Hello and welcome to Stephenson. My name is Duncan Macfarlane
and it is my honour to be your JCR President for the coming year.
Being in Stephenson, or Stevo as we call it, you will gain
opportunities well above and beyond your academic studies. Youll
meet new people, take up a range of new sports, get involved with
the craziest societies as well as gaining invaluable support which
will aid your personal development.
As JCR President, I am your sabbatical officer who will help organise events in college,
promote student welfare, ensure sports and societies are available to all students, provide
chances to take part in charities and volunteering, as well as representing you to the
university. Basically, my job is to make sure you have an AMAZING time when here.
Alongside myself, your elected Executive and Non-Executive Committee will strive to ensure
you are loving your time at Stevo, and if there is anything we can do to support you, we are
all approachable and ready to help you out! The door is always open no matter how big or
small your query may seem!
My top tip for you is to get involved! There will be so many opportunities during your time
here so please grab them with both hands and enjoy it. Looking forward to meeting you in

Stephenson College Freshers' 2014
Stephenson JCR (Official)
JCR stands for Junior Common Room, and it is the students organisation just for
Stephenson College. The JCR is almost like a mini students union which ensures your
experience of college life is what you want it to be. As well as enjoying all of the
benefits of being part of the JCR, you can also get involved so that you can hold
positions like Freshers Reps or committee members. The JCR is run by the students
of the college for the benefit of other students, and its focuses can be divided into four
areas:
Events
Social events include weekly nights out, city trips to Leeds,
Newcastle and York, Stevo Day, Summer and Winter Balls,
day trips and of course, Freshers Week. We also plan chilled
out nights such as Central Fridays where there might be a
band or acoustic night. The JCR organises these events for
you!
Team Welfare
Life at Stephenson is undoubtedly great, but sometimes
problems may arise during your time here. Team Welfare is
here to help you in the event of any problems by pointing you
in the direction where help can be found as well as raising
awareness through various campaigns during the year.
Sports and Societies
The JCR coordinates all sports and societies for students of
Stephenson. This ensures we get pitch bookings for sport as well
as team stash, and organise rooms for societies. We have more
than 30 different sports and societies for you to join through the
JCR.
Representation
The JCR represents you to the college and university for issues affecting students.
Twice-termly JCR meetings are held for all members which gives you the chance to
discuss JCR issues and ensure your officers are held to account.
You can get involved in the JCR by joining
a committee as soon as you arrive. Each
committee needs members to ensure that
all aspects of college life are accounted for
and that there is something happening for
everybody.
Each committee is chaired by either an
Executive or Non-Executive officer. To
join one of the committees in red, you
need to be elected to a post but all other
committees are open to any JCR member.
If you want to help organise the Summer
or Winter Ball you could join the Ball
Committee, or if you wanted to help
advertise JCR events you could join the
Communications Committee. Look out
for committee sign-ups at the Freshers
Fair!

for the college and I am the Vice-President of Durham Marrow. My role as the E&D
Officer is to help organise the collegiate programme and to host both professional guest
talks and events at the college in order to improve student involvement in college life.
Ensuring that both home and international students get fully involved in college life is an
essential aspect of my role, and if there is anything that you want to happen at college
then feel free to speak to me. This will be the best year of your life, enjoy every moment of
it! One love.
Assistant Welfare Officer - Ellie Farquhar
Hello Freshers! I'm Ellie, and I'll be your Assistant Welfare Officer this
year. I'm a 2nd Year Primary Education student, from Cambridgeshire.
As Assistant Welfare Officer, I'll be supporting Sophie and the rest of
the Welfare Team (the best team) to offer the best possible experience
to all members of Stevo. Getting involved is a big part of uni life, and
helping others is probably the most rewarding way to do that. If you
have any problems, questions, ideas, or just want a chat, get in touch!
Don't worry, be happy! Stevo Love xoxo
Charities Officer - Anthony Ashurst
Hey everyone, Im Anthony; a third year Psychology (Applied) student in my third year and Im your Charities Officer this year; my third and final year. Im from the heart of Britain; the North East, more specifically the ever cultured
County Durham. My main love in life is watching movies and I am also Presi-
dent of FilmSoc - I really am juggling it around in my third year. As a Charities
Officer in my third year I will be pushing to get you all involved in a number of
different fundraising and volunteering opportunities while having a load of fun
along the way because thats what its all about. Lets all be mini philanthropists.
Environment Officer - Grace Tse
Hi guys! A big welcome to the Stevo family! I'm Grace, I'm from

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any idea
or questions. I hope you enjoy your time at the Uni!!!
International Officer - Tobi Onalaja
Hey guys, Im Oloruntobiloba Onalaja (just stick with TobiTobs would be nice too) and Im a 2nd Year Accounting & Finance student originally from Nigeria. Im a member of the squash team and also your International Officer this year which means Im the lucky guy that gets to make sure both international and home students feel at home by integrating all your
cultures into college life. Got loads of things planned in terms of weekly
international nights and Im open to any new ideas you guys may have, just get in touch and make sure youre involved. See you in Freshers Week.
Head Freshers Rep - Rachael McCabe
Hello beautiful people! I'm Rach and I have the absolute pleasure to be your Head
Freshers' Rep this year! Last year I just had my picture as a 'Frep' in the handbook
this year, I get a paragraph as well! I am a 3rd Year Accounting and Finance student and have loved every minute of my time at Durham University. Originally
a Glasgow 'bird', raised as a Southerner and now living as a Northerner, I like to
think myself well-rounded. I am here, along with every other member of the Rep
team, to make your Freshers' week and year an unforgettable experience. I am so
excited to meet each and every one of you and to get this year started!
