Welcome to the 26th SIRF

The first weekend in August is always a great time to be outdoors in Stockton and a chance to discover and rediscover all that is special about the town and the spirit and vibrancy that SIRF brings to Stockton.

SIRF marks its return to the Riverside where we open the Festival with Theater Titanick’s show of metal, fire and music, Furnace Symphony, and end there with our stunning finale Compagnie Off’s Girafes. You could bump into roving Rhinos on the High Street, visit the creche for baby vegetables on Trinity Green and enjoy the passion of fire and tango in Parish Gardens. We’re welcoming back old friends to the Festival; Bad Taste Company, Motionhouse and Pif-Paf, and introducing new artists; Compagnie Retouramont, Emke Idema and Pere Faura. And, of course, we have our Community Carnival filling the High Street with Stories of the World!

Join us for another unstoppable, un-missable and unbelievable weekend of fantastic festival fun – we might be 26 this year but there is no sign of us growing up yet!

The SIRF Team

We’d love to know what you think so please join us on Facebook and Twitter.

FestivAL LAuNCHtheAter titAnick (germAny) FuRnACE SYMPHOnY A uK PREMIEREThe festival launch celebrates a return to the Riverside in a spectacular flame-filled fashion!

Theater Titanick are no strangers to SIRF – last seen re-enacting the sinking of the Titanic, this time they are back with a bang or a blast to be more precise! Furnace Symphony takes inspiration from the drama and alchemy of steel making – a fitting celebration of our rich steel-industry heritage.

This is a symphony with a twist created by an orchestra like no other - the six musicians don’t sit down on comfortable chairs but take their place between three towers of fire. They don’t play the violin or the trumpet but archaic instruments from the Titanick factory and this wouldn’t be Titanick if the wondrous steel constructions didn’t develop a life of their own. Driven by vanity and rivalry, the gifted musicians not only play the musical score with virtuosity, but also play on the entire range of human feelings. Comic scenes are followed by moments of thrilling suspense. The tension rises and one begins to wonder whether all this can ever end well?

The performance culminates in ethereal song, flames and fireworks and in a touchingly poetic way they actually make steel ring out.

Gravitational Waves will take place in Swallow Yard (former Swallow Hotel Service Yard). This usually hidden space will become a festival venue for the weekend with the uK premiere of this breathtaking show.

A sculptural framework attached to the facade of the building provides the dancers with a unique performance space to explore the interaction between architecture, sound, projected images and movement. Dancers animate the space in multiple dimensions where the movement is not only seen but heard as the sculpture transposes their every move into sound.

Audience numbers will be limited within Swallow Yard so please get there early for a show you don’t want to miss! Access to Swallow Yard is from Tower Street (next to the entrance for Castlegate Car park)

Flex dAnce compAny (uk) PARKEDA SIRF COMMISSIOnInnovative dance theatre performed by Durham based Flex Dance Company, a group of leading learning disabled artists. Parked is Flex Dance Company’s first piece created specifically for outdoor audiences, building on their reputation for engaging dynamic dance work in traditional theatre spaces.

Blending in with their surroundings, three inanimate objects form the scene: a park bench, a lamp post and a rubbish bin. Eight performers animate the scene through a series of short stories using dynamic movements and the subtlety of ambient sound effects. For each of them the scene is host to a memory, a place that holds significance in their life.

BilBoBAsso (FrAnce) POlARSparks fly (literally) in Parish Gardens as Bilbobasso combine bold fire with the intensity and infinite tenderness of Argentinean tango. When a mysterious young woman and a ruthless gangster meet, their attraction seems destined for tragedy, but can the dance save her?

Descend into a world of dangerous cabaret, where lovers give themselves to desire and the flames of passion light up the night.

This captivating collection is inspired by sound artist Max Eastley’s explorations into Aeolian (wind driven) instruments, from their mythology and curious history, to contemporary explorations of them. Six of the finest sound artists around today (Mark Anderson, Jony

Easterby, Kathy Hinde, Dan Fox, nathaniel Robin Mann and Mike Blow) have joined Max and each created their own instruments that harness the wind.

Their instruments form a unified experience made up of an ever changing sound world that captures the imagination.

motionhouse CAPTIvEBreathtaking, highly energetic and intoxicating: four dancers perform inside a large steel cage. Disorientated and shaken, they use their skill and instinct to survive, creating a dazzling performance at breakneck speed.

Captive is inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem The Panther and considers how a human, like an animal, can be plucked from normal life and plunged into captivity. A dazzling blend of dance and aerial work.

Captive is created with support from Six Summer Saturdays and Swindon Dance.

les enFAnts terriBles IMAGInARY MEnAGERIERoll up, roll up, roll up. The most magnifical, tremendible and fantasticulous travelling circus arrives on Stockton High Street, recalling Stockton’s tradition of welcoming a circus to the town each Winter. The caravan of curiosities has arrived to entertain, amuse and beguile you. Packed with vaudeville, circus, puppets, dance, music and magic, a cast of professional charlatans will regale you with tales of wit, virtue and courage, all loosely based upon Aesop’s fables and rendered with a bizarre theatricality all of their own.

piF-pAF SOMETHInG TO HOlDWith storms on every horizon, three exiled souls collide in a no man’s land, all looking for more, one from our world and two from far away. Pushed to keep moving they adventure through cockeyed and transforming landscapes, getting entangled, propelled and lifted to new heights. But what happens when inner demons come out? Will they pull together or will they pull apart, or will they offer each other Something To Hold?

A fast paced tale spun on a thrilling new aerial sculpture by Pif-Paf, within a transforming mechanical world of action, metal and rope.

rAg And Bone BOnEYARD TAlESFigures spring to life from a wasteland of discarded rubbish on Stockton High Street! This is the Bone Yard – a scrap heap, or your back yard; constantly changing and growing. Rag and Bone dance, delight and despair in a world drowning in junk. But are they alone? Did that rubbish move? And are the ‘Bone Yard Tales’ really a series of myths telling of the destructive power and addictive nature of waste, or just stories spun by Rag to distract Bone from bashing bits of metal all the time?

Bone Yard Tales’ combination of physical theatre, puppetry and live music revels in the delight of transformation.

tilted productionsFRAGIlETwo tight-wire artists, two dancers, a trampoline duo and a dancing clown search for the beautiful in the fragile and the fragile in the seemingly beautiful.

Fragile’s architectural set creates the illusion of the performance being on a rooftop. Imagine a flat concrete roof where someone has put up a garden with a few plants in pots and some grass. The piece will expose the microcosm of human

activity taking place in this garden. It will look at the lives of those who visit the roof terrace and explore what the garden means to them.

While intricate relationships tenderly and brutally entwine, a strange transformation happens to the garden itself enhancing the sense of a warped reality and other worldliness unfolding.

A SIRF COMMISSIOnWe are delighted to welcome Bad Taste Company back to SIRF with their re-imagining of Goethe’s “Faust” on Stockton High Street. Drinking, gambling, womanising, and general debauchery make the Speakeasy a perfect place for a man to lose his soul, as we see when Faust is manipulated, to both comic and tragic effect, into a deal with the devil where his very soul hangs in the balance. Told through the intense physical and narrative dance style that Bad Taste Company have become renowned for, ‘Faust’ features a unique fusion of world-class breaking combined with lindy Hop, Charleston, and swinging big band music of the roaring 20’s that taps into the spirit of gangsters, bootleggers, gamblers, flappers, and hep cats of the time.

Supported by Dance City and Tees valley Dance.

During SIRF13 there will be some disruption to public transport and car parking in the centre of town – the website will have all the latest info.
