IntroductionAs a parent, teacher, bookseller, distributor or publisher we are all educators. Sterling Publishing continually strives to “make education fun”. We try to package our educational series in formats that are appealing and create content that is accessible and engaging. We run seminars for teachers on how to use our books in the classroom, and would be happy to discuss with you the opportunity for running this program in your area. In addition we provide support to bookshops, libraries and school suppliers to market and promote these key series to parents, teachers and children.

The aim of this catalog is to showcase our key educational series, the titles available, how they work, and the ancillary material available to use at home, in the classroom, or for in-store events. If you see something of interest please contact me, and I will be happy to discuss how we can work together. These series provide an alternative approach to key subjects that aims to “make education fun”. I look forward to hearing from you.

STERLING EDUCATION IN ACTIONOur goal is to not only produce great Educational Books and Content, but also to help work with Educators around the world to tailor our products to specific markets. Our first steps were made in 2008 with Teacher Training Seminars.

Teacher Training SeminarJakarta, Indonesia - January 2008In conjunction with Java Books we helped to organize a Teacher Training Seminar in Jakarta. Along with Sterling there were presentations from Scholastic, Random House and Macmillan. Sterling’s participation in this Seminar was a huge step in raising the profile of our Educational Series. Since the Seminar the sales of our core series have increased significantly in Indonesia. We have also opened direct contact with schools that allows us to get feedback on how we should develop our series and improve our content.

The FutureWe continue to look for opportunities to work with Educators and Booksellers around the world to provide support in using our books. If you would like to discuss the possibility of collaborating in a project we would love to hear from you!

Sterling Teacher Training SeminarHo Chi Minh City, Vietnam - September 2008As part of our committment to raising the profile of Sterling’s Educational series we organized our first Exclusive Teacher Training Seminar with Fahasa in Vietnam. Opposite are pictures from the Seminar. Over 100 teachers attended the 2 hour seminar and question and answer session. In response to the seminar a wide range of books are now used in the Education System in Ho Chi Minh City and beyond.

C lassic stories are the bedrock of any good reading program, and making them accessible and appealing is an on-going issue for all teachers and

parents. This series is the culmination of research into formats and narrative style and with sales of over 3 million copies, and school adoptions across the world, we have created a successful and appealing series for ages 7+. These are the ideal bridge from our Early Readers series, I’m Going to Read and Easy Reader Classics, to the Unabridged Classics. Each book also contains a series of 10 discussion questions that can be used in the classroom, these can also been downloaded and printed from our website to use in the classroom. In ad-dition there is an afterword for parents and teachers.

The Hardback (HB) format gives the books a high perceived value, and makes them exceptionally durable. At $5.95 we have also managed to keep the price affordable. This is our number one selling children’s series across the world and I urge you to try these today. We will be adding Book & CD packages to this series in 2010:

Learning to read is a huge step for all children and making it easy and fun is the goal of all teachers and parents. Children love stories. This simple truth underlies all the books in this series, which are carefully designed to maximize children’s ability to decode words. Harriet Ziefert and Sterling have created an innovative method for reinforcing vocabulary at Levels 1 and 2, known as The Word Bank. This easy to use ‘bank’ highlights new words as they are introduced.

This unique tool is designedto give the new reader:

Clearly defined goals for success of • word recognitionA comprehensive method for ‘bank-• ing’ learned wordsReinforcement through repetition•

Level 1: Kindergarten–Grade 1… Ages 4–6• Word bank to highlight new words• Consistent placement of text to promote readability• Easy words and phrases• Simple sentences build to make simple stories• Art and design help new readers decode text

Levek 2: Grade 1… Ages 6–7• Word bank to highlight new words• Rhyming text introduced• More difficult words, but vocabulary is still limited• Longer sentences and longer stories• Designed for easy readability

Level 3: Grade 2 … Ages 7–8• Richer vocabulary of up to 200 different words• Varied sentence structure• High-interest stories with longer plots• Designed to promote independent reading

Level 4: Grades 3 and up … Ages 8 and up• Richer vocabulary of more than 300 different words• Short chapters, multiple stories, or poems• More complex plots for the newly independent reader• Emphasis on reading for meaning

Easy Reader ClassicsThis is a great companion series to I’m Going to Read. This series allows children

to practice their reading with well-known excerpts from classic stories. The text

is leveled to be appropriate for early readers, and the

color illustrations make these editions fun and

light. We have chosen 4 highpoints from

each classic and created a separate book

for each. The classics we have adapted

so far are: The Jungle Book, Adven-

tures of Tom Sawyer, Story of Doc-

tor Doolittle, Treasure Island and

Wind in the Willows. We will be

adding more stories to these col-

lections in 2010.

A Read-and-Play Program for Babies and ToddlersBabies have amazing brains that soak up knowledge, doubling in size during the fi rst 12 months. Every time they receive stimulation—through sight and sound, smell and touch, love and cuddles—they become smarter and more aware of the world around them. That gives parents a unique opportunity to “build a brain” for a lifetime of learning.

According to the National Commission on Reading, reading aloud to children is “the single most important intervention” that parents can make in ensuring their child’s later reading success. Carefully leveled by age and ability in six-month increments, the Begin Smart™ program will expand the emerging motor and cognitive skills of children from birth to two years.

Babies are smart, books make them smarter

Doyle & FosseyThe huge success of the Horrible Histories shows the popularity of taking a narrative approach to key subjects. The Doyle & Fossey series seeks to do the same with Science by creating two young science detectives. They analyze evidence, de-velop hypothesis and test out their theories on the way to solving science mysteries. This new series helps to demystify science jargon, and makes it relevant to everyday life.

• Unique combination of science facts and entertaining storytelling• Following in the footsteps of the bestselling Horrible Histories• Activities and experiments – including setting up a lab and making a dry ice blaster• Young Science detectives• Analyzing evidence, developing hypothesis, testing out their theory• Cartoon-style drawings add to the fun