Livers-Out Officer - Rebecca Tumelty
Hiiii Freshers! I'm Rebecca and I'm going to be your Livers-Out Officer this year.
I'm now a 2nd Year Psychology Applied student living at home. My role within the
JCR is to make sure people living at home feel as involved in college life as
everyone else and are able to really enjoy life at uni. I'm more than happy to hear
your ideas to help make living out as integrated into college as possible, as I know
how hard it can be to access activities when you don't live on the doorstep like
most. Stevo, however, is an amazing college and although I have never lived in,
I've still always felt welcome and found Central to be like a second home, so I hope
you will too! I'm looking forward to meeting you all very soon!!
Students' Union Rep - William Ferrari-Harris
Hey Freshers, I'm William Aguayo Ferrari-Harris - I am aware that my name is extremely
long and thats without my two middle names! I am a 1st Year Finance student, yet I am not a fresher.. I am the Students Union Rep for Sevo for this year, which sort of makes me your MP and the voice of the college in the Students Union. I am mix of
British, Italian, South American and Swiss, and I have lived all over, however I mainly
grew up in London and Santiago (in Chile, South America). I am involved in lots of things
at both a college and Uni level - being the Strategy Director of Entrepreneurs Durham
and the QC Rep of the Consulting Society ETC, my suggestion is to get involved in things
or you will regret it, and branch out to meet people from different groups.
MCR Rep - Kristin Farrants
Hi, my name is Kristin, Im entering my 3rd Year of my PhD in Health Studies. I will be your MCR Rep for the
year. Ill be working with the JCR President to make sure we have loads of great activities for postgraduates
and mature students and Im really looking forward to meeting you.
Sponsorship Officer - Tim Blackburn
Hello Freshers, I'm Tim Blackburn and I'm the Sponsorship Officer for
the college JCR. My role is to get companies to sponsor the sports teams, societies and events at the college. I'm in my 2nd Year of
studying Business and Management. My home is Bicester/Buckingham where I am a waiter/barman at a hotel. My
personal interests include a lot of sports and I play for Team Durham at Hockey. Hope to see around college and have a great time at Uni!
Whether sport is your entire life, or if youre one of those people that forgets their P.E. kit
every week , everyone is encouraged to get involved here at Stephenson College, and we
hope youll find an interest even if you havent before!
We have a wide selection of sports available including: Rugby, Rowing, Cricket, Football,
Netball, Hockey, Basketball and Lacrosse amongst others. The full list of teams and their
captains are on the page opposite. There is also the opportunity to start your own team if
there isnt one already in place; for example, last year Wheelchair Basketball was set up by a
Stevo student.
The collegiate system gives everyone the opportunity to compete in a sport of their choice
at their ability level. Each of our teams play in a league against the other colleges, where we
do really well, but there is also the opportunity to simply train or try out new sports for the
first time. If you are good enough, you can also play for Team Durham and represent the
university against other universities nationally. As well as all Stevo Rangers simply enjoying
the sports available, there is also the opportunity to develop your skills, as the majority of
teams receive coaching.
Furthermore, the social side that coincides with being part of a college sports team will be a
huge part of your life at university, as each team often organises social events on a regular
basis, such as day trips and nights out in Stockton, Durham, Middlesbrough and Yarm.
As well as the usual club training sessions, inter-collegiate matches and socials, there is a lot
more to get excited about at Stevo. Queens Campus holds an annual Varsity, where all our
teams compete against John Snow college (the other college on Queens Campus) in order
to win the Inter-College Cup. After the most intense game of Netball you could possibly
imagine, we of course won the trophy in 2014, and want you to help us to keep it in 2015!
We encourage everyone to try something new, so an inter-block competition, made up of
alternative sports such as Dodge and Volleyball, will run throughout the academic year.
Queens Campus is also home to a new multi-million pound Sports Centre with state of the
art facilities, which you can find out more about at www.teamdurham.com/queenscampus. This
includes a gym, sports hall, spinning room and much more. For our rowers we have a
purpose built boathouse. As well as everything down here, you can get the free bus to
Maiden Castle and the Racecourse in Durham City which holds additional sports facilities
and pitches.
This is your chance to try something completely new or improve on what you are already
good at, whilst getting/staying fit and making lots of new friends. If you would like to find out
more, or if you have any questions about sports at Stephenson College, please contact our
Sports and Societies Officer Becca Donaldson at [email protected]

Over the last year weve seen a number of societies grow and we
anticipate the development of many more new societies in the future.
Queens Campus societies are available for anyone at the University to
join. There is sometimes a minimal membership fee to cover venue and
equipment costs. Queens Campus societies are developed and
controlled entirely by students.
Stephenson College JCR encourages all types of activities to become
established as societies. Some societies cover both Colleges at Queens
but others are exclusively for Stephenson students only.
If you have an interest and want to turn it into something more, then
why not look into making it into a society. For example, last year
students at Stephenson College established Running Soc, The Great
Stevo Bake Off Soc and many more! So if you have a passion for
something and a society for it does not already exist, let us know and
we can see if we can start one.
Societies are simple to form the President will help. All you need is a
minimum of 6 people interested, an understanding of what costs will be
incurred, and a constitution. Societies can apply for funding from the
JCR. For more information please contact your Sports and Societies
Officer, Becca Donaldson at [email protected]
Photography Society
Hazel Furniss
Stevo is the only college at Durham to have its
very own dark room. Members of the society
have the chance to be official photographers at
various events throughout the year, as well as
getting involved with their own projects.
Film Society
Anthony Ashurst
Every week we meet to watch a film in Central
(on the brand new projector!). Members get in
for free and for non-members its usually a
couple of pounds. We have popcorn and drinks
and its just a great chilled out society to join!
