possible to receive this rate on orders required duty paid, with the duty and vat invoiced separately on a proforma basis or charged to your deferment account.

We have also launched our new website which is designed to be used in conjunction with the list providing as many tasting notes, press reviews and photos as possible. The site will be continually updated with all the news on vintages, new releases, offers and a little light banter too! We have also added a ‘top stockists’ section on each winery page which will be kept refreshed from time to time so don’t feel hard done by if you are not currently featured. Please do take advantage of it and do by all means give us any feedback.

As I write this I have been watching the bright yellow oilseed rape highlighted by the sun through my office window and musing on how good weather does help lift everyone’s mood, so lets hope the positive feelings about our economy continue building over the coming summer months. I hope you all have a busy summer and a productive 2009.

Kind regards,Tim & Justin

Kalleske, Barossa When asked why Troy became the first winemaker in the family after six generations of grape growers, he says it’s down to being in a warm dry winery rather than the out in the elements! But to take this step was a bold move rather than a lazy one given the Kalleske family had built a reputation as the most respected of growers, supplying Penfolds with fruit since the mid 1880s from their farm in Greenock.

Following a degree in oenology, Troy, winner of the coveted Barons of the Barossa winemaker of the year award, worked for Penfolds and then subsequently Southcorp before making a few barrels of Kalleske with his brother Tony in their garage. The first wines were released from the 2001 vintage and received international acclaim. The Kalleske name has reached cult status on home soil and is becoming very hot property around the world.

The family’s 120 acres of vineyards are certified organic and farmed using the best sustainable practices leading to wines that really demonstrate the terrior of Greenock.

Massena, Barossa

During the harvest the Massena winery takes on an almost magnetic draw for young winemakers and visiting English importers alike as there is always plenty of banter, cold Coopers and games of ‘barrel bung’ Cricket to be played as the sun sets behind gum trees laden with noisy Galahs. When sitting out on the step with Dan and Jaysen discussing the poor form of our respective national Cricket teams the world seems a pretty perfect place!

Dan Standish, ex Torbreck, and Jaysen Collins, ex Turkey Flat, set us Massena together in 2000 with the aim of producing premium Barossa wines from traditional varieties. Sourcing fruit from very old vineyards planted by early pioneers, Massena’s wines are made using traditional winemaking techniques such as open fermentation and basket pressing.

Teusner, Ebenezer When I first visited the Teusner boys just at the end of the 2007 harvest they had Shiraz and Grenache bubbling away in just about every available container! It has been a really hard vintage with everything coming ripe at the same time following a horrendous heat spike with ten consecutive days over 45 degrees, however Kym and Michael were cool calm and collected, even if they were running on their last reserves of energy!

Kym Teusner came to wine after working in a number of hotels and conference centers both in Australia and the USA. He studied oenology at Roseworthy followed by stints at Torbreck and Veritas before setting up Teusner. Teusner Wines was born when Kym and his viticulturalist brother-in-law Michael Page bought the fruit from a condemned 75 year old bush vine Grenache vineyard, allowing the vineyard to see another year. Using some other small parcels of fruit from the Barossa, the Teusner label was launched with the 2002 Joshua of which only one hundred and sixty-five cases were produced with the Avatar launched a year later after spending time in barrel.

Kym is an incredibly talented winemaker and they are without doubt destined for further great things, but above all they are top guys doing what they love most and having plenty of fun along the way! Not many wineries can boast purpose built stubby holders on each fermentor for late night pump overs!

The Standish Wine Company, Vine Vale

The Standish Wine Company was created in 1999 when Dan Standish sourced a small parcel of old vine Shiraz from his parents’ vineyard in the heart of the Barossa Valley. The 96 year old vines are planted on the typical sand over clay soil profile which is characteristic of Vine Vale, the sub-region of the Barossa. With Dan’s enormous passion for the wines of the Rhône Valley in the south of France, it was a natural evolution that the wines made would reflect their intrinsic style. As such, the second wine in the assemblage, The Relic, is a Shiraz and Viognier co-fermented wine, as made in Côte Rôtie.

The wines from the Standish Wine Company are only produced in tiny quantities and get snapped up as soon as they reach our shores.

