Serving Stockbridge and surrounding towns & villages - visit our new website at: www.stockbridgeforum.co.uk
The Stockbridge Forum contains facts, views, opinions, statements, recommendations, advertisements and other content and links to external websites not owned or controlled by the magazine. The Stockbridge Forum takes reasonable efforts to include accurate, current information on its pages, but make no warranties or representations as to the accuracy, safety or value of the published items that are displayed. No liability or responsibility can be taken for errors or omissions in magazine content. The Stockbridge Forum magazine content does not necessarily reflect the views, opinions or recommendations of its creators and any reliance upon its content is taken at the user’s sole risk. Adverts designed by Forum Publications remain the magazine's legal ownership.
Welcome to the Stockbridge Forum. We have changed the face of the
Forum considerably over recent months and hope that you enjoy the new additions to the magazine.
Within the pages you will now find a monthly recipe, a children’s activity corner (this month is Dinosaur month!).
We would like to include a local walk each month and would therefore greatly appreciate submissions from our readers. Do you have a favourite local walk that you would like to share? Please send it via email or post and you may see it in print!
Likewise, we would appreciate local photographs from keen photographers that would make an exciting front cover. Do you have an eye for a beautiful picture? If so, please send us your digital files to [email protected]. We can’t guarantee that we will use any of the images sent to us, but if we do, they will be credited on this page.
The Forum team are constantly working hard to provide a good quality, informative and interesting magazine for our readers.
We aim to include as many local events and news items as possible – so if you have a bric-a-brac sale; fete; class or exhibition etc. that you would like advertised for free in our magazine, please contact us at the earliest opportunity and we will include it in our News and Events section.
In order to make using the Forum easier for you, we have created town and village guides
welcometo the Stockbridge Forum
so you can see at a glance what is happening in your local area during the coming month.
Forum PhilosophyIt’s quite simple really… The
Forum is your magazine, your voice for the local community. We are lucky enough to live in an area with a strong community spirit, but we all know that its continued success relies upon easy and regular communication of everything we need to know. Our local businesses rely on our continued support to prosper and so we seek to keep our advertising rates extremely competitive. For our local clubs and societies to flourish we publish their details and news free of charge. And for those messages to reach as many people in the community as possible we work hard to ensure The Forum is a free magazine.
So we hope you find something of value or something of interest within the pages of The Forum. We are continually developing the magazine and rely on your input to make it work. Let us know what you think, what you’d like to see in The Forum. Working together we can all participate in building a fantastic forum for our local community!

Here's a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are) 1. When you say 'room' or 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ish. But we don't quibble if the areas are a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes us to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount rates is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tv's. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden' extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay (VAT is included).

Local WalksDISTAnCE: Approx 7 miles DIFFICulTy: Moderate rOAD WAlKInG: Considerable
The Danebury Longstock Loop
Walking in a clockwise direction from
Danebury Hill this fantastic walk leads you down in to the Test Valley, crossing numerous tributaries of the River Test at the village of Longstock, along the picturesque Stockbridge High Street and back up Houghton Down. From the impressive Iron Age fort, along leafy lanes and tree lined river banks to the bustle of town and the expansive views of the downland this walk really does give you four distinct flavours of rural Hampshire all in one go!
Danebury Iron Age hill fort was built some 2500 years ago and occupied for 500 years until the arrival of the Romans. It is one of the most studied hill forts in Europe and is of course worthy of a visit in its own right. A ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ since 1979 it is open all day, every day; entry is free and dogs are welcome.
Starting from Danebury Hill car park walk back out to the road and turn right. After about 200 yards you reach the junction with Spitfire Lane to the right. Take the byway to your left which
takes you along a typical English leafy lane bringing you in to the Test Valley and, as it becomes Church Road, the charming village of Longstock.
When you arrive at the T-junction by St Mary’s church turn left and then turn right beside the Peat Spade Pub, along The Bunny. This takes you alongside and over several streams that make up the River Test, including one with a charming thatched fishing hut and replica eel traps.
Just before crossing the bridge over the disused Test Valley Railway and reaching the road you can see ahead, take the narrow footpath to the right which takes you down to walk along the old railway trackbed. After about a mile the path brings you on to the A3057 Leckford Lane.
Taking care, turn right and walk along the grassy verge of the road for 100 yards to the roundabout, then follow the grassy verge to the right and along to the next roundabout by White
Hart Inn. Turn right here to walk into Stockbridge along the High Street, where you can explore the wealth of independent shops and stop for a cup of tea!
After passing Carberry Guest House at the western end of the High Street, bear off to the left going uphill along Roman Road and then straight along the narrow path that climbs Meon Hill. Just before reaching Houghton Down Farm on the left, look out for a stile in the hedge on the right. Cross here and follow the right hand edge of the small plantation to the next stile. Carefully cross the A30 and the stile opposite; this takes you in to a large field enjoying unrivalled open views of Houghton Down.
As you follow the right hand path ignore the stile on your right and keep to the main path, eventually bearing left to a grassy track leading to the gate and stile. From here turn immediately right in to Spitfire Lane, a wide hedged track, and follow this for three quarters of a mile, climbing Blackstoke Hill back to the road junction. From here you turn left back towards Danebury Hill and your start point.

