KEMRITE NAMED SECOND-TEAM & ALL-ACADEMIC Kemrite is the first player from Liberty to earn second team All-Conference honors since John Brown received the honor in the 2010-11 season. This is the highest finish for a Liberty player since Jesse Sanders made First Team All-Conference in the 2011-12 sea-son. The native of Conroe, Texas led Liberty in scoring this year av-eraging 13.6 points per game, shooting 50.2 percent from the floor. The junior made the most three-pointers on Liberty’s team this season, averaging 2.4 threes per game while shooting 43.6 percent from beyond the arc. Kemrite was also named to the All-Academic Team after graduating in three and a half years with a major in business with a 3.4 grade point average. Kemrite is cur-rently working toward earning his MBA.
DAWSON NAMED TWO-TIME HONORABLE MENTION For the second straight year, Dawson earned honorable mention All-Conference accolades after leading the Flames in rebounds, pulling down 4.3 boards per contest. The redshirt senior posted double-digit scoring games in 14 contests this season, including a season-high 20 points in a double overtime win on the road at Gardner-Webb. The native of Clovis, N.M. has started in all 52 games while at Liberty.
LIBERTY'S ALL-FRESHMAN DUO Baxter-Bell and Pacheco-Ortiz being named to the All-Freshman Team ties Liberty’s record for most players named to the All-Freshman Team. The Flames did so previously in 1998-99, 2003-04 and 2008-09. Liberty has not had a player make the All-Freshman Team since 2009-10 (Evan Gordon). The duo made an immediate impact in their first season as they combined for 53 starts (Baxter-Bell 24 starts, Pacheco-Ortiz 29 starts). Pacheco-Ortiz averaged the second most minutes on the team, playing 30.4 minutes a game. The native of Ponce, Puerto Rico ranked 14th in the Big South averaging 2.5 assists per game. During conference play, he elevated his play even more with 3.1 assists per game, which ranked 10th in the conference. In his rookie campaign, Pacheco-Ortiz has the Big South’s best assist-to-turnover ratio (3.4) during confer-ence play with 55 assists and just 16 turnovers. Liberty needed a threat in the post this season and Baxter-Bell delivered in his first year averaging 7.6 points while pulling down 3.5 boards a game. Of the nine games Baxter-Bell posted double-digit scoring efforts, six were during conference play as he averaged 8.4 points during Big South games. The native of Dayton, Ohio scored a career-high 19 points twice in Big South meetings against Presbyterian and against Charleston Southern.

FLAMES 2016-17 PLAYER BIOSliberty PLAYER NOTESKEMRITE CLIMBING LIBERTY'S ALL-TIME SCORING LIST He has been Liberty’s most consistent offensive threat this season and Ryan Kemrite continues to climb the ranks on Liberty’s all-time scoring list. The native of Texas started the season with 416 career points and in 29 games this season, Kemrite has scored 393 points, moving himself into 30th on Liberty’s list with 809 career points. This season Kemrite has recorded five 20-point games and notched a career-high 22 points against Longwood on Jan. 26, 2017. The junior surpassed Seth Curry’s 707 points on Jan. 28, 2017 at Campbell. Kemrite has led Liberty in scoring ten times this season and is averaging 13.6 points per game, which is tied for no. 11 in the Big South. During conference play, he is averaging 13.6 points per game and shooting 48.6 percent from the floor. Graduate assistant coach, Alex McLean is also on the all-time scoring list in 25th place with 954 career points.

TOP DEFENSE Ritchie McKay has brought the “Pack Line Defense” model from Virginia and has implemented it in Lynchburg as they rank among the defense’s in the country. Cur-rently, the Flames rank no. 26 in the country in scoring defense allowing 63.9 points per game. Along with McKay, the Flames habe learned the Pack Line from some great teachers in associate coach Brad Soucie and assistant coach Vic Sfera as they too came from Virginia. Before McKay and his staff arrived for the 2015-16 season, Liber-ty allowed 69.4 points per game.
The record in the Big South in scoring defense was set by Winthrop in the 2007-08 season when they allowed just 58.5 points per game. The Liberty record was set in the 1984-85 season as the Flames allowed 56.7 points and since being a member of Division I the record is 62.3 set by the 1996-97 squad.