Laughing Jack, Greenock Owned by another branch of the Kalleske family and made by Shawn Kalleske and Mick Schroeter this small winery was set up in 1999. The grapes are taken from a parcel of vines planted on red sandy loam on a broken clay base and fringed by blue and red gum trees. These gums provide a home to the Kookaburra or Laughing Jack, which gives its name to this classic wine.

Although we are out of stock of the 2004 there might be some still available from the stockists while we will be shipping the 2005 shortly – keep an eye on our news letters for the exact arrival date!

Buckshot, Heathcote, Victoria

Rob Peebles started making wine in 1993, working with the legendary Mick Morris in Rutherglen, and joined Domaine Chandon in 1997. In 1999 Rob secured the fruit from a 60 year old Shiraz block (the oldest in Heathcote), dry grown and cropped between 1 and 2 tons to the acre. In 2001 they added the fruit from a younger vineyard and the Buckshot Shiraz was released. Total production is 400 cases.

Umamu, Margaret River Umamu still feels like a new addition to our list joining us in May 2008 straight into the maelstrom of media driven financial depression! However, the wines have risen above this and gained a strong following amongst those in the know!

Matthew Jukes described how it had gone straight into his “hit list of wines from Margaret River to covet” in his Taste Food and Wine 2009, while Steven Spurrier chose the Chardonnay for his Decanter Magazine New World Chardonnay masterclass!

The vineyards which were planted back in 1978 were bought by the Saw family when they fell in love with the area, with Charmaine Saw taking up the running of the property and wines being made by Bruce Dukes of Piero and Rubicon Estate fame.

This is a true family adventure with the fantastically food and wine passionate Saw family moving between their home in Penang, Malaysia and Margaret River to experience every season and stage in the vineyard.

2005 was their maiden vintage with the wines showing wonderful character and finesse. The 2006 Chardonnay is an absolute star produced in small quantities.

Merricks Creek, Mornington Peninsula

This amazing 2 hectare vineyard was established by Peter and Georgina Parker in 1998 with the help of Pinot Noir legend Gary Farr. Its small area is planted with a sophisticated selection of clones including the famous Calera rootstock which has been close planted here at 500mm spacing. The wines are now made by Nick Farr at his state of the art By Farr winery located at Bannockburn.

Auntsfield Estate, Marlborough The property was bought by the Cowleys in the early 90’s when it was still an unplanted cattle farm, however when they researched the property they discovered it had actually produced wine from 1873 through to 1925 which made it the first commercial winery in Marlborough planted some 100 years before anywhere else! They planted blocks of the property with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, taking real care to select the best plots for each. They now have around 40h planted on north facing slopes on Greywacke rock overlaid with fine clay soil which is wind-blown over many thousands of years from the valley floor. This fantastic terroir gives the wine a fine minerality, texture and definition.

In the early 2000s both sons became interested in the project, with first Ben giving up his career as a film camera man, retraining in viticulture and moving his young family from Auckland to the property, and then Luc completing his training in oenology, the family decided to release some wine under the original label, Auntsfield Estate. Since the first release the wines have attracted great attention from consumers and press alike, as the wines offer more complexity and minerality than many of their neighbors.

The Heritage 2005 was made from the smallest bunches/berries selected fruit from the Hawk Hill vineyard which is planted on very old soil in the Southern Valleys, due south of Blenheim and the Wairau river system. Vinified in small barriques, turned on end with their ends removed to make improvised mini fermentors and hand plunged and individually fermented with wild yeast to directly mirror the way their founder David Herd would have made his wines 100 years before. This wine is a living memorial to the founder of the Marlborough wine industry.

Chard Farm, Central Otago

Mention to Chard Farm to any of the many visitors to Central Otago and they will be just as familiar with its breath-taking entrance which takes you along the precipitous side of Kawarau River where scenes from The Lords of the Rings were filmed as they will be with its classic Pinots! Indeed it sees hundreds of dedicated thrill seekers visit its cellar door during summer and winter alike, either taking a break before a bungee jump or heli-skiing trip.

Chard Farm was established in 1987 by Motueka brothers Rob and Greg Hay. Rob having studied winemaking for several years in Germany returned to New Zealand to search for the “terroir” that best emulated the cool continental climate and soils of Burgundy and Alsace, after a long search and carefully evaluating the peculiarities of grape growing in Central Otago they selected the Chard Farm site.