‘Money for Old Rope’ – the Art of UpcyclingStockbridge Gallery, 13th June – 16th July
clothing retailers
A thing of beauty is a joy forever’, wrote the poet John Keats in his
famous Ode on a Grecian Urn. Contemporary art can also arouse the same emotion, and often, surprisingly, through the use of materials not immediately associated with beauty.
Stockbridge Gallery (Dogs in Art) has commissioned a series of unusual dog sculptures by Dominic Gubb, an award winning artist who uses everyday materials that would normally be thrown away, such as plastic carrier bags, fast food packaging and old school climbing ropes, to create unique sculptures of ‘Man’s best friend’. Dominic Gubb’s sculptures are a witty example of the art of ‘upcycling’, whereby the artist unlocks the promise of reclaimed objects; taking the discarded and the devalued and altering its appearance and purpose to create
desirable, inspirational art. His work developed initially from experimenting with recycled plastic as a sculpting material and it shows a passion for form, combined with wit and humour. There is also a serious underlying aim of stimulating a new appreciation of the familiar, seen in an unexpected way.
The sculptures caught the attention of Victoria Armstrong, curator of the Stockbridge Gallery in Hampshire which specialises in dogs in art, and she approached Doming Gubb to create an exciting and thought provoking exhibition of sculptures of ‘upcycled’ dogs. A selection of dog paintings by other gallery artists will also be on display.
The exhibition, ‘Money for Old Rope’, runs from 13th June to 16th July. Further details are available at www.dogsinart.com

King's Somborne Primary School - Our best memories
Year 6 are beginning to think about the end of their time at King’s
Somborne Primary. They are attending induction days at their new secondary schools, making plans for leavers assembly and producing a show. This year, we held an in-school competition for them with the prize of the best article being published in the Stockbridge Forum. It was so close and 2 were chosen. Here are extracts from their reports:
Oliver Waggot on his time at Stone Farm, Devon (year 5 residential). "We had endless amounts of activities. We went for a lovely walk on Dartmoor (dodging the bogs) and while we were there we were told a myth about a witch and an elf. Mucking out the animals was fun because you really started to bond with them. On the way home, we stopped at the Fleet Air Army museum, which was really interesting. I was amazed with the simulator because it really

felt like you were flying in the air! A lot of funny things happened too. Once when someone closed the door in the night, an electric toothbrush fell off the sink and started to buzz. Leo fell over everything – even the dog! Colin, the tour guide for Dartmoor, fell into the bog but the funniest memory was when the alpaca spat at Emily but she dodged it and it hit Matthew on the leg!! I had great fun at Stone Farm, I wish I could go again. I’m sure if you went you would enjoy it as much as I did."
Lauren Cartwright also wrote about her Stone Farm experience: During the week we had many jobs such as feeding the ducks and grooming the pony. Although it was not one of the jobs, the rabbits and guinea pigs received lots of cuddles! Diesel the dog had his tennis ball thrown at least 100 times! The dorms all had names. I was in Dovecot. Every evening there was always a lot of talk about the best bits of each day. Dovecot overlooked the yard and had a great view of all the animals and of course, Diesel tearing around the yard.

Silvia & Max, the couple behind Salsa y Sol are celebrating the grand
finale of their ‘Summer Season of Fun With Salsa’ with a summer party with live Cuban jazz band "Los Cerebros" on Thu 29Jul!
"Max and I really wanted to organise some regular ‘Latin Party Nights With Live Cuban Bands’ for all our salsa friends and anyone enjoying Cuban music, since there is nothing like dancing to the hot rhythms of a live Cuban band! It is quite a costly exercise for us and we are operating on an at cost basis for those evenings! But the buzzing atmosphere on those evenings is worth every penny!
This is our 4th ‘Latin Party Night With Live Cuban Band’ and there will be sangria and complimentary nuts and crisps for all the tables to add to the authentic "Cuban ambience! It will be THE HIGHLIGHT of our ‘Summer Season of Fun With Salsa’ before our little summer break in August!"

Pleasure...The Wessex Conference Centre Launches Fish & Game Event
Although it hasn’t fully hit us yet, summer is definitely here
and across Hampshire businesses are coming up with all sorts of events for the warmer weather. The Wessex Conference Centre is no exception, as this popular venue provider based at Sparsholt College near Winchester, is gearing up for the Hampshire Food Festival that is taking place throughout July.
“This year, we are fully embracing the local produce theme of the Hampshire Food Festival with our Fish & Game Event on 18th July” said Anne McDonald, Catering, Conference and Events Manager at The Wessex Conference Centre. Making use of the trout and deer bred at Sparsholt College by the students, The Wessex Conference Centre’s Fish & Game Event will
provide visitors with an insight into the breeding and rearing of trout and deer, allowing them to follow the course each product takes before reaching the plate!
“Our Executive Chef will be
demonstrating simple trout and venison recipes for our guests to try both at the event and at home,” says Anne. “Fresh trout from Sparsholt’s lake and the college’s ‘home-grown’ venison will be on sale to the public on the day.” The Fish and Game Event will be held outside Westley Court at
Sparsholt College on Sunday 18th July and
admission is by ticket only.
“There will be a morning
session starting at 10.30am and an afternoon session starting at 12.30pm,” Anne said. “Tickets are limited, so guests will need
to book in advance to avoid
disappointment.”
Admission is £10 per adult and £7.50 per child and tickets can be obtained by phoning The Wessex Conference Centre on 01962 797259 or by emailing [email protected]. Tickets will also be available at The Wessex Conference Centre stand at the Sparsholt Countryside Day event this Saturday.