Cheerleading Society
Hannah Marsden
The cheerleading society have various practices
throughout the term and get the chance to
cheerlead at Durham Wildcats games in the
Queens Campus Sports Centre. Lots of fun and
a bit of a laugh!
Acapella Society
Sam Scotney
If you want to get involved with some musical
performances then join Acapella Society. We
meet regularly to rehearse and perform at
various college and university events throughout
the year.
Other societies on campus include;
Infinity Musical Theatre
Jazz Band
Arabesque Ballet Company
and many more...
To contact any of the Society Presidents, visit www.stevojcr.co.uk and visit the
Societies section of the website.
The Great Stevo Bake Off
Lili Farina
We meet to try new recipes, share baking tips,
bake cakes for events (such a charity
fund-raisers in the college), and generally just to
socialise over a shared passion! Stevos most
delicious society!
Running Society
Ruth Smith
RunSoc meets every week outside Central, and
goes for runs which cater to every level of
stamina - from a 10K down to running to catch a
bus! We also have guest coaches who visit and
offer advice and training.
Paintball Society
Craig Young
A brand new society for 2014 does what it
says on the tin really!
University will probably be the best experience of your life so far; it is the most exciting, the most immersive and one of the best
opportunities all in one. Life at University is fantastic, but we can all
get burnt out and worn down when things get a bit too hectic and
stressful. Thats why were here! We provide a network of support to
everyone in College, were part of the JCR and the first point of
contact if you need someone to speak to outside of family and friends.
Who are Team Welfare?
Dont worry were not a strange bunch
of people, were regular students, just like
you! Sophie Towers the Welfare Officer,
shes like the Captain of Team Welfare,
with Assistant Welfare Officer Ellie
Farquhar as the Vice Captain. Then
theres the rest of the team who are all
really friendly and highly approachable. Its our goal to run
Team Welfare and help make Stephenson College your home from
home and to enhance your University experience!
What do we do?
We run a weekly KitKat ChitChat
where you can come and chat to
us about anything thats going on
in your world. Weve all been
trained in listening and
confidentiality skills, so what you
say remains private.
We arent here to give you professional advice, but we can help you
find it if you need it. We help you find the right people to talk to, as
well as providing personal wellbeing supplies.
Its not all serious stuff though, come and chat
about whats the best activities to get involved
with, top takeaway places, great places to go
shopping and whats fun to do around here!
We also organise various awareness campaigns
throughout the year such as Work Smart,
Think Twice Week and One World Week.
How can I spot a member of Team
Welfare?
In Freshers week, its easy - were all wearing bright yellow Team
Welfare tops so that we stand out! So look out for us on every night
of Freshers Week, running the various Awareness Weeks and
attending organised JCR events throughout the year!
Were all unbelievably excited for
next year and cant wait to meet
you all, so please come and say
hello when you arrive! If you have
any questions or queries please
send them to the Welfare Officer
Sophie Towers at
Love,
Team Welfare x
Central Fridays
Every week we host entertainment in Stevo Central, ranging from
live music and comedy, to karaoke and the Exec Pantomime. Its free
and its literally on your doorstep - whats not to love?
Queens Campus Club
Nights
Every week the JCR books out a local nightclub in either
Stockton or Middlesbrough just for students at Queens
Campus. You can go out and spend the night with loads of your
friends, and usually rocking full fancy dress. Make sure to get your wristbands
early each week for discounted entry too!
Quiz Nights
Every week the Exec organise a pub quiz in Stevo Central. Expect
topical rounds, general knowledge and incredibly specific questions
that only the quizmaster could conceivably know the answer to.
Prizes vary each week, and include tickets for nights out, vouchers,
vintage Stevo tshirts, and money behind the bar. Get swotting!
Stevo on Tour
Several times a term, Stevo Rangers jump on a coach and go on a
trip together! We go on several city trips, which include drinks
at bars and then entry to a nightclub, to places such as Leeds,
Newcastle and York, although the list is getting longer all the
time. We also arrange days out together, such as Stevo on Tour: Saltburn,
where we all went to the beach for ice cream and fish and chips.
International Nights
Stevo Rangers come from all around the world, and so we ask students to host
International Nights in Central to celebrate their culture. Expect food, drinks, music and
maybe even a bit of dancing.
ReFreshers Week
Exams are over, the year is winding down to an end, and then Stevo has a
second run at Freshers Week! Expect day trips, big nights out, a formal
handover dinner, and then finally...
Locomotion Dinners
Some colleges have formals with gowns - at Stevo we have
Locomotion Dinners, often in fancy dress! These twice-termly
dinners are a staple event in the college diary. You get a two-
course meal followed by after dinner entertainment, and
past themes have included Cowboys and Indians, Jersey Shore and
Burns Night. Students living in college accommodation get two Locomotion Dinners included
within their rent, but all spaces require online sign-up and are open to all students. Be quick
to avoid disappointment!
Winter and Summer Balls
At the end of our first term we have a Winter Ball with a meal
on campus followed by an afterparty in a secret location. At
the end of the year, we hold our epic Summer Ball - last year
we took over an entire castle, with more students than at
any other Durham Ball, and finished the night with a Stevo
red fireworks display. You can help shape the events by getting
involved in the Ball Committee.
Stevo Day
The best day of the year by a mile. Inflatables,
food stalls and a stage with live music and hustings for anybody
wanting to be a Rep for the next year. This happens after exams,
and is a great way to celebrate the end of the academic year, and
being part of the best college IN THE WORLD.