ROAD WARRIORS Liberty made history on Jan. 26, 2017 at Longwood, winning 93-62 to improve to 7-0 for the first time in school history, surpassing the 2010-11 season winning its first four conference road games. In Liberty’s last road game, they continued making history defeating Gardner-Webb 92-87 in double overtime to make it seven straight wins on the road. The Flames have already surpassed last year’s season total of road wins and are two wins away from tying the record for most road wins in a season set by the 1995-96 squad with nine road wins.

CABBIL STEPPIN' UP Since receiving a DNP against Princeton, Lovell Cabbil has aver-aged 10.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists in the last 21 games. After being inserted into the starting lineup since the final non-con-ference game at Houston, Lovell Cabbil has averaged 11.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists.
It was no coincidence that Cabbil began to play well when he went back to his home state and played against Lamar and Houston. The Texas native scored double-digits in back-to-back games for the first time this season and it has propelled him to 19 straight starts.
Cabbil is making a serious case for Big South Defensive Player of the Year as he is spear-heading a defense that allows the fewest points per game and is given the task of taking on the biggest threat on the wing. On Jan. 28 at Campbell, Cabbil held the nation’s sixth leading scorer, Chris Clemons, to 12 points, his second lowest output this season and 11.4 points below his season average.

NON-CONFERENCE HOME TESTS In Liberty’s five losses at home (VCU, Furman, Princeton, UNC Asheville and Winthrop) each team has sat in first place or has been tied for first place in their conference this season. In its five losses at the Vines Center, Liberty has been held to 64 points or fewer with its season-low of 48 points against Winthrop. The Flames have been effective from the three-point line this season, averaging 9.3 three's per game and in its losses at home, the Flames have never made more than nine and averaged just 6.8 makes from beyond the arc.

FLAMES 2016-17 PLAYER BIOSSTEPH CURRY-KICK’N IT The NBA's Most Valuable Player, Steph Curry, will be making his way to Liberty University on March 1 to speak at Liberty's weekly Convocation. Chris “COSeezy” Strachan, who used to be as student manager for the Liberty men’s basket-ball team, works closely with Curry and started this challenge to do something similar to the Ice Bucket Challenge. Strachan wanted to make sure people he knew, like Curry, were reaching people all over. Strachan and Curry are asking friends to donate one pair of gently used sneakers and send them to Liberty. He is also asking people to make a video talking about what the shoes mean to them and to challenge three friends. They have started the hashtag #KICKNIT-FORACAUSE and are active on social media with the username @Kicknit to collect as much shoes to donate to the Republic of Congo and benefit the Africa Humanitarian Partnership.

