Cultural Foundation

Opened in 1981 under the directives of the late Sheikh

Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Cultural Foundation was

the United Arab Emirates’ first multi-purpose community

centre, a public institution with a mandate to foster and

nurture cultural consciousness for all citizens of the

recently unified UAE. Placed next to the historic Qasr

Al Hosn, this building fundamentally represented a new

outlook on the role of culture in the modern UAE, with the

introduction of the first national library, a theatre and a

multi-purpose exhibition hall. Between 2009 and 2018, the

Cultural Foundation underwent extensive conservation

measures including repairs, rehabilitation and some

adaptive reuse. Its much-anticipated reopening took place

in December 2018.

Abu Dhabi Children’s Library

The Abu Dhabi Children’s Library is the newest addition to the

Cultural Foundation. It serves as a community place which connects

people, information and ideas. The 5,250 square metre facility is

designed as a lifesize pop-up book with immersive spaces, where

the print and digital content of a library and the diverse landscapes

of the UAE are brought to life. The innovative hands-on learning

programmes aim to foster a lifelong love of reading and to connect

children with the arts, technology and each other in ways to enrich

their lives and help them to realise their dreams.

For the opening exhibit, the focus is on the role that pop-up and moveable books play

in literacy. A pop-up book is a type of moveable book with paper mechanisms which

pop up or move when the reader turns the page or manipulates them. Pop-up books

are important interactive and visual communication tools, which link the reader to the

text or concept. The first pop-up books were designed in the Middle Ages. They were

primarily used to teach anatomy and astronomy. Today, they are engineering marvels

designed to engage readers of all ages.

The Art of the Pop-up

The creation of a pop-up book requires the work of

many people. First, there is the author who writes

the story, then there is an illustrator, and, most

importantly of all, there is a paper engineer who

decides which elements or mechanisms are best

to bring the story to life. The finished design is then

sent to a factory where individual elements are

die or laser cut. The mechanisms are put in place,

folded and glued into the book. Some pop-up books

may only use one element or mechanism while

others may be more complex works of art, with five

or more elements.

How does the use of moveable

books foster literacy?

Pop-up and other moveable books are designed

so that the reader is asked to perform a task. An

additional visual or sound element is then added

to the reading experience. Images change and

move, books make noises or ‘talk’. They encourage

children to take learning into their own hands, as

opposed to being prompted or directed by an adult.

Creative and critical thinking skills are fostered as

the child tries to figure out how the book works,

or takes control of the story by choosing to lift the

flaps or focus on certain images.

Since the beginning of time, people have told each

other stories. Stories make us laugh, they make us

cry, but most of all, they help us to understand each

other and the world around us. Abu Dhabi Children’s

Library is designed as a lifesize pop-up book with

immersive spaces where the print and digital

content of a library and the diverse landscapes

of the UAE are brought to life. It is a unique space

that encourages literacy, imagination and creativity

through play and hands-on learning experiences.

This aim is reflected in the opening exhibit

which enables visitors to immerse themselves

in an imaginative world where popular books

are brought to life. We extend our warm greetings

to all visitors and hope you enjoy this wonderful

exhibition. We would like to thank the authors

and publishers who allowed us to use their work in

this exhibition.

يشجع فريدا مكانا المكتبة وتشكل المتحدة. العربية

األطفال على تعلم القراءة والكتابة والتخيل واإلبداع من

خالل اللعب والتجارب العملية.

تتجلى أهداف المكتبة في العرض االفتتاحي الذي يتيح

للزائرين السفر إلى عالم من الخيال، حيث أشهر القصص

الثقافي، للمجمع إضافة أحدث لألطفال أبوظبي مكتبة تعد

آرائهم وتوسيع لتبادل الناس وتشكل مركزا مجتمعيا يلتقي فيه

لألطفال أبوظبي مكتبة تمتد بمعارفهم. واالرتقاء مداركهم

إلى عدة 5250 مترا مربعا، وتنقسم على ثالثة طوابق بمساحة

ثالثية المجسمة الكتب من تصميمها استوحي غامرة مساحات

األبعاد. ويتميز كل طابق في المكتبة بمفهوم خاص استلهم من

المتحدة. العربية اإلمارات دولة في المتنوعة الطبيعية المناظر

أما البرامج التعليمية المبتكرة، فتراعي تشجيع األطفال على حب

القراءة لتصبح جزءا من حياتهم، إضافة إلى تواصلهم الدائم مع

الفنون والتكنولوجيا ومع بعضهم البعض أيضا بما يثري حياتهم

ويساعدهم على تحقيق أحالمهم.

المجمع الثقافي

بتوجيهات من المغفور له بإذن اللـه الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان،

أول ليكون 1981 عام الثقافي في المجمع افتتح ثراه، اللـه طيب

مركز مجتمعي في دولة اإلمارات العربية المتحدة تناط به مسؤولية

مواطني جميع لدى واالجتماعي الثقافي الوعي وتنمية تعزيز

قصر مقابل الثقافي المجمع مبنى يقع حديثا. الناشئة الدولة

الحصن التاريخي، ويمثل رؤية جديدة لدور الثقافة في الدولة، مع

األغراض. متعددة عرض وقاعة ومسرح وطنية مكتبة أول إطالق

لعملية 2018 إلى 2009 من الفترة في الثقافي المجمع خضع

عليه التعديالت بعض أجريت كما شاملة. تأهيل وإعادة صيانة

الستضافة مجموعة من البرامج واألنشطة الثقافية المتنوعة. أعيد

افتتاح المبنى مجددا في ديسمبر 2018.