Board Game/Game Show Nights
Stevo has a bit of a monopoly on fun - it was a bit of an operation, but we
recently purchased a tonne of board games, and every week there is a
scrabble and a bit of tension as Stevo Rangers rush down to Central to
take a relaxing break from the game of life. But dont get your knickers
in a twist(er) - we also have game show nights. Erm cluedo.
Charity is something Stevo are passionate about. We work closely with DUCK,
the Durham University Charities Kommittee, who offer a whole range of ways
to get involved with chariddeeee. Skydives, expeditions around the world,
sporting events, themed nights and rag raids are just a selection of some of the
different things students are able to participate in, all in the name of raising
money for good causes. You can find out more about DUCK at
www.durhamduck.org.uk
Stevo also holds numerous fundraising events
itself throughout the year, with the proceeds
going towards a variety or worthwhile causes,
such as the local Butterwick Hospice. As well as
charity auctions, DUCK week, sponsored sports
events, and working with Durham Marrow, we
are probably best known for our Children in
Need night. Last year, through hair dying and
shaving, a bit of male waxing, and some baths in
beans, we raised over 1000 on the night,
which resulted in the President getting a tattoo
of the college motto on his arm!
If you have any questions or want to find out more about the charitable work
that we do, then please send them to the Charities Officer Anthony Ashurst at
At Stevo, were very proud of how our students get involved in the wider community by
volunteering in various projects. Student Community Action (SCA) is one of the best
ways of getting into volunteering and there are so many different projects that there is
bound to be one which is suited to you. SCA is the university-wide volunteering society
with many projects based near Queens Campus and Durham City, so its up to you what
you get involved in.
SCA holds a project fair in mid-October so be sure to go and see all they have to offer,
but some examples of their volunteering projects include:
gardening
one-to-one tutoring
dog-walking
tea parties with the elderly
As well as all of the opportunities available to students
university-wide through SCA, Stephenson College has
developed its own project.
The Stephenson Primary Readers project is a
volunteering scheme where students from Stephenson
go to local primary schools several times a term to
read with children. These pupils may need more
support with their reading to catch up with their
peers, or this may be just to encourage enjoyment of reading. Sign-up for this project can
be found at the Stephenson JCR Freshers Fair in Freshers Week.
Yes, you will come to Stevo and have an absolutely awesome time, but at the end of the
day, its really important that you work hard, get a great degree and can find a job after
university. At Stevo, we have a collegiate programme which gives you the chance to get
involved in activities which help improve your job prospects and give you great life skills
which will be useful in the future. We also hold events where you get the chance to
network and meet people from various career paths.
Day in the Life of
Several times each term, a guest is invited to Stephenson
to deliver a question and answer session about their
career to our students. These give you a chance to ask
questions to people who hold interesting jobs and careers
which you may aspire to. We invite various guests from
careers relevant to our courses at Stephenson, such as
head teachers, GPs, headhunters, but we also try to invite
some guest with more unusual career paths, such as a Red
Squirrel Conservation Officer, the manager of Newcastle
Falcons Junior Academy and the director of the Chartered
Institute of Marketing.
Laming Lecture Series
The College runs a series of lectures and seminars of an interdisciplinary nature,
designed to be of interest no matter what your course, and to generate greater
understanding of your fellow students issues and challenges on their courses. Look out
for information about these on the collegiate programme.
Course Chats
Stephenson JCR also holds Course Chats throughout the year, where students from
2nd Year and above are available to answer any questions you may have about
assignments, exams, or just the future of your course in general. These can be of great
use to all students, and is gives you an opportunity to hear from those with direct
experience of what you are studying.
If you would like to find out more, or if you have any questions about how the JCR and
the college can help you to develop, please contact our Engagement and Development
Officer Curtis Evans at [email protected]
JCR Committees
Joining a JCR committee is a fantastic opportunity which adds plenty to your CV. You
could sit on the Events Committee where you help to plan and organise events
throughout the year, you could be on the Steering Committee which helps shape the
direction of the college, or you could be on the Finance Committee which helps
oversee the JCR finances and ensure money is spent in the correct places.
Careers Events
The Careers, Employability and Enterprise Service at the university is always putting on
workshops and seminars to help you improve your employability prospects. This may be
through CV writing, interview skills, or could relate to how you can contact new people.
Various careers events take place in Stephenson and across campus throughout the
year.
The Durham Award
The Durham Award, developed in
partnership with students and employers,
formally recognises extra-curricular activities and gives you
the opportunity to think about the skills you have gained and how to market these to
an employer - helping you stand out from the crowd.
As a mature or postgraduate student, you have the best of both worlds at Stephenson.
Not only do you have the opportunity to take part in all that the JCR have to offer, you
are also a member of the Middle Common Room (MCR) too! The MCR allows mature
and postgraduate students to be part or a smaller community of students of a similar
age and of similar interests. The MCR host a range of events such as Scholars' Suppers,
where we host a guest speaker (e.g. a postgraduate student discussing their research)
before enjoying dinner, days out for everyone to
enjoy, book clubs and much, much more. The MCR
also have a physical space in College, 'The Heighing-
ton', where you can relax in between lectures or
catch up on some study time with a cup of tea!
Whether it's with the JCR or MCR - make the
most of your time at College and get involved! For
more information about the MCR, contact the MCR Rep Kristin Farrants at
The college staff are the people who make sure the college is running on a day-to
-day basis. They are based in the College office which is located between two of
the accommodation blocks. The staff are there to offer you support if and when
you need them.
Professor John Ashworth, our College Principal, has overall
responsibility for college matters. He is a Professor of
Economics and unfortunately a Newcastle United fan. John
is supported by Dr. Jill Tidmarsh who is Vice-Principal. Jill
oversees student welfare, admissions, discipline and
academic-related matters. Jill comes from an academic
background of Applied Social Science.
