Stephen’s Strands

August Alleluias

September begins the change of seasons and signals to us that life all around us is changing. In the midst of change, we need to trust God! God is our rock and our refuge in times of change.

On September 8th, we will begin a new message series titled Raise a Hallelujah that will explore how our trust in God brings a freedom to the way we live that allows us to “raise a hallelujah” in the middle of life’s storms. By remembering to raise a hallelujah and lift a prayer, we invoke the presence of God with us even in the most difficult circumstances. There is an inner peace in knowing and trusting that God is with us and that gives us courage to “raise a hallelujah” when the circumstances do not inspire a hallelujah.

We will explore how we learn to trust God in the small things in life in order that our trust can grow in confidence to trust God in the overwhelming moments of life. Trust grows through relationship. Developing trust in God is based on God’s promises like 1 Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.” Ultimately, through following the steps of Jesus, we want to trust God with “everything inside of us.” As we move in that direction, we can Raise a Hallelujah more easily in times of challenge and times of celebration.

We will examine the voice of unbelief and how we can Raise a Hallelujah that is louder than the voice of our doubts and fears. Part of being human is to have questions and doubts but we can pray to

overcome our doubts. Learning to trust God is developing the voice of faith that becomes able to raise the volume above the noise of unbelief.

As September comes to a close, we will celebrate that “hope will arise” within our hearts and lives as we grow in our trust of God. We will Raise a Hallelujah that God is with us in the face of every challenge and obstacle in our lives. God is our hope for the future and our strength for today. Because God loves us, we can trust in God and Raise a Hallelujah!

We look forward to worshiping with you each Sunday in September at the 8:30, 9:45 (beginning September 8th), and 11:00 a.m. services.

God’s best be yours,

Stephen Cotten, Pastor

Do You Need a Miracle?

The Miracles of Jesus: Finding God in Desperate Moments by Jessica LaGrone is a six-session study exploring many of the miracles of Jesus brought about by human

desperation. Our desperate need for Jesus opens us up to the dramatic power of God in the form of miracles.

“Believers in Grace” Women’s Bible Study will meet for this study at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 10 in the Crossroads area outside the sanctuary.Author Jessica LaGrone will lead us in exploring these miracles of Jesus, helping us to see that our weakness is an invitation for God to work powerfully in our lives and reminding us that we need God on our best days just as much as we do on our worst! Study guides will be available for $15 at the first meeting. For more information, please call Jill Lowry at 972-742-6581 or Betsy Gekiere at 972-955-2026.

Retreat and Re-new: People are precious, and when they hurt or suffer, they de-

serve the best care and support we can offer. That’s why our

community has Stephen Ministers. Their training, commit-

ment, and service make them the best at providing care for people who need it.

Stephen Ministers also have a support system, which includes you. In addition to our twice a

month support meetings, we have an annual retreat, where we re-commit ourselves to prayer and

care of our hurting community. On September 17th, we will have our day of retreat and re-com-

mitment. We thank you for your prayers and support as we ready ourselves for continued commu-

nity support.

Summer is over and we began our new school year August 19th. At this time all of our classes with the exception of our PreK class are FULL and we have a wait list!!Our PreK and threes classes are now using The Creative Curriculum for Preschool a comprehensive curriculum that features exploration and discovery as a way of learning. Through seven studies, which are hands on, project based investigations, we are able to build children’s confidence, creativity, critical thinking skills and help to set the foundations for lifelong learning. Fall is already off to a great start!

Wednesday Night Meal Teams, 2019-20

We are ready to jump into the Deep End with Ignite Kids! Regular sessions of our Wednesday Night Live children’s program start on September 4th at 6:00 pm. We are planning lots of fun with biblical learning, challenging games, mission work and a production in the spring. We will have a bus running each Wednesday night so let us know if your students need a ride. Encourage your students to bring a friend and join the fun. We are also looking forward to the start of our Stand Service on September 8th. The children’s department will be attending the 9:45 service and we will have our Bible Training Time (aka Sunday School) at 11:00. Parents are, of course, welcome to attend the Stand with their children, then bring them across to the Ignite Kids Area at 11:00 or, let your kids attend the contemporary service at 9:45 with Ms. Pam and have them brought across after. Please be in prayer about what works best for your family.Looking forward to seeing the sweet faces I have missed all summer and the new ones God is preparing to send to be loved and taught about His love for them! With great expectations of God’s coming blessings,Ms. Pam

We want to welcome David Thames to the choir. David is the son of Wayne & Nancy Thames. We are glad to add David’s bass voice to the choir. If you would like to add your voice, please let me know. We would love to have you as we “Make a Joyful Noise unto God.” Marilyn, Music Director

Thank you Jesus with your help, we finally made it. The children’s library is now complete. I personally want to thank Rev. Cotten, for keep-ing peace during all the challenges that we encoun-tered, Randall Byrd for keeping everything up to code and all the many hours he put in for making the library what it is today. I would also like to thank

Harry Earl, his family, and of course Stan Silva for the beautiful shelves built to fit all the children’s books we have accumulated through dona-tions over the years. I especially want to thank The Board of Trustees for allowing the library to grow and share the additional wall space in the adjoining room. Thank you Debbie Wooden for all your help when things got pretty dusty and to Johnny Newsome for your contribution of all of these lovely children’s books. Last but not least, Thanks to my children for their books and financial contributions. My gratitude also goes to Jackie for the lovely cornice boards, your window treatment is the frosting on the cake. As you can tell it took a village to complete this proj-ect. Once again, Thank you all for your help over these past months!Sincerely, Lena Mae Reeder Church Librarian

This past weekend we had our end of summer – back to school bash and we had a blast. It was only a 24 hour party, so we crammed in a lot of lake time, pool time, eating (lots of eating), & fellowship with one another. One of the highlights was 4 of our confirmation girls attended. Garrett Greenberg shared our devotion on Sunday morning and it was done in excellence! Our youth are full with the love of Christ and I can only hope that when they are at school or any public place, they can share His love so others may see and know Him. They all have crazy busy schedules with work, athletics, cheer, hobbies and of course homework. We are blessed that they find the time for FUMC! My prayer is for leadership in the church so they will be leaders in the future. Please continue to pray for our youth program. Prayer is vital concerning the real battles they face every day!
