Objective of the AMR online System

• The automatic meter reading online system for the City of Ekurhuleni must contribute its objectives to meet the needs of its valued customers and to support a cooperative and effective relationship.

• To achieve a leading position with regard to the key competencies (including online meter monitoring and billing customers).

Historical background

• The City of Ekurhuleni General Manager: Mark Wilson, committed to pilot an AMR online meter monitoring system, this as far back 1998,

• This was a first advanced metering system for large power users which was piloted using meteringonline.

Testing of meters

• Each and every new meter installed is first calibrated by a SANAS accredited laboratory before being put to use.

• Certificates of calibration are made available to the customer on request.

• Each metering point is comprehensively audited and certified in accordance with stringent technical requirements to ensure compliance with the South African Code of Practice for Metering, NRS 057 to ensure the integrity of the metering system and to minimise technical losses in the system.

Electricity Statistics

• The City of Ekurhuleni has an electricity demand of more than 2 400MW with an annual purchase of electricity exceeding 10.8TWh.

• Revenue income generated from the sales of electricity is about R7.5 billion 2010/11 and will exceed R9 billion 2011/12.

Project description

• All out-dated electromechanical and electronic meters were replaced with modern multifunction high-precision electronic meters.

• The first rollout of just over 350 metering points in Boksburg in 1998 was targeted at key customers who were encouraged to move to a Time-of-Use (TOU) tariff with financial incentives.

• Half-hourly profile data of active and reactive energy.

• Energy billing registers.

• Instantaneous voltages and currents.• Meter events and alarms such as fuse failure or tampering.