Jane Dove is our Assistant Senior Tutor. She is amazing at helping out with any
welfare or financial issues you might have. Mandy Wright is our
Accommodation Adviser who can help to you out with any accommodation
issues when you live in College. Youll find her on the first floor of the College
office. In the College office you will also meet Kate Thompson who is the
Projects Administrator who undertakes various projects such as alumni activities
and Claire Basnett who is the Student Support and Admissions Assistant who
supports the day to day running of the College. You will also get to know Alex
Prudham, our College Receptionist and Clerical Assistant, who you will usually
see when you enter the College office to collect your post or if you have any
queries.
Your College Mentor is your first port of call for settling into College life.
Our 24/7 porters, Alan, Tony, Keith and John are always happy to help out with
any maintenance issues. These guys are great and really helpful so make sure to
offer them a cup of tea if you see them about!
The frontline of College support is provided by the Mentor Scheme and each new student
has a College Mentor. You will meet your Mentor in the early weeks of Michaelmas Term.
Your Mentor will contact you periodically throughout each term to meet with you, and
you are expected to attend - theyll probably buy you lunch though, which is nice! You can
contact your Mentor for advice and they will provide direction to the best source of
support. Your Mentor will encourage you to take advantage of all of the opportunities that
the University offers allowing you to make the most of your time at Durham.
College offers welfare support and advice through the work of both the Vice-Principal and
Assistant-Senior Tutor: Dr Jill Tidmarsh and Ms. Jane Dove. They are happy to meet
students to discuss problems of any kind - financial, health-related, academic or personal.
Appointments can be made by calling into the College Office, or by email at
[email protected], or by telephone, 0191 33 40560.
The Durham University Disability Support service provides appropriate care and support
for all Durham students with a disability. The term disability is used to include physical
disability, specific learning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia), medical and mental health conditions, all
of which can significantly affect studying. The service at Queens Campus occupies a room
in the Student Services area of the Holliday Building and staff can be contacted by email at
Students can also take personal concerns to the
University Counselling Service, which provides free,
confidential counselling for any student. At Queens
Campus, the Counselling Service is based in the Student
Services area in the Holliday Building. To book an
appointment or find out more you can call into the
Reception at Student Services, phone 0191 33 40039
or email
The college has links with Alma Medical Centre where
you can register with a GP as soon as you arrive in
Freshers Week. The centre comes to campus three
lunchtimes a week and its great to know if you have
any health issues you can get medical attention very
simply and easily.
At Stevo we take saving the environment pretty seriously; we recently
won most improved college with regards to carbon emissions. Plus polar bears are cute.
There are loads of ways that you can get involved:
Recycling: Every kitchen has a variety of recycling bins, which youll also find all around campus, which helps to reduce the amount of rubbish that goes into landfills. The
college also has recycling facilities for items such as batteries, printer cartridges and
aerosols.
Energy: Turn your lights and electronic gizmos off when youre not using them! Blocks will be rewarded which use the least energy.
Green Travel: Everything on campus is within walking distance; however you can hire a bike if youre feeling lazy!
If youre passionate about the
environment, then get
involved!
Some upcoming events:
Environment Week
Environmental Treasure Hunt
Interblock Energy Saving
Competition
and much more
To find out more about the Environment at Stevo, contact our very own
Environment Officer Grace Tse at [email protected]
Living and studying in Stockton-on-Tees is a great way of exploring new places as there are
loads of things to do in the local area.
Stockton Town Centre
Stockton is currently in the middle of a huge
redevelopment of the High Street which is
really exciting for the college. There are loads
of new little independent businesses opening on the High Street
with lovely restaurants, cafs and bars as well as loads of high street chains at the
Wellington Square Shopping Centre. The JCR works closely with Stockton Council so that
students get deals on special promotions and we even have specialist markets and events
put on just for us!
Teesside Park
This is a fifteen minute walk or three minute taxi ride from
campus and has all the shops you could ever need. Its a huge
retail park with loads of superstores and restaurants as well
as a cinema, bowling alley and casino.
Bus
The X1 is a free bus service which runs every half hour during the day (every hour in the
evenings) which takes students between Durham City and Queens Campus. This is a great
way to explore the city of Durham which hosts a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the
Cathedral and Castle, as well as lots of great little shops and restaurants too.
Train
Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Leeds and York are all easily accessed by the train.
Middlesbrough is the closest which only takes about 10 minutes (or you could get a bus)
and hosts a great deal of shops, cinemas, restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
Saltburn is a little gem of the North-East which is also
accessibly by train (approx. half an hour journey). Its a
seaside town which is famous for its surfers (which is
impressive considering the freezing weather) and knitted
characters along the pier from an unknown mystery
knitter...
All of the rooms in College are single occupancy, en-suite and have WiFi. There are
almost 280 rooms available and they are arranged in blocks named after our honorary
graduates - Barker, Bellamy, Cooper, Cowey, Griffiths, James and Laming. Each block has
flats of 6 or 7 rooms each with a well-equipped, shared kitchen. Rent includes all
utility bills, contents insurance, access to the IT network, 2 themed Locomotion
Dinners and 48 evening meals in College over the year (two per week during term-
time, on Mondays and Wednesdays).
Our twice-weekly evening dining is a great opportunity to eat with friends without
having to buy and prepare the food for yourselves. Students living in private sector
accommodation often choose to join in these dining evenings for a very reasonable
price.
Accommodation in College is managed by the Accommodation Adviser, Mandy Wright,
who can be contacted by email at [email protected]
or by phone 01913340032. On weekdays, the College Porter carries out repairs and
maintenance and takes delivery of parcels. The Night Porters perform out of hours
security patrols and maintenance. The Porters can be contacted on 01913340087.