The Sanders brothers finished were the third-highest scoring brother duo in Big South history, combining to score 2,619 career points.
ZACH FARQUHAR FAMILY Sophomore Zach Farquhar’s father, Steve Farquhar, was a four-year letterwinner in men’s basketball from 1986-90, which includes Liberty’s first season as a Division I team.
SUMMER TRIP TO COSTA RICA For the first time in five years the Flames embarked on an offseason journey out-side America’s borders. Coach McKay’s squad spent five days in Costa Rica, playing three exhibition games against international competition and taking part in commu-nity service.
FAMILY MATTERS - THE GARDNER'S Brock Gardner joins the Flames after being a three-star recruit from Chandler, Ariz. Gardner’s older sister, Macey, is currently in her first season as an assistant coach on the Liberty volleyball coach-ing staff. Macey Gardner was a three-time Pac-12 All-Conference selection while playing at Arizona State, finishing as the Sun Devils’ all-time leader in kills.
2017 SIGNEES Liberty Men’s Basketball Head Coach Ritchie McKay has announced the signing of five players to attend Liberty during the 2017-18 academic year – Jay Barber, Elijah Cuffee and Keegan McDowell.
Barber, a 6-4 sharp-shooting guard from Liberty Christian Academy has hit 156 three-pointers during his last two seasons. As a junior, he earned Conference 23 All-Conference first-team honors, leading the team with 14.0 points per game. During his sophomore year, Barber led the Commonwealth of Virginia and ranked among the nation’s leaders in threes. Cuffee, a 6-4 wing player, will play his senior year of high school at LCA, joining fellow Liberty signee Jay Barber. He played his first three years at Poca High School in Poca, W.Va., earning three all-state honors. While at Poca, he scored 1,306 points and helped the team to a state title as a sophomore. Cuffee, a three-time Cardinal Conference first-team honoree, led the league in scoring last year, averaging 19.8 points per game. McDowell, a 6-5 guard, comes to Liberty from Moeller High School in Cincinna-ti, Ohio. As a junior, McDowell earned All-GCL South second team honors, averaging 9.3 points per game while shotting 40 percent from three-point range. Last year, Moeller went 24-5, while McDowell was named to the Cincinnati Enquirer Division I second team. He is from an athletic family, as as four siblings either currently dom-pete or have competed at Division I schools. His older sister, Delaney, is a member of Liberty’s track & field team.
EVERY STEP OF THE WAY: THE MCKAY-SOUCIE CONNECTION The bond began officially in 1995 and they have never left each other’s side. Ritchie McKay has always had associate coach Brad Soucie by his side since their days at Portland State. They started in the Pacific Northwest and have moved together across the country. They have made pit stops at Colorado State, Oregon State and New Mexico. The duo first came to Liberty from 2007-2009 where they had a record of 39-28 before leaving for Virginia where they spent six years together under Tony Bennett. McKay and Soucie then came back to Liberty.
LIBERTY BASKETBALL BUILDS NEW WEIGHT ROOM Liberty University's new Basketball Performance Center was recently completed. This 3,000 square-foot space is connected to the back of the Vines Center overseeing the men’s and women’s practice courts as well as the pond. This state-of-the-art facility was designed with basketball players in mind. Director of Sports Performance, Henry Barrera stated, “We wanted to build a space that communicated the priority and integration of movement, strength, and power to our athletes.” Highlighted by six full Sorinex racks and Keiser training equipment that gives players and coaches real-time feedback on power production and work quality. This beautiful facility offers players a high-level training experience. “We’re very fortunate to have a facility of this level and are very appreciative of Mr. Jerry Falwell Jr. and his commitment to Liberty athletics,” Barrera said.

