    Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Learn skills in Adobe Illustrator. Learn to use pen tool.Learn to use shape tool effectively. Learn to use effectiveplacement.

Process:I started this project by making up a company. I chose“Kuta Electric” because Kuta is my last name and my dadused to work for a power company, and I always imaginedhim owning it. After that, I sketched out four different logos

that I think would t for. Then I went to Adobe Illustratorand created the logos. After reviewing the logos with otherpeople, I decided that the top one I created would be usedfor my nal project. I made appropriate changes, and nallycreated a greyscale logo, and a white one in a colored box.

Description:A two sided brochure for a place or event of my choosing.

    Date:03/26/16

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 02

    Ben Pingel

    Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator Adobe IndesignGoogle

Objectives:Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows thecutout shape of the image.Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, andsubheaders.Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:I decided that I wanted my brochure to be about the Salt Lake Comic Con event and I startedby creating a trifold diagram in InDesign. I knew I wanted all of it to resonate to my audience,

any one with an interest in pop-culture, movies, and comics, so I used a large image of theSalt Plaza being surrounded by superheroes as my background. I lowered its opacity to 46,and put a red backdrop behind it. I also created a new logo for the already existing event.Since Utah is known for its mountains and high population of Latter-day Saints, I created ablack, white, and blue logo of the Angel Moroni in front of some simple mountain shapes. Idid my research and gathered an idea of what sort of things occur during the comic con, andthen created the body text of my brochure. I made paragraph styles so that there is a spacebetween all of my paragraphs, rather than an indent. There is also text wrap around on of myimage of Jango Fett so that the text takes shape with his body. Each Header has text wrap aswell so that there is a good space between the images and headers, leaving a good amount ofwhite space.information. After playing with the color scheme, this was my outcome.

Process:I knew from the get go I wanted my event to involve a highschool or some sort of youth program. I took the time tosketch out four different layouts once I decided a movieevent would be a good fundraiser for a high school. Afterthat I went through my person magazines and art to nd apicture that would relate to that; and that’s when I nd someart projects I bought from a freelance artist depicting theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I then scanned the image andmade one of my sketches a reality using Microsoft Word. Iused an Epson Scanner, Microsoft Word, and Apple’s export

Description:Spiritual Montage of images and colors of my choice.

    Date:02/13/16

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 02

    Ben Pingel

    Program(s)/Tools:Adobe PhotoShopGoogle

Objectives:Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and ow. Unify a layout with a consistenttheme and dominant spiritual message. Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements.

Use a mask to apply a lter to one part of the image. Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scriptures…your choice). Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying textsize. Theme word(s). Select good quality images

Process:1. I cropped my background image, the one of the woman and child, to 8.5 x 11 inches.2. After that I took an image of a sunset on a seashore and used the lasso tool in Photoshop totransfer the shining rays into my background. Using a mask I was able to blend the sun into thebackground at 82% opacity with a black brush.3. Then I placed an image of God’s hands into my background. Using the same masking techniqueI was able to blend it in at 100% opacity, using the black brush again. The image had similarenough color that it didn’t need to fade at all into the background.4. I chose a simple font for my body text, and a more decorative, yet neat font for the threewords that mean the most in this picture. The most meaningful words are lled by overlay, sothat they capture the essence of the picture. The other words were colored using the color droptool, and pulling the blue color off the mother’s dress.5. I created a rectangle, coloring it with the color drop tool and using the gold color to the rightof the image, below the sun’s rays. I then placed the texts within that box, and aligned them to tneatly.6. For my nal step, I added Levels, Vibrance, and Selective Color adjustments, to make

everything feel warm and get my message across clearly.

Description:Web Page created for make believe business.

    Date:03/12/16

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 02Ben Pingel

    Program(s)/Tools:TextWrangler

Objectives:Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long sideis 300 – 500 pixels.

Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how itappeals to a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale forcolors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc,)Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags – Doctype(provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol orul (with li tags), img, br, and a link to blog). Open the HTML page in a webbrowser and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch margins for printing.

Process:To construct my CSS and HTML, I used an application called Text Wrangler.

I am by no means an expert in this process, so a lot of it was just trialand error. I was able to post my image (logo) into my HTML, and used theEsplin Color Wheel as a reference for color in my CSS. Once I had all thetext out and positioning of my content, I combined the two documents, CSSand HTML, into one folder so that they activate for each other. I also usedpadding around the logo and text so that they would not be too close tothe edge of the web page. This was one of the most challenging parts ofworking with CSSphoto size and adjusted its colors, making it more vibrantand appealing to the eye of my audience. After my image looked the way Iwanted to, I created a banner and a title along with information. After playingwith the color scheme, this was my outcome.

Description:Business cards created for my makeblieve business using InDesign and Illustratior

    Date:02/27/16

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 02Ben Pingel

    Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.Create a new logo to t a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing

logos or use previous designs. Don’t use photos or live trace.Use the new logo todesign consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Photos are okay onbusiness card and letterhead as additional design elements. Letterhead should be8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2and printed above center on a vertical page.

Process:I started by creating my rst logo for an imaginary company called “Kuta Electric.”This logo was made by combining three diamonds together, and adding a text boxwith the name Kuta in the middle. I used this as a backdrop for my business card. Then I put all of my information on the card, and added the logo a second time, but that looked off.

I used the square shape tool to create business card, measured 3.5in x 2 in.

So I decided that wouldn’t be my logo, but I would still use it as a backdrop. Mylogo then became an illustrated electric socket that I created with round endedsquares. I also included this logo on the header of my project.

The diamond shape backdrop has an opacity of 42%. I personally think it looksawesome, and the people who critiqued me didn’t have a lot to say about it