There is also the option to live in Mezzino, this is college managed, private sector
residence located a short walk from Campus and is close to the centre of Stockton. All
rooms in Mezzino are also en-suite and are arranged into flats with a shared kitchen. It
is a purpose built student residence and offers a great view over the River Tees, so you
will be able to spot our rowers!
The JCR fully encourages a high level of
participation throughout the College
whether you live in or out. So for any
Stephenson Fresher living out of
College, we still want you to take part in
all of our events too - your contact is
our Livers-Out Officer Rebecca Tumelty
who you can email any questions to at
Stevo Central is your multi-functional space! This is probably where youll spend the most time in Stevo,
as most students pop down all the time to hang out and to use all of the facilities. Central has four main
areas; the library, the societies room, Platforms 1 & 2, and Bar Central.
The Library
If the Queens Campus library is too far to walk to (across the car park!), or if you want to do some
group work, this is the perfect place to go! You can print, study and read in the relaxed atmosphere.
The Societies Room
This room is available to book upon request and is the perfect space for societies, committees, and
sports teams to meet. It is also another great space to do quiet study in, so just ask at College
reception if you ever want to book the room out. There is a piano located in here for all you musical-
types too, so many sing-a-longs has been known to happen! It is also home to Film-Soc, Stevos film
society, where they hold regular film nights watched on the large screen projector.
Platforms 1 & 2
These are the largest areas of Central, and are where most of the facilities are. Platform 1 features our
new projector, which is hooked up to Sky but can also be plugged into laptops, as well as sofas, bar
seating, and a pub quiz machine. Platform 2 has a pool table, a ping-pong table, games consoles, even
comfier sofas, and a Bluetooth enabled sound system. Youll see both on the launch night of Freshers
Week!
Bar Central
The bar is open during the day selling snacks, coffees and soft drinks, and then at night transforms into
a great place to get drinks, including our official college drink (and the non-alcoholic version!) Plus
there are always offers and promotions on, including great deals on pizzas and drinks when a big game
is on!
The President and the TrOps also have offices in Central, so any enquiries you may have, you can just
pop in and speak to them or any other member of the Exec.
The Durham Students Union is a democratic union which all registered students are
members of. The Students Union endeavours to ensure that all students, Colleges and
other student based organisations are fully and fairly represented. It also supports
student societies through funding and publicity.
The Students Union interacts with the JCRs, coordinating activities to ensure students
are provided all the representation and facilities possible. There are five sabbatical
officersthe President, Communities Officer, Activities Officer, Academic Affairs Officer
and the Development Officer.
We are lucky at Stephenson as the current Durham Students Union
President Daniel Slavin was previously the Stephenson JCR President.
Although he remains impartial regarding all colleges, we all know that
Dan will ensure Stephenson students are getting the best experience
possible.
The Students Union offers a wide range of services open to all
students. There are various ways to get involved with the Students Union. You can attend
Assembly and/or attend one of the many committees depending on your interests and
passions. Dunelm House is the Durham Students Union building (designed by the
architect that designed the Sydney Opera House) and is located in Durham near the X1
bus stop and is the location of the Activity Centre Advice Centre, Counselling Service,
DUCK office, and even a Ballroom.
Durham Students Union offers support on both a personal and social level to all
students through organisations:
International Students Association - Offers support and organises events (such as
the ISA Ball) for international students
The Students With Disabilities
Association - the SWDA is an
association that welcomes people who
wish to recognise and have support with
a disability.
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and
Transgender Association - The
LGBTA is an organisation run by LGBT
students for LGBT students.
Like most leading universities in the world, Durham operates on a multi-campus system, with a rich history
dating back to 1852. Our campus was founded in 1992,
and was later granted the title of Queens Campus by
Queen Elizabeth II on her Golden Jubilee.
The wealth of what our community, societies and sports
have to offer makes it easy for Freshers to overlook the
City Campus, and only venture to Durham on weekends for
nights out. The structure of Stephenson encompasses us
with a tight knit community and a special atmosphere unlike
at other colleges. We are surrounded by the universitys best
facilities at our doorsteps - academically, sportingly & socially, tailored
exclusively to support our needs.
Nevertheless, its important that you enrich your university experience with a
complete exposure to all of Durham University, and this means getting involved
with the City Campus. The University emblem is crested on our shirts because
Durham is our city too, and you should embrace everything it has to offer. After
Matriculation, go to the Durham Students Union Freshers' Fairs and sign up to
societies that interest you in both campuses. Your student life will be more
enriched as you will make friends from different colleges and it will expand your
horizons; it's a great
experience attending
formals at other colleges
(and vice versa, inviting
them to ours).

Some of you international students
are lucky enough to be joining us four
days prior to UK students! Reps will be
on hand to assist you in moving in all of
your possessions at both College and in Mezzino.
We know that many of you will have been travelling for a long time, so
we kick off Freshers Week at 7.30pm with a chilled out Acoustic
Night in Stevo Central, our very own building in the centre of college.
Look out for some of the talent Stevo has to offer and feel free to
bring along your own guitar or to come and have a sing. Any livers-out
students are also welcome to join this event!
Thursday 25th September
Today is the second international students arrival day, and again the
Reps will be out and about to help you move and settle in. Throughout
the week, international students will have various opportunities to
have their passport and visa checks. This evening, Stevo Central
becomes a Karaoke Bar. Starting
at 7.30pm you can come down
and sing any song of your choice.
Again this event is also for
students living out of college
accommodation so feel free to
come along!