Seasonality, provenance and exceptional taste - these are the
three guiding principles of a new deli which opens in Stockbridge this summer. Thyme & Tides Deli and Bistro opened on 30th June now that the final hurdles are jumped and the paint is dry!
Owned and run by Iain and Sally Hemming, Thyme & Tides is a deli and café with a difference. There is a fish counter focusing on fresh, ethically sourced and sustainable fish, together with a deli counter chosen to reflect local produce and world foods sourced with equal passion and expertise.
Head Chef at the Bistro, Nick Thomson was always destined to be a great cook – he was actually born in his families kitchen. Nick started cooking as a child and for his 18th birthday went on a cookery course run by Valentina Harris in a small village in Tuscany to experience Italian cooking first hand. Nick also trained under a Michelin starred chef and has spent the last four years refining his skills with game and fish in the western highlands of Scotland. This training is evident when you see the menu Nick draws up each day – as seasons come and go so will the produce. “People think in seasons but I think in days,” explains Nick. “Produce can be excellent one day and the next just average. So each day I’ll be buying, gathering, sourcing and even
Oscar-winning film to preview at Winchester Festival
Local cinemagoers attending the 2010 Winchester Festival Film
Preview will be among the first in the country to see an Oscar-winning movie not on general release in the UK until August.
The film chosen for the 2010 preview at the city’s Everyman cinema on 12 July is The Secret in Their Eyes, which won this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
The film is directed by Juan Jose Campanella, and stars Ricardo Darin, Soledad Villamil and Guillermo Francella. All four of them, as well as Eduardo Sacheri who adapted the screenplay from his own novel, lived through that dark period in Argentinian history and testify to the authenticity of the story which is based on real-life events of that time.
The Secret in Their Eyes is at the Everyman for one screening only, at 8.30pm on Monday 12 July. Tickets from the Everyman box office on 01962 877007.

landing food at its absolute peak of perfection and using it with a light touch on our daily menus. My mantra is fresh flavour, fabulous food.”
The deli and fish counter will be used as ‘pantries’ for the cafe ensuring constant freshness and importantly much less food wastage.
Iain and Sally Hemming have run an incredibly successful deli in Wilton for the last three years and their success has been far greater than they ever believed possible – The West Street Deli was placed at number one by The Independent in their 50 Best Delis feature in August 2008. Iain delights in sourcing new and interesting products both locally and internationally. The main emphasis is always on local produce, but to ensure they are able to provide the very best of certain foods, they buy from across Europe – after all whilst local asparagus is delicious and readily available it’s not so easy to find a three year old English organic parmesan! Iain has developed great relationships with local producers and growers and can often be found tramping around a field tracking down a local farmer to get the best and freshest products whether mushrooms or raspberries. Iain also works with new and ailing delis across the country in all aspects of food retail, distribution, production and sales. He is known as 'The Deli Doctor' and 'Food Forrager'
and has recently worked with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall at River Cottage and with Sting’s Lakehouse Organics brand.
Sally’s training at The Tante Marie College, from where she graduated with distinction; enabling her to build up a successful private catering company – Little Olive – in London. She worked for clients such as Jack Wills Clothing and Ralph Lauren – Jamie Oliver even lent her his gloves once.
Commenting, Iain and Sally said; “We discovered that out individual skills create an amazing whole and we believe it is this synergy that has enabled us to have such an award-winning deli in Wilton. We aim to create a busy thriving bistro and deli in Stockbridge which will become a destination for local people and others visiting the surrounding area. Additionally if travellers are driving on holiday and passing through Stockbridge they will be able to stock up on delicious food for the weekend or join us in the bistro for Sunday lunch with the family.”

Historic Churches Trust and the Mayor of Test Valley, Cllr Chris Lynn, will lead the launch of the leaflet which has been prepared jointly by Test Valley Borough Council and local author Bryan Beggs.
Covering some of the most distinctive parish churches across Test Valley, the leaflet provides a brief guide to their architecture and history. It is hoped that it will assist
in raising awareness of the wide array of historic parish churches in the borough to both visitors and residents. Representatives from all parish groups are being invited to the launch.
Cllr Peter Giddings, Economic Development Portfolio Holder says “Test Valley is an area of stunning landscapes and picturesque villages which over the years has led to larger
numbers of people visiting the area. Tourism has therefore become more important to the local economy and key to this is highlighting some of our most beautiful and historic assets”.