HEAD COACH RITCHIE MCKAYAfter spending six seasons working under Tony Bennett as associate head coach at Virginia, McKay returned to Liberty as the men’s
basketball head coach on April 1, 2015. McKay previously served as the program’s head coach during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons.Despite being predicted to finish 11th in the 2015-16 Big South Preseason Poll, McKay guided the Flames to a top five seed and a first
round bye in the 2016 Big South Championship, finishing 10-8 in conference play. Liberty’s 10 victories in conference play were the most since the 2010-11 season, and included a seven-game win streak. The Flames’ finish in the standings prompted McKay to receive Big South Coach of the Year honors.
Before returning to Liberty, McKay helped the Cavaliers post a 136-64 record, including back-to-back 30-win seasons in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
Virginia advanced to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament three out of McKay’s last four years with the program. Following an ACC Championship in 2014, the Cavaliers were the No. 1 seed in the East Region and advanced to the Sweet 16.
The Cavaliers spent seven weeks ranked as the No. 2 team in the country in 2014-15, finishing the year with a 30-4 overall record and a 16-2 mark in ACC play. Virginia advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Final Four team Michigan State.
Prior to his days in Charlottesville, McKay served two seasons as Liberty’s men’s basketball coach, posting a 39-28 overall record and a 19-13 mark in Big South play. He was named the seventh head coach in program history on March 26, 2007.
Following a 16-16 record during his first year at Liberty, McKay led the Flames to a 23-12 record in 2008-09. The win total matched the program’s NCAA Division I record for most wins in a season (Liberty finished the 1996-97 season with a 23-9 overall record).
Liberty finished the 2008-09 season third in the Big South standings, the Flames’ third double-digit win total in league play in the last 10 seasons (Liberty was 10-8 in 2009-10 and 13-5 in 2010-11).
The Flames were invited to play in the inaugural CollegInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT), advancing to the second round fol-lowing a win over Rider.
McKay led one of the top scoring offenses in the Big South and ranked No. 48 in the nation, averaging 75.5 points per game during the 2008-09 season.
Under McKay’s leadership, forward Anthony Smith (2006-09) finished his career ranked sixth in program history with 1,754 career points scored. Smith was named All-Big South first team in 2009, one of two first-team all-conference student-athletes coached by McKay (Alex McLean in 2008).
McKay brought Seth Curry to Liberty and the rookie made an immediate impact on the program. He finished the year averaging 20.2 points per game and was named 2009 Big South Freshman of the Year (second player in program history to receive the honor). Curry spotlighted McKay’s Top 50 recruiting class in 2008, which was ranked No. 48 in the country by Basketball Times.
McKay has compiled a 204-186 career coaching record in 13 seasons as a head coach. McKay has the winningest career coaching record in program history with a .582 winning percentage. Prior to his first stint as head coach at Liberty, McKay served as head coach at Portland State (1996-98), Colorado State (1998-00), Oregon State (2000-02) and New Mexico (2002-07).
Overall at New Mexico, McKay sported an 82-69 coaching record over five seasons. He finished the 2005 campaign with a 26-7 record, winning the Mountain West Conference championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
McKay posted a 37-23 record at Colorado State, which included a 1999 National Invitational Tournament (NIT) berth. The Rams de-feated Mississippi State and in-state rival Colorado at the event, before losing to eventual NIT Tournament champion California in the quarterfinals.
The 1999-2000 season featured the first year of play for CSU in the Mountain West, and the Rams logged an 18-12 record and a fourth-place conference finish.
A pair of victories over nationally ranked opponents, the first time the program had accomplished the feat at Colorado State in a de-cade, and capturing the title at the second annual Pearl Harbor Classic in Hawaii were some of the highlights during the season. College Hoops Insider magazine noticed the success of the 2000 Rams and tabbed McKay as its MWC Coach of the Year.
Before arriving on the Colorado State campus, McKay began his head coaching career when he was named the head coach at Portland State. McKay started at Portland State in 1995, helping revive a program which had been dormant for 15 years. McKay led the program to nine victories in the school’s first season of competition (1996-97) since the early 1980s.
After the initial season at Portland State, McKay was named one of six finalists for the Clair Bee Award, given annually to the coach with the most influence and innovation in the game of basketball. Two other finalists for the honor that year were Dean Smith of North Carolina and Mike Krzyzewski of Duke. The 1997-98 Portland State team followed with a 15-12 mark and a third-place finish in the Big Sky Conference.
McKay started his basketball coaching career in 1988 as a graduate assistant at the University of Washington. After his start with the Huskies, he spent time as an assistant at Queens College in North Carolina (1989-90), Seattle Pacific (1990-91), Bradley (1991-93) and back to Washington (1993-95). McKay also served as an assistant under Jim Molinari at the 1997 World University Games in Italy, where
the USA captured the gold medal.McKay earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in athletic administration from Seattle Pacific in 1987. A stellar player for the Falcons, McKay left the program as the school’s single-season and career
record holder for steals, and he was third in career assists. He still holds the school record with 10 steals in a 1987 game against Pacific Lutheran.McKay is married to the former Julie Summers. The couple has two sons, Luke and Gabriel and a daughter, Ellie, who is currently a senior at Liberty.