The region of Central Otago has it all; breath taking scenery, more adrenalin sports than you knew existed, fantastic atmosphere and amazing wines.

The J&J Chardonnay is of particular note as it is no longer made and comes from the last vintage.

The Tiger, Normally only available in a few selected restaurants and the winery cellar door is a single vineyard wine made and named in honour of Keith “Tiger” Thompson, the charismatic cellar door manager at Chard Farm for over ten years who sadly died in 2004. It has exotic red berry fruit with mild spice and earthy tones on the nose and complex fruit flavours and velvety tannins through the palate giving a fine, persistent and balanced finish. Only tiny production and only in great years.

Rabbit Ranch, Central Otago

Sheep and Rabbits coexisted on the land for some time but the sheep couldn’t keep up with the nocturnal activity of the rabbits and were hopelessly outnumbered – they were driven off the land and were last seen heading north. The owner of the Rabbit Ranch – Mr McGregor tried a number of measures to rid the land of the rabbits at the turn of the century, but was unsuccessful. In the end he decided to plant some vines and make wine.

The vineyard fell into decline after the Second World War until direct descendants of Mr McGregor – Warren and Betty McGregor decided to replant the vineyard, and as they say – the rest is history...

Rabbits still run wild on the vineyard and fuelled by high altitude Pinot grapes, some are reputed to be the size of ponies – but that could be another tall story...

The Rabbit is not so much wine as a phenomenon! With a cult following in its natural habitat of New Zealands best bars, wine shops and Central Otago ski huts, Warren McGregor is almost a deity and his every move or word is analyzed by a gang of bunny suited followers! Here at Stokes we are certainly excited by his outstanding quality Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris and continually delighted by his wonderfully nutty antics!

The Pinot Gris or White Rabbit is new to our shores so be sure (sorry) to try it soon, and pay a visit to their website or facebook page for regular bunny updates….

PORTUGAL

Churchill’s Port, Douro

Although Churchill’s is considered a baby of the Port trade both in scale and age, indeed it was only founded in 1981, it has its roots deeply imbedded into quality Port history. Indeed Johnny Graham’s family used to own the famous Graham’s Port until it was sold in 1970. He and his Wife, Caroline (maiden name Churchill) created the company when Johnny left a job at Taylor’s where he had been in the winemaking team, having spent the years before that working for Cockburns.

When asked how he would explain the Churchill’s style, Johnny draws from his drinking experiences when he describes it as having the finesse and elegance of Grahams, the dryness and acidity of Cockburns and the structure and balance of Taylor’s. This style has been reinforced since 1999 with the purchase of two grade A properties, Quinta da Gricha and Quinta da Rio, which bring further terrior and depth to the blends.

The scale of Churchill’s allows Johnny and his team to produce really exciting hand crafted traditional wines, using the methods that many houses are now unable due to their time consuming nature!

In this list we have introduced a new 20 Year Old Tawny in a 50cl bottle (all bottles come gift boxed). With Churchill’s passing its 28th birthday Johnny is now happy with the reserves he has built up and is now, for the first time, able to blend a 20 YO he is delighted to put his name on.

Alongside the new 20 Year Old, in its very special bottle design we are also moving the Dry White and the 10 Year Old into the same 50cl bottle. I am sure you will be pleased with the move.

Churchill Estates Douro Wine 2009 is certainly a very exciting year for Churchill Estates as they are releasing nothing less than three new wines from the outstanding 2007vintage: a wonderful Reserva, which is made from a strict selection of parcels from Churchill’s two key properties and given a slightly extended period of oak aging; the Touriga Nacional which is made with fruit predominantly from the planting at Gricha made after the property was bought in 1999; and finally the wonderful Grande Reserva which I think will become regarded as a classic from the region drawing fruit from all the key properties including some old vineyards in the Douro Superior.

These are the result of some really hard work from Johnny and his young team, who have further improved the vineyards at Gricha, demonstrating the unique terrior it has to offer while also working with fruit from the Douro Superior.

The renaissance of Douro wines continues to capture the imagination of much of the worlds press and interested wine lovers and Churchill’s development in this area continues apace with the introduction of these new wines.

Something really exciting is happening in this region and I cannot urge you enough to explore and taste these wines.