Saturday 27th September
At 2.00pm all of you are invited by the College Team to an English High Tea
which is an official welcome to all Stephenson International, Postgraduate and
Liver-Out students. This will be
held in the Waterside Restaurant.
In the evening there will be a
chilled out night in Stephenson
Central, so come and mingle with
the Rep team where there will be
live music and a chance to relax
one last time before UK Student
arrival on Sunday.
Friday 26th September
Today international students will have several
talks to attend. You will be welcomed by college
staff and members of your JCR at 10.00am in
some of the teaching buildings on campus - the Rep
team will show you exactly where to go! Today you
will get the chance to attend information sessions about banks, healthcare and
many other things which will help you out.
In the evening, we will take coaches at 7.00pm from college to Durham City
where you will meet other students at the International and Postgraduate
Students Welcome Evening. This will be held in Dunelm House, home of
the Durham Students Union, and gives you the chance to meet other
international and postgraduate students from all of the other fifteen colleges at
Durham University. Coaches will be leaving at 11.00pm to bring us back after a
great night.
Home Student Arrival
Stevo is finally full as it welcomes the rest of the
new Freshers to be part of the Stevo family. If you
are moving into college or Mezzino you will be
asked to arrive between 10.00am and
12.30pm. You will find all of the Reps to be
really helpful as they assist you in moving in all
of your possessions! The Reps will be on hand in
college and at Mezzino to help you move your things in! Make sure to
head over to Stevo Central to get your pre-booked tickets or where you
will be able to buy tickets for events if you have not had chance so far
(unless they have sold outso make sure to book in advance!)
You will be able to collect your campus cards from Stevo Central after
arrival. You will also have welcome talks from College staff for students
living in College or at Mezzino. This will include a talk about the JCR from
your JCR President.
Stevo Launch- Dress Code Chilled
Now that everyone has arrived at Stevo, it seems only fitting that we kick
off being a Stevo Ranger in style. From 8.00pm, Stevo Centrals doors, and
bar, will open to welcome you all. All of the Reps and Exec will be there to
welcome you into Stevo and explain
what is in store for the rest of the
week. This night intends to provide
the opportunity for you to meet
and interact with all of your new
friends in what will be your new
favourite place!
College and Department Induction
During the day you will get the chance to meet the college staff where you will be given
loads of important information. In the afternoon you will then meet your department staff
who will introduce you to your course and provide various information.
Welcome Dinner - Dress Code Smart
After your inductions, you will have to rush back
and get changed for the College Welcome Dinner
which is in the Waterside, our very own dining hall
on campus. The dress code is smart, so thats suits
and college ties for boys and smart dresses for
girls. There are two welcome dinners as there are
so many of us. The first dinner will have a drinks
reception, including soft drinks, at 5.45pm. The
second dinner drinks reception will begin at 7.45pm. During the first
meal, there will be live music provided by some of Stephensons most talented students in
Stevo Central so come down for a few drinks before your meal. The same will happen
during the second meal so you will have chance to attend both, dont worry. At the meal
you will be formally welcomed into the Stevo community by our Principal and Vice-
Principal.
Yarm - Dress Code Smart/Casual
After the welcome dinner there will be coaches
waiting to take us on our first night out of the week.
It has become a Stevo tradition to have an epic night
in Yarm, a quiet town about ten minutes away which
comes alive at night. We will take you to some of
the historic pubs and bars of Yarm, before finishing
off at the Cross Keys night club. With its illuminated
dance-floor, it is one of the most exclusive clubs in the area,
and its all ours for the night. After youve danced the night away there will be transport
provided back to college.
Societies Carousel
If you dont fancy heading out to Yarm, Stephenson will host a variety of its societies in
Central so that you can get a taster of what theyre like. You dont have to have tried and
may not have even heard of some of the societies but its always a great evening so come
on down and get involved!
Department Induction
Serious talks again during the day today. Your department will be advising you on
module choices and what to expect during the year. This will provide you with loads
of information which will be really helpful during the year.
Queens Campus Freshers Fair
Department induction will finish early today so that you
can make your way over to the Queens Campus Sports
Centre at midday where you have the chance to see all
of the societies, sports teams and committees that you
can join across the campus. This is a great chance to
meet all of the people who you may be taking part in
various activities with and the best way to get involved.
Film Night & Cheese and Wine Tasting
There will be a film on in Central from 8:00pm. Come along if you feel like a
break from all of the inductions and just fancy a chilled out night snuggled up with
some popcorn etc. The Cheese and Wine Tasting will be in the Heighington Room
and is a classy way to spend a chilled out Tuesday evening.
Stockton Pub Golf - Dress Code Golf Attire
You do not have to be sporty for this! This is your chance to see the local town of
Stockton and experience our student night at KU for the first time. Starting in
Central at 8.00pm come along with a friend to partner up for the course and
receive all the info on where you are going. From 9.00pm everyone will leave and go
to their respective pubs as it turns into a bar crawl
around some of the best bars and pubs in Stockton,
with challenges along the way, before meeting in one
final bar at 11.00pm. Later, we all head to Ku which is
the newest and best nightclub in Stockton to have a
great night. Being in Stockton its only fifteen minutes
walk back to campus but taxis can easily be arranged
for on the way back.
Matriculation
Prepare yourself for an extremely early start to
the day as you are formally welcomed to the
University at the ceremony of Matriculation.
You will be woken by your Reps in the early
hours to ensure that you are up and ready for
our 8.00am start where we line up for a whole
college photograph. Boys have to wear suits
with college ties, and girls must also look smart and be
wearing the college pin - failure to do so will mean that you wont be allowed into
the Cathedral. Once the photograph has been taken we get on coaches at 9.15am to
take us to Durham for the first time this week. You will be taken to the Cathedral
where the Vice-Chancellor welcomes you to the university.