Paolo Leo, Salento

Founded in 1989 by Paolo and his wife Roberta on the site of the Vinagri winery, they have continued to work with traditional methods while improving quality in both the winery and vineyard. The vineyards are worked in the most natural way possible with full respect for the environment to encourage true terrior in the wines.

Value is an often overused word in todays world, with just about everything from washing powder to German cars shouting about the value they are able to offer! However this cracking Italian pair really DOES offer great summer drinking at unbeatable value.

Château Mignan, Minervois La Liviniere

A property owned and run by Rugby nut Christian Mignan, the winemaker at well know Château Vaugelas in Corbieres. Our latest visit to his winery, built in his spare-time, finds Christian on crutches having snapped his Achilles tendon some weeks before. After some plenty of gentle banter about England vs France (little did he know what the final score line would be when they met a couple of weeks later at Twickenham) we settle into tasting his latest vintages accompanied by plenty of fresh bread and pate!

Located in the pretty village of Siran, in between Pépieux and Livinière, with vineyards planted on surface gravel with very deep clay and limestone subsoil, Mignan makes very classic wines with great depth and complexity.

The Pech Quisou wines are approachable, soft and fruit focused with good balancing structure. Both are blends of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault with the Rose made by bleeding the vats, and the red spending twelve months in three year old, and older, French oak barrels.

Château Saint-Jacques d’Albas, Minervois Laure

A spur of the moment visit to one of Bordeaux’s great chateau more than thirty years earlier, while working for a bank in Paris, had enflamed Graham’s passion for wine and had him vowing that one day he would own a great property and produce an exceptional wine. So throughout a successful career, which took him to many parts of world, he never lost that clear objective and continued to increase his wine knowledge, not to mention his personal cellar, to help him reach his goal.

So following his retirement in 2000, his search for a suitable property began in earnest. He was keen to concentrate on the Bordeaux satellite appellations, in particular Bergerac, but his French wife Beatrice was determined to look further south with its better climate and relatively undiscovered vinous wonders. Needless to say Beatrice won and in early 2001 they bought the run-down 215 acre property, Chateau Saint-Jacques d’Albas, twenty minutes from the historic city of Carcassonne within the Minervois appellation.

Although the property was fantastically beautiful with its winemaking roots going right back to Roman times, Graham and Beatrice were not going to be able to relax into a retirement spent on the sunny terrace as the previous owners had allowed things to crumble a little, satisfied selling their grapes to the local cave co-op. So a massive program of rebuilding and regeneration started which continues today. The first wave of investment was in the 72 acres of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Mourvedre vines, which needed extensive remedial work including tough re-pruning, homeopathic mineral treatments and organic sheep manure to re-invigorate the soils. Next on the list was the building of a brand new winery, with state of the art equipment to support the efforts of their Australian winemaker, Richard Osbourne and give them a five-thousand case capacity to aim towards.

The property produces five wines; a Vin de Pays, Petite Saint-Jacques, from vines that fall outside the appellation; a tank-aged Domain wine; a Chateau wine from oak-aged Syrah; a super-cuvee, La Chapelle, from the oldest of Syrah wines and a delicious summer Rose.

True to his pledge of all those years before, Graham and Chateau Saint-Jacques d’Albas are producing very exciting wines which pair the wonderful terrior of the property with elegance, concentration and supple sweet fruit, a style that has won them many followers around the world and perhaps toughest of all within the local region!

Domaine Pierre Naigeon, Gevrey Chambertin

When googling Pierre Naigeon we were delighted and amused to find a picture of him in Australia demonstrating some good Burgundian low-tech methods by plunging into a fermentor in his boxers , up to his neck to extract maximum colour, infront of a group of slightly bewildered Aussie winemakers! There was no doubt that this guy had to join our portfolio! His love and passion for traditional hand crafted Burgundy won us over in an instant!

Pierre cultivates 11 hectares of vineyard around the villages of Gevrey Chambertin and Chambolle Musigny including five 1er Crus in Gevrey and three Grand Crus. The Domaine can trace its roots back five generations to Fernand Naigeon who worked as a cooper in Gevrey Chambertin in 1875.

Today Pierre Naigeon makes wines with wonderful pure fruit character, definition and style.