Durham Students Union Freshers Fair
After the ceremony, all students are encouraged to attend the university-wide Freshers
Fair at the Students Union. Here you will be able to join all of the University sports
teams and societies. Youll see some whacky and wonderful societies such as the
assassins and the cheese and wine society as well as a chance to sign up for musical
theatre, art, charity, volunteering and loads of other things.
College organise coaches back to Stevo, or you will be able to get the free X1 bus back
to Queens at anytime during the day, with your campus card.
The Arc- Dress Code Chilled
After the long day of Matriculation and the early start, Freshers Week takes a bit of a
chilled out turn with one of the best hidden gems of the year, the night at the Arc. The
Arc is a local theatre which provides exclusive access to
Queens Campus students for one night and one night
only. This is your first chance to meet students from the
other college at Queens, which gives us an opportunity
to get some chants going and some really epic
competitions and games. Expect to see live performances
from some of the best talent from both colleges, as well
as Take Me Out, the Freshers Rep games and many
more events to make this a great night. Not to be
missed.
Department Induction
After a break yesterday with Matriculation, its back to
Departmental induction where you will find out about
the course structure and assessment, as well as learning
about the library, careers service and other departmental
related activities.
Stephenson JCR Freshers Fair
You will have already been to the QC and DSU Freshers
Fair but now its time for the best one yet. The JCR
Freshers Fair is held in Central in the afternoon and gives you the chance to join any JCR
sports teams, societies or committees you may have missed out already. It also gives you
the opportunity to chat to the JCR Exec in a relaxed atmosphere about what events you
would like to see throughout the year.
Durham- Dress Code Emergency
Services
This will be our first trip to Durham of
the week, so to make sure we stand out
we will be sporting Emergency Services
Theme fancy dress. We will meet at
Central at 8.00pm and once we arrive
in Durham the Reps will lead you to
various social hotspots around the city.
We will all meet again at Loft where
another Durham college will join us. This
night will be a great chance for you to mix with your new friends, see a new city and
meet students from the Durham City site.
Central Games Nights
In Central we will be hosting a chilled evening with some informal competitions at Table-
Tennis, Pool, Darts, X-Box and some sick prizes! The perfect alternative if you fancy a quiet
one and just want to chill with your mates!
Department Induction
Today is your final day of Induction Week and youll be having the last pieces of
valuable information which will support you throughout the rest of the year.
Sports Social - Dress Code Sports Attire
You do not have to be sporty for this! This is
your chance to meet your sports captains for
the year and has become one of the best nights
of Stevo Freshers Weeks in the past. Starting in
Central at 8.00pm come along and choose
which sports team you are going to be joining
for the evening. From 9.00pm coaches will be
leaving for our closest City Middlesbrough
which has some amazing nights. Each team will do their own bar
crawl around some of the best bars and pubs in Middlesbrough before meeting in
one final bar at 11.00pm. Later, we all head to Walkabout which is a great club in
Middlesbrough to have a great night. Being in Middlesbrough, it is slightly further away
than Stockton but still only a 5 minute taxi!
Central Night
Game Show Night!
From 8:00pm, Megan and Faye will host a game
show themed evening with you guys - whether
it is Deal or No Deal or Family Fortunes, its
always guaranteed to be a great laugh. They
host Game Show night weekly, so if you like it,
get involved as it becomes more fun with more people! There will also be access to
all the board games and other activities in the JCR so if you are just in your room,
come on down and say hi!
So youve made it to the weekend
College Colours - Dress Code Red
This is the big night we have been waiting
for. Don your red paint and red clothes as
we get out our chants and our Stevo
flags. Tonight we go out with John Snow
in the final club night of Freshers Week.
Well be out in force representing Stevo
in our bright red t-shirts (make sure you buy
these on your Freshers form) and then will arrive at our secret venue where
we meet the other college. This is a great night where you get chance to meet
some more students from the campus who arent in our college. Loads of Stevo
-Snow challenges will be occurring, but its all a bit of a laugh - we do like them
really!
Film Society
Meet in Central for 7.30pm where the Film
Society will be waiting to greet you with
popcorn, sweets and drinks. These guys meet
weekly in the Meeting Room which they turn
into a cinema with the giant projector. Be
sure to sign up for the film society if you
want to have a say over what films they play
this year.
Freshers Week Finale- Dress Code Chilled, but
preferably Red
Can you believe it? Freshers Week is drawing to an end. It
isnt quite over yet though, as we plan to celebrate the end
of Freshers Week in style.
Stevo will be transformed into a giant inflatable area with
stuff like sumo suits, bouncy castles, giant inflatable
gladiators, popcorn, candy floss, milkshakes and face
painting. There will be live music at the same time and this
is a day to come down and celebrate the end of your
Freshers Week.
At 7.00pm the hustings for best Rep begin. Each Rep has to get on the stage and
convince you why they should be voted the best Rep. Be prepared as they all show
their 20-second talent which might include the worm, smashing fruit on their head or
unreal dance moves.
Following this, the crowning of Mr and Mrs Stevo will take place, after numerous
rounds that will have taken place throughout the course of the week. We will also
hold our first JCR meeting of the year, which will give you a taste of things to come.
But have no fear this is still not the end, as we
transform Central into Club Stevo for the last
hurrah.
As you all head to bed before your first lectures
in the morning, dont be saddened as this is still
only the beginning. Its the start of first term and
weve got a schedule jam packed full of events to keep you
going throughout the year. Be ready for the best time of your life!
Get excited guysIts going to be AWESOME!!!
